Video Transcript for etrailer A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - CA5400 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the A-frame, thumb latch trailer coupler, with an oily finish for the two and five sixteenths hitch ball. This A frame coupler will let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle, provides the connection point right here for the hitch ball. It is a thumb latch design, which makes it very easy to clamp around the ball. Basically to open it up you just pull the latch up, slide it back towards the trailer, and it'll open the ball socket ready for the hitch ball. Then to close it you slide the latch forward and it'll close around the ball. I did happen to pull a two and five sixteenths diameter ball, just to show you how this connects. Again, as we mentioned, to open it just lift up and slide it back, that'll open up the ball socket, goes over the hitch ball.

You just push it forward, you can see that it'll lock right into place. To remove it same way, just release it like that. Now this is made of a sturdy steel construction, this one does have an oily finish to provide corrosion resistance, as you can look at my hand, you can see how the finish is very oily. It is an A frame design, as you can see right here, it mounts to a fifty degree trailer tong. It is a weld-on installation.

This SAEJ684 certified, if you notice on the very back here, the round hole with the three holes, this is a built in jack attachment point. Allows for quick, easy mounting of a round utility jack. The diameter of the hole that the jack goes through, put a measurement on that, it's going to be right at two and a quarter inches. If you notice it does have three threaded holes for installation of the jack. It does require three, three eights by sixteen bolts for installing the jack. The ball size again that it fits on is a two and five sixteenths diameter.

Total weight capacity is fourteen thousand pounds, tongue weight capacity is twenty-one hundred pounds. There is a pinhole right here, that if you do want extra security to lock it, you get a coupler lock, it does have a five sixteenths diameter pinhole diameter. Give you a few overall dimensions, we're going to measure the width, from this edge to this edge. If I put a tape measure on it, it's going to be right at ten and seven eighths inches wide, and in the overall length, from this end to this very end right here. If you can see, is going to be right at twelve and seven eights inches long. That should do it for the review on the A frame, thumb latched trailer coupler with the oily finish, for a two and five sixteenths hitch ball..

Have used this product before with Etrailers. Price can't be beat. Will purchase with Etrailers in the neat future.

by:

This trailer coupler worked fine for me. I'd recommend it and will probably get another one in the future.

by:

Tongue is as advertised and size seems to match the trailer perfectly. Haven't had a chance to have it welded yet but don't anticipate any problems. It definitely has an oily finish. Wear gloves when handling if you don't want it all over your fingers.

Everything seems to work just fine. We have used this 12,000 lb GVWR trailer to haul cars, trucks, and other sorts of cargo over the past year, and the frame coupler has been as strong as it needed to be. We are very satisfied with this product

Product is perfect for this 74 X 120 stucco crew trailer w/7k axle and G rated tires. Very good price and quality. I'll buy again as needed.

After one year, still great service.

by:

I had a one time need to put a long tongue on trailer to enable me to haul a 60' sail boat hull to the shipyard.

I welded the hitch to a 16' 4" x 5" box beam along with 2" x 2" angles at the angles provided in the Hitch shape. The other ends to the trailer, loaded the boat, and Viola! It all went with only one hitch, the one I bought.

Great help!

by:

Works! is overkill for the trailer it was installed on but wanted a one ball setup so I could stop changing the ball every time I switched trailers

by:

The price's at etrailer are great. The trailer Coupler I purchased looks to be better quality than what my trailer was built with. The folks at etrailer are great to do business with, great service, great shipping, as a matter of fact...they even put a rush on my shipping without charging extra for it.....You know I will be back!

  • Troubleshooting Coupler that is Difficult to Latch onto Hitch Ball
The latching mechanisms of couplers can pretty easily get corroded or dirty to the point they become difficult to operate. Best bet is to spray down the mechanism liberally with a spray lube like WD40 and see if that frees up the latch to allow it to install easier. A lot of couplers have adjustable latches as well. If you look under the coupler and see a nut maybe try loosening it a bit so that it could come down and latch onto the ball a bit easier. In the picture I attached of the #...

  • Replacement for Weld-On A-Frame Coupler with 14,000 lb Capacity
The coupler you referenced does not have replacement parts or a latch repair kit so if the thumb latch is busted you will need to replace the unit with the A-Frame Coupler # CA5400. You can replace it with the same unit, the A-Frame Coupler # CA5400 which has has an oily finish but the same one is available without the oily finish and a black coat of paint, the A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5400-B. There is another option if you want to go with a different manufacturer, the Fulton A-Frame...

  • Coupler Replacement Recommendation for a 10k Pintle Trailer for Installing Weight Distribution
Weight distribution systems can't be used with the pintle setups. The only option you would have for installing one would be to remove the ring on your trailer and install a coupler. I attached a link to a page that has all of the A-frame couplers we offer. The part # CA5400 would be a great option. This has a 14k capacity and is designed to fit a 2-5/16 inch ball. If your cargo is going to weigh around 10k most likely you are going to need a higher rated system though. For that the part...

  • Can Surge A-Frame Coupler be Replaced with a Fixed Coupler

  • Determining Year of Manufacture Based on VIN Number
Your Trailer Vin should be able to give you the year it was manufactured. If your Vin is the 17 digit traditional format post early 1980's, then the 10th digit will give you the ending digit of the year it was manufactured. I've attached a photo to assist with the code. When you say Paris Trailer, all I can find is Paris Custom Trailers or PJ trailers, both of which are located in Paris, Texas. They may be able to assist if you don't have the 17 digit VIN. The etrailer A-frame Coupler part # ca5400 is a direct weld-on application. You will weld along the edge of the coupler. I recommend having a qualified welder or trailer professional install the coupler. This coupler works with 2-5/16 inch hitch balls and has a 14,000 lbs capacity. • Difficulty Finding VIN on Old Ranger Trailer
The VIN on your Ranger might be in a number of possible locations. Typically the number will be found toward the front of the trailer frame, on an inside-facing surface. If you cannot locate the information there, I recommend simply looking up and down the frame along the length of the trailer. If you find that a VIN is simply not present, and you do not have any paperwork with this information, you may be able to have your local state police or highway patrol assign a new one for the trailer.

  • How to Adjust etrailer Weld-On A-Frame 2-5/16-Inch Coupler # CA5400
The etrailer Weld-On A-Frame 2-5/16-Inch Coupler, part # CA5400, does not have any adjustment screw to enable you to take up the slack in the fit with your hitch ball. This coupler is produced by a stamping process and this type of manufacturing method will have some slight variances from one unit to another. The 1/4-inch play you find is fairly typical. You can test the security of the attachment at the hitch ball by using your trailer jack to lift the nose of the trailer while the coupler...

To switch back to a jack like the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack # BD1750290317 you are going to want to replace your Coupler # CA5400 or weld in a new section to bolt the jack onto. • Troubleshooting A-Frame Weld-On Coupler Not Going Over Hitch Ball Smoothly
There are a few reasons why you might be having some difficulty latching your A-Frame Weld-On Coupler # CA5400. First, I recommend making sure that the coupler is unlatching completely when you are uncoupling from the hitch ball. It's possible that it is unlatching just enough to release from the ball but not all the way, making for a more difficult connection when hooking back up to the tow vehicle. I also recommend making sure that the coupler is free of dirt, debris or corrosion, as...
