The unique free-backing design, patented by Titan, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

I own an auto repair shop and I buy parts all day. This product fit like it was meant to. I received them in a very timely manor. I will use etrailer for future parts again and have added them to my favorites bar. Thanks.

by:

The brake assemblies were not individually boxed like the last time I bought these, but thrown in a box all together where they were free to bang and scrape against each other during shipment. This resulted it the anti-corrosion coating being scraped off in many places.

by:

Here's a video I did of the brake installation on my trailer. I got the actuator from a buddy who had bought it years ago and never took it out of the box! The only comment I would have, and you can see from the video, is that the single axle brake line kit didn't do it. I had to buy a connector and another line. No big deal on my end, but it might be for others. Also, my trailer already had drums, just no brakes. I was able to get the drums turned okay.

by:

I have used this product previously and found it to be of excellent quality it fit my application perfectly and works flawlessly .the service at e- trailer is also excellent

Great

by:

These Titan Hydraulic 10 inch brake assemblies were direct replacements for my 30 year old Titan trailer brakes. As assemblies they simplified the order and installation process saving me time. Quality part, fast delivery and great service.

by:

Awesome product, working very well on my trailer. Of course system is flushed with fresh water after each use.$

by:

I bought both side brake assemblies, a brake line kit, and an aluminum wheel/radial trailer tire combo. They came with free shipping and in great shape, in part because they were packaged so well. I still need some mounting bolts and nuts to install the brake assemblies, and the brake line kit is not long enough for my old 3500# axle trailer. In the morning I will run to NAPA, get the bolts, nuts, and brake line I need and install the brakes. I have a new hydraulic actuator/coupler a friend gave me, and that's already mounted. I hope to have pics tomorrow.

The aluminum wheel/tire combo is the 1st of 3 I need (single axle trailer plus a spare). I'm going from steel wheels with 14" tires to aluminum wheels with 15" radial trailer tires. This is a great upgrade for us, and the aluminum wheel that came today just looks fantastic. It will make the whole rig look better, as I have matching colors on the trailer and my classic tunnel hull speed boat, namely red and white.

I started buying stuff from etrailer last year when I was restoring an old travel trailer and have had great service all around. Prices are good and the people are friendly and knowledgeable. What more could I ask?

After 25 years of using my utility trailer, it is in need of new backing plates & brake assemblies. Your parts arrived in record time & the parts look to be perfect replacements for the road-weary rusty brake assemblies. The tail light lens also fit perfectly. Thank You for the quality products.

by:

I have a tandem axle car carrier with surge brakes. I'm probably a typical owner and never purged the brake fluid which resulted in rust in the system and frozen wheel cylinders. Rather than just buy new wheel cylinders I bought the complete assembly (wheel cylinder, backing plate, and brakes) since to replace the wheel cylinder you have to remove the backing plate anyway. I managed to complete all four wheels, plus adjust and bleed, in about six hours. The supplied units fit perfectly. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Exact match to my factory originals, excellent customer service and extremely knowledgeable on parts with excellent prices. Highly recommended etrailer.com

by:

I replaced both left and right hand side drum brake assemblies on my Bass boat tandem trailer. It was so easy, four bolts and a brake line and I'm done. I can't believe I got new cylinder, springs, shoes, backing plate for $44 each. I'm a manufacting Engineer and I'm impressed. You guys rock.

by:

Price was great. Fit and finish quality. Much easier than installing wheel cylinders and cleaning brake shoes.

by:

Delivered well before the promise date! Brakes were easy to install and everything etrailer said they would be. Not my first order from you guys and as always, you are easy to deal with and I will be back when I need more parts for my trailers

by:

The backing plate and brakes were great and intalled just fine. I ordered two sets of inner and outer bearings and seals. I received four sets of outer bearings so I had to hunt down inner bearings and seal locally. That was disappointing!

by:

I purchased brakes and drum hubs. This is my second time getting many trailer parts and have had great results with everything I have gotten. I also ordered these items on a Sunday and had them at my door Wednesday with free shipping. I give etrailer two big thumbs up on product quality and processing.

by:

product fit was spot on, installation was straightforward and the performance since installation, over 2500 miles of driving, has been flawless.

by:

Seems like good quality brakes. Took a while to receive. They said it would ship in 24-48 hours but it took 3 - 4 days to ship. And two more days to receive.

I only wished that the brakes had come with bolts to attach. Now I have to some bolts that are rated for this set of brakes.

I love the fact that they are all assembled! Keeps me from screwing it up.

by:

All the parts fit perfectly on my Shorelandr trailer

by:

product worked great. Easy to install , no hang ups , just bolt on , bleed the brake cylinder your good to go.

by:

Product arrived as described was easy to install and completed a restoration of my trailer. I was impressed with the speed of delivery and would certainly order again frm etrailer

Thank you

by:

Item arrived on time. Packaged well. Best price by far. Saved over $100.00 compared to other vendors. Very good communication from ETrailer. ETrailer followed up and made sure I was satisfied. I will buy all of my trailer needs from them in the future.

by:

Great price, fast shipping...product just as described. Will use ETrailer again for all my trailer supplies and needs.

by:

product is what I had ordered, fit like it should. No problems with mounting.

by:

Great product for the price. Super fast shipping. Only complaint was that item was all scratched up when I recieved it so I had to touch it up with paint to make sure it didn't rust.

by:

Prices are reasonable, the site was friendly/helpful, and the delivery of the product was expeditious.

  • Replacement Brake Assembly Recommendation for 1997 MasterCraft 20 ft Boat
Since your trailer has 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies currently all of the assemblies you mentioned are going to work. I would go with the sefl-adjusting part numbers # DMSB24428M and # DMSB24429M though since you mentioned you were interested in that option. The matching Titan assemblies are part # T4423500 for the left hand side and part # T4423400 for the right hand side. Based on the seal dimensions you listed the part # 168233 is the correct replacement. We don't carry...

If you install hydraulic brakes on one axle, the problem may still be present with the electric brakes and could cause further issues if not corrected. If you wish to send more information about the problems you are having with your system we may be able to resolve the issues you are having. • Free-backing Titan Brake Assembly # T4423400 Recommendation for a Sailboat Trailer
The choice of free backing brakes or not comes down to a couple different factors. If the trailer has a lockout (electric or hydraulic) then free backing plates would be redundant as their would already be a system that would allow for reversing without the brakes being activated. If you have a coupler that does not have a reverse lockout feature then free backing plates would be the solution to allow for backing up without activating the brakes. If it were me I would choose a setup that...

  • Can Titan Free-Baking Trailer Drum Brakes Be Used with Brake Actuating Couplers with Reverse Lockout
You can use Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly, # T4423400, with a brake actuating coupler with reverse lockout provided the actuator is designed for use with drum brakes. You will be able to back up whether the reverse lockout is engaged or not because hydraulic pressure is contained by the wheel cylinder nullifying the lockout. The hydraulic drum brakes that are good for marine applications are going to be the galvanized models like # 40716 as an example. Any assembly that does not have a special coating and/or is not galvanized then that would indicated it is powder coated steel, like # 23-312, and is not ideal for marine applications. It sounds like you have a leak in the system either in a brake line or at the actual wheel cylinder. If this is the case, you may not have to replace the entire hub or brake assembly, just the part that is leaking. A leak can also draw air into the system and cause the brakes to lock.
