Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-325 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12-inch right hand passenger side uni-servo hydraulic drum brake assembly for 5,200 pound axles. Now the hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed to be used with a surge type trailer brake actuator. These happen to be the uni-servo, which is a single plunger design. And these are manual adjustment brakes, so they do require period manual adjustment. You just adjust them down here where the adjustment gear is. Now, this one is a right-hand, passenger side brake assembly. Comes with the mounting lock washer nuts to install it.

And you can see there's no bolts on here. On a 12 inch size brake assembly, the brake mounting flange has the bolts on it. So, you just use these nuts to tighten this on to the brake mounting flange. Also, if you notice on the backing plate, it does come with an adjuster plug right here, that covers that access hole. That access hole's what you put your tool through to adjust your brakes with. When you're done adjusting, you can put your adjuster plug back in there.

What's nice about that is it covers that hole, keeps any dirt or grime from getting into your brake assembly, and off your brake shoes. A few specs on this, the size is a 12 inch by two inch brake assembly. And when they say 12 inch by two inch, the 12 inch is the diameter from this shoe to this shoe. If you put a ruler on it, there's your 12 inch. The two inch is the width of the pad on the brake shoe.

There's your two inch wide. And again, this goes, fits a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of five bolts. This does require the use of 12 inch brake drums. And it does use a wheel size of 14-1/2, 15 inch, and 16 inch. And again, it's designed for axles rated up to 5,200 pounds. And the last thing I want to mention to you is how to tell if it's a right hand or left hand side assembly.

This one's a right hand, and of course, on a new one, it'll have a sticker, which is that's easy enough. But if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest thing to do is look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. This pad goes from here to here. This one goes from here to here. This is a shorter pad, this is a longer pad. Shorter pad is you primary shoe, faces the front of the trailer, so that will tell you that this is a right hand passenger side assembly. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch right hand passenger side uni-servo hydraulic drum brake assembly for 5,200 pound axle.

  • Recommended Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System for Camper Trailer
Timbren axle-less suspension kits like # A35RS545E, which is rated for 3500-lbs and that includes electric drum (not disc) brakes, can make trailer fabrication a lot easier since they bolt or weld directly to the trailer's frame. This 3500-lb kit is the highest-rated kit that includes electric brakes. We also offer a similar kit with 4-inch drop spindles that allow the trailer to sit lower, part # A35RD545E. Note that two sets of Timbrens can be used together, as in a tandem axle set-up. In...

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for a Dexter D52 Axle
Your Dexter D52 axles should be rated at 5,200 lbs and use 12 inch brake assemblies. Going with a 6k rated brake assembly would be your best choice since they do not offer a 12 inch brake assembly with a 5,200 lb capacity. For that I would recommend the # 23-459 for the right hand side and the # 23-458 for the left hand side.

  • Which Timbren Axle Less System Allows Use of 8 Lug Hub/Drums
The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/ Brake Flange # TASR7KS01 is designed to be used with 8 lug trailer hubs part # 42866UC3-EZ. This is a 7k axle kit that would work well. For brake assemblies then you'd want the part # 23-324 for the left hand side and part # 23-325 for the right hand side and you'd be set.

  • Correct Hydraulic Brake Assembly for Dexter 8-201 Hub/Drum
The Dexter 8-201 is a common 12 x 2 inch hub/drum used on 5,200 or 6,000 lb capacity axles. The 23-324 left hand hydraulic brake assembly you mentioned would certainly be compatible. You would also need the right hand assembly, part # 23-325. For a marine application, I would recommend the Demco 12x2 Marine Hydraulic Brake Assembly, part # 23510 for the right side, and # 23511 for the left. These brake assemblies feature galvanized backing plates and stainless steel spring hardware.

  • Recommended Replacement Axles For Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
As long as the frame itself can handle the additional weight, you would need to upgrade all of the other components under that weight capacity including the coupler. I recommend using the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension - Spindle Only - Regular Tires - 5200 lbs # ASR5200S01. This will allow your to simply remove the existing suspension and axles and add a cross beam or add a piece of 2x3 inch tubing between the axles in the integrated holes. With these spindles, you can use the Trailer...

  • Recommended Hub and Drum and Brake Assemblies for Mobile Home Axles on Trailer
For your front axle, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 42866UC3. Then for your brakes, I recommend # 23-105 for the left hand (driver's side) and # 23-106 for the right hand. If you have hydraulic brakes, then I recommend # 23-324 and # 23-325 instead. For your rear axle, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 42865-KIT. If you need tires to match the hubs, I recommend the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" Silver Mod # LHAW133. These...

  • Replacement Hub and Drum and Hydraulic Brakes for a Cronkite Tandem Axle Trailer
Trailer hub and drum assembly # 8-201-5 does match your bearings. I am fairly certain you have 5,200 pound axles and not 3500 pound axles since all of the parts you need are for higher rated axles than 3500 pounds. The races come already pressed into the hub. If your wheels have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern then this is the hub for you. This hub and drum takes 12 x 2 inch brakes. The brake assemblies that fit and that are also rated for 5200 pound axles are # 23-324 for the left and # 23-325...

  • Brake Recommendation for Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-5UC3
Although we don't have a kit available, we do offer the parts that you will need. When it comes to brakes for Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 8-201-5UC3, that you mentioned, I recommend the following: 12" Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brake Assembly, # 23-458 for left hand and # 23-459 for right hand. If by chance you have a boat trailer we offer the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly, # 23-324 for left hand side and # 23-325 for right hand side. I have an easy solution for you, but the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # ASR5200S04 that you referenced is not available with hub/drums. What you will need is to also order the part # 8-201-5UC3-EZ for the hub drums and then part # 23-325 for the right hand brake assembly and # 23-324 for the left hand side.

If the brakes in the picture are 12 x 2 inch brakes then yes, you can use # 23-324 (left hand side) and # 23-325 (right hand side). These brakes are rated for 5,200 pound axles and use the 5-bolt mounting pattern as the brake in your picture. The new brakes are also uni-servo just like the one brake in your picture. Something else in your picture is interesting. I believe the brakes on there now are free backing brakes. These brakes would allow you to back up without the brakes engaging....

  • Availability of Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System With Hydraulic Brakes with 4000-lb Capacity
Both of the Timbren Axle-Less suspension systems with brakes that we offer have a 3500-lb capacity and both also feature electric brakes, not hydraulic brakes. Part # A35RD545E is a kit with 4-inch drop spindles and part # A35RS545E has straight spindles. Neither of these would have the capacity you need for your trailer. We do offer a Timbren system rated for 5200-lbs, part # ASR5200S01, which includes 5-bolt brake flanges. With these you could use hydraulic brake assemblies # 23-325...

  • Replacement Trailer Axle with 65-1/2 Inch Spring Center Measurement
I do have an option for you but we currently do not have a standard trailer axle with a distance of 65-1/2" from the center of each spring seat. Instead, I recommend taking a look at the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # ASR5200S01. This system will actually replace the axle and leaf sprigs with a set of rubber aeon springs that will do a much better job of absorbing road shock and support the trailer's load. This system has a 5,200 lb capacity but higher capacities are...

I have attached a link to the hub and drums we have that are designed for a 7,000 lb axle you can check out. If you do not have EZ-Lube axles I recommend part # 42866UC3. • Recommended Timbren Axle-Less System for Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Rated for 9,600 Pounds
The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - 4 Inch Lift Spindle w/ Brake Flange # TASR5200S03 referenced in your question will work great to replace the existing axle on your boat trailer. It can be used in a tandem axle setup (you will just need to order 2), and is compatible with hydraulic drum brakes. This has a weight capacity of 5,200 pounds, so when using two sets as a tandem axle, they will provide the capacity needed for your trailer. For compatible hub and drum assemblies,...

  • Recommended Ways To Lift 2008 StarCraft Centennial Trailer
Since you have a torsion axle you can use spacer blocks to get more ground clearance. There are lift kits available if you have Dexter axles. Normally, people use 2 inch by 3 inch, or 2 inch by 4 inch steel tubing with 3/16 or 1/4 inch wall thickness. Raising the trailer will change the geometry of your trailer making it more top heavy and you may have more trailer sway. If you have leaf springs on your trailer you can add longer hangers. You would need to cut off the old ones and have...

  • Recommended Axles For Boat Trailer To Switch To Much Larger Wheels
Replacing the spindle on an axle is very difficult because the spindle needs to be exact and concentric or it can cause issues with tires and wheels. And any axle that has been designed for a spindle with a 4-bolt pattern will most likely not work with any spindles designed for an 8-bolt drum and wheel. If you have 13 inch tires on a wheel that has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and switch to a 16 inch wheel with an 8 bolt pattern means you are going to raise the trailer up by about 3 inches. One...

  • Axle Recommendation for Trailer Carrying 9,000 Lbs
Since you mention that your trailer will max out 9,000 pounds, which I assume includes the weight of the trailer frame and all cargo, I recommend going with the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension, # ASR5200S01. I spoke with my shop manager regarding whether he felt using the 5,200 pound axles would be overkill. He strongly recommends going with an axle that has a higher capacity than the amount of weight that you plan to carry and feels that the 5,200 capacity axles would be a good choice....

This axle-less system comes with the brake flange and will work for 1 and 2 axle trailers that use regular, low pressure tires. The brakes I recommend for this system are 12 inch electric brakes like part # 23-106 for the right hand and part # 23-105 for the left. Yes, you should be able to switch your triple axle gooseneck trailer over to hydraulic drum brakes from the existing electric brakes.
