How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This was supposed to be powder-coated. It was obviously spray painted and done very poorly. There are runs all over it. I think the manufacturer found this lying around and decided to touch it up and ship it. In fact I think they put it in the box still wet with paint. For the extra money made in the USA I was very disappointed. It will be going back and we'll see if the next one has better quality control. The mechanism itself seemed very robust.

by:

like that it is very well made in USA

The Jack was easy to install and etrailer was the only place I could find the right one to fit my very old (1999) tent trailer.

by:

This is great! After 9 months of searching for a replacement jack (and 3 jack circumference sizes that did not work)for our 2004 Viking Epic popup camper, this one fits! Its perfect! Thank you! Very happy!

by:

it has been doing fine with no problem

by:

Once I modified my camper tongue, the jack fit and operated flawlessly.

by:

I would only say that the retracted "up" position of the jack does NOT have enough ground clearance , absent the wheel, to guarantee there is NO contact with concrete when entering/exiting a sloped concrete driveway.

by:

Most 1000 lb jacks are too wide for older camper trailers like mine. This was the only option i could find with a diameter of 2 inches! Took some elbow greasr, but once it went in the rest was easy and the included hardware worked very well. I would recommend adding 3-6 washers as they're not included and make a difference. It cranks clean and smooth! Great product so far. Customer service was very active and helpful in making sure I got what I needed and there were no issues. Odelia was very helpful! Thank you etrailer!

by:

Exactly what I needed super easy to ins tall.

by:

The trailer jack was easy to install and works great. The removable foot is very convenient.

by:

Does whats its supposed to.

by:

Unfortunately my initial search for a replacement for the Atwood Model 80274 suggested the Pro Series 2000 LB jack. But trying to install that jack I found it was too big. However talking directly to customer service they were able to direct me to thing model jack which was a direct replacement that I needed. They took back the wrong jack with no problems.

by:

This was a good replacement for the original on our vintage camper. Pretty simple - just used a grinder to remove the welded on old one, and bolts to attach the new.

by:

Nice fit great product

by:

Once again, etrailer impresses me. Ordered my jack stand on Friday and it arrived on Saturday. What great service!

by:

The trailer jack for Our old (1996) tent trailer was received in a timely manner in good condition. It was easy to install and appears to work well. Very easy to operate and good instructions were included.

by:

This jack is the perfect fit for our trailer with a 2" hole. etrailer.com had all the details listed (not like other sites) so that I could purchase with confidence. Strong jack with lock on (pin) wheel. etrailer.com is my new go to site for trailer needs.

by:

*Although I have not installed the trailer jack yet it looks like a direct replacement for the original one on my boat trailer. The wheel that goes with the jack definitely looks like a better fit than original.
*The electrical 4 conductor plug set... I'm using for a quick disconnect for a third
( center ) brake light for tailgaters

by:

Quality product that fit perfectly! I am a frequent customer of etrailer and am always satisfied.

by:

This trailer Jack has all the capacity and lift height I need. It cranks easy, has a nice finish and in my opinion, of good quality.

by:

Great company to deal with.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for. A jack that has a 2-inch outer diameter.

by:

The service was great. It shipped quickly and I received what I ordered. The product seems heavy duty as I was expecting. The action of the jack feels appropriate and only time will tell if I truely got what I paid for. I haven't had a chance to try raising the trailer while it was loaded to really know if it is truely the heavy duty jack that I needed. I will keep this email message and try to remember to let you know how I feel about your merchandise. Thank you for your interest.

  • USA Made A-Frame 2,000 Lbs Top Wind Trailer Jack
I reached out to my contact at Future 2 Solutions and he advised me that the Ultimate Trail A-Frame Jack # 322-RDJ-2K is made overseas. If you are looking for a USA made A-frame trailer jack, the Dutton Lainson jacks are all made in the USA. The A-Frame Trailer Topwind Jack # DL22781 has a 2,000lb weight rating and no drop leg like the # 322-RDJ-2K you inquired about.

  • Trailer Jacks Manufactured in the USA
There are some Dutton-Lainson trailer jacks that are made in the USA as well as a few that are not. Any jacks that we carry that are made in the USA have that as part of the description to help set them apart. Currently we have the following options: Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 8" Wheel - Sidewind - 1,500 lbs. # DL22800 Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 6" Wheel - Sidewind - 1,000 lbs. # DL22560 A-Frame Trailer Jack - Sidewind - 1,000 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson # DL22530 Pull...

  • Recommended Replacement Jack for 2300 lb Pop-Up Camper
You did just fine! What you'll need is a jack that can handle the tongue weight of the trailer, not its entire weight. A trailers tongue weight is typically 10-15% of its total weight, so in your case the highest capacity you'll really need is about 350 lbs. That being said, choosing a trailer jack is one instance where you'll want to go for the overkill as far as capacity goes. A higher rated jack will be more heavily constructed and because of the reserve capacity it won't need to work...

  • 2,000 Pound A-frame Trailer Jack thats Made in the USA
Curt trailer jacks like part # C28200 are all made in China. A lot of trailer jacks are but we do have the Dutton-Lainson which has similar specs to the Curt and is made in the USA if that's what you're looking for. Look at part # DL22781. It has the same 2,000 pound capacity with 14 inches of travel and fits the standard A-frame bolt pattern just like the Curt.

  • Troubleshooting Holes Not Aligning on Trailer with Ultimate Jack Trailer Jack
The # 322-RDJ-2K Ultimate Trailer Jack can be rotated in any direction as long as one of the holes is facing forward. So rotating the jack will not be a problem. As for aligning the holes, I would not recommend modifying the jack in any way, since that can void its warranty. If you are having trouble mounting the jack to the trailer I recommend changing the mounting holes in the trailer so they match the holes on the jack. I have attached a video review for your reference.

  • Recommended Made in the USA A-Frame Trailer Jack
Bulldog A-frame jacks like the # BD155033 are made overseas, but there are some Made in the USA options available. If you're looking for an American made A-Frame trailer jack, the A-Frame Trailer Jack - Topwind - 2,000 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson # DL22781 has very similar specs and is made in Hastings, NE. Since this jack doesn't come with a foot/wheel you can use either the Removable Steel Foot with Pin for A-Frame Trailer Jacks by Dutton-Lainson # DL22542 or Removable Wheel with Pin for...

  • Choosing a Replacement A-Frame Trailer Jack for Pop-Up Camper
I will assume you are looking for an A-frame mounted jack, because that is what pop-ups typically use, and because that is the part you referred to. The bolt hole pattern is standard, so matching up with the holes in the trailer tongue should not be a problem. You would want to choose a jack whose capacity is greater than the tongue weight of the pop-up, which is typically 10-15 percent of the fully loaded trailer weight. The Dutton-Lainson # DL22781 jack you mentioned should have more...
