If you're replacing a busted or rusted-out spring on your trailer - or if you've decided to upgrade to dacromet to avoid rusted-out springs down the line - the first thing you'll need to do is measure your existing leaf springs. Take a look at the measurements above. If these dimensions - and the weight rating - match what you currently have, you should be good to go.

Remember, though, your leaf springs can flatten a bit over time. And if you're measuring your spring while your trailer is fully loaded, the overall length that you get might be a bit more than what you need a brand new, unloaded spring to measure.

Rustproof Your Trailer Suspension with Dacromet

Slipper Spring Dacromet

As you travel across highways and backroads, your trailer's leaf springs are going to corrode and flake over time. This is especially true if you have a boat trailer that's regularly submerged in water. Completely rusted-out springs on trailers are all too common, and these dacromet springs are a great solution to that problem.

Dacromet Versus Rusty Springs Comparison

Longer-lasting springs will save you money and are great for any trailer, but they are a must have for folks who live or play by the water. If you live on the coast, you're probably always rinsing the saltwater off of your trailer to try and keep rust at bay. If you're really worried, you might've even tried to repaint your springs or spray them down with rust inhibitors. But upgrading to these dacromet-coated leaf springs could cut down on or eliminate all of that maintenance, leaving you more time to spend out on the water.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. We conducted our own salt spray test and found that this dacromet coating lasts up to 744 hours before it begins to deteriorate. Compare that to some other dacromet coatings out there that are rated at just 300 hours - or zinc coatings that don't last for even that long - and you can be sure these springs will last.

Slipper Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Slipper Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • 27 Long Slipper Springs for a Boat Trailer
We do have 27" slipper springs. They are the 5-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Hook End item # e67SR. These springs are 2" wide and have a 3,000 lbs capacity per spring. They have 5-leafs instead of your 3 but will work just fine on your boat trailer if your current springs are 2" wide. The closet springs we have that are only 1-3/4" wide are the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End for 4,300-lb Trailer Axles item # e33SR. These are 26-1/4" long.

  • Replacement Boat Trailer Slipper Spring for a 1998 Calkins Boat Trailer
Based on what you have described and the measurements you have taken I do believe that slipper spring # e33SR is correct. The # e33SR length is 26-1/4 inches so the mid-point length of your existing spring is on par with that. The old springs have probably stretched and worn enough to throw the exact measurement off a bit.

  • How to Measure Leaf Springs to Find Replacement Parts
The 26-1/4 inch measurement of # e33SR is taken center on center from one bolt to the other. On the diagram I've attached it's measurement "C". This is the measurement you'll want to make on your springs. Then find the same length for a replacement. Keep in mind that your springs, being used and worn, may have elongated so your might be a little longer than the new ones.

  • Recommended Replacement 26-1/4" Slipper Spring
Thanks for the picture! I have something close to your 26" slipper springs. It is possible to switch to a two eye leaf spring or even go down to a four leaf spring with a higher capacity. If you wanted to switch it up to a two eye leaf spring I would need to know the distance from the center of the two bolts. You can email me back that measurement if you decide to make the change. The 26-1/4" Long 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End item # e33SR with a protective coating is the closest...

  • Recommended Replacement Leaf Springs for a 2007 Karavan Boat Trailer
Hey Jacques, so based off of those measurements it looks like the etrailer Rust-Resistant 4-Leaf Slipper Spring for 4,300-lb Trailer Axles # e33SR is going to work best for you. This spring measures 26 1/4" (same as 2/8) long from spring eye to end of spring, 13 1/8" from eye bolt to center of the spring, and has a capacity of 2,150 lbs. I've also gone ahead and attached the entire diagram of this spring with measurements for you to check as well.

  • Slipper Spring Suspension Replacement on 1991 Shorelander
A bushing isn't required for slipper springs, but if your bolt has one it would reside in the "C" pocket at the end of the spring. The one thing that would worry me is that extra drilled hole on that hanger being too close to the original one and the strength of the hanger being compromised. There are hangers that have two holes in them so you can use either height setting, but they come from the factory that way-these are either drilled after the fact or very worn and it wouldn't be a...

  • Hanger Kit Recommendation for Slipper Leaf Spring # e33SR
Sounds like what you are in need of is a single axle hanger kit for the leaf spring part # e33SR that you mentioned. For that you'd only need the # APS3SE and you'd be set. This gives you the hangers for the front and rear for the spring as well as the correct nut and bolt to hold it all. For a u-bolt kit you'd then want the part # CE23103 for the axles.

For the spring eye you would use the Spring-Eye Bolt with Locknut for Slipper Springs - 3-1/2" Long # 166079, but slipper springs don't have the second spring eye, so a bolt is not used on the back end. You can also use a wet bolt like # 126B2, for less friction. Each spring is rated at 2,050 lbs. For a lighter rated spring with very similar dimensions that would work check out part # e29SR. It has a 1,000 lb capacity. It doesn't have the hook at then of the spring, but it would work much better. Sounds like you were already planning on doing it, but you...

  • Correct Bushing and Bolt for 4-Leaf Slipper Spring # e33SR
The 4-Leaf Slipper Spring # e33SR that you referenced actually comes included with the nylon bushing but if a replacement is needed then the 9/16 inch # TRBU11561 that you mentioned would be the correct size and will work perfectly. • Is It Normal For Open Eye Spring To Hit Frame Of Trailer When Loaded?
Thanks for the picture! The spring shouldn't hit the frame like yours does in the picture, so the correct solution would be to either add a longer front hanger or using a shorter spring. The correct replacement hanger will be dependent on the width of your spring. If you have a 1-3/4" wide spring the longest hanger we offer is the CE Smith Front Hanger Bracket for Trailer Slipper Springs # CE14016G which is 2-1/4" tall. I can help you determine how to figure out the right replacement slipper springs, though I'm not 100% certain what you mean by "where can I find how much space or clearance is required." I think you are asking if there is a standard amount a slipper spring will elongate over time, and the answer is unfortunately no, as it all depends on the amount of weight on the spring, the amount of time it was used, the quality of the spring, etc. I would take into account an inch or so of your slipper...

  • Replacing Slipper Springs on 1990 EZ Loader Boat Trailer With 3500 Axle
As they wear, leaf springs tend to flatten out. The first step is to get the correct length of the existing springs. In order to do that, you'll need to put the trailer up on jack stands and measure them (center eye to center of the slipper) with the axle hanging free. I'd recommend getting that measurement, then getting back with me with the measurement you get. I honestly couldn't say what the original suspension of your boat trailer was, if you could reply with the VIN of the trailer,...

Slipper springs come in 1-3/4 inch, 2 inch, 2-1/2 inch, and 3 inch widths, so you most likely do have a 1-3/4 inch width spring set, especially since you mentioned that it looks a bit over 1-1/2 inches. It sounds like you already have done the correct center of one eye to the center of the other eye measurement. If your measurement is slightly off, sometimes the leaf spring may still work as leaf springs do expand by as much as 3/4-inch over time. Since you measured 26" and the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End for 4,300-lb Trailer Axles # e33SR is already 26-1/4" long, you will want a shorter option though I don't see we have that in an open eye end style of spring.
