Video Transcript for Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - BD44125W0317 Review

Today we're going to review part number BD44125W0317. This is the Bulldog heavy-duty cast head coupler for an A-frame coupler. This heavy-duty coupler is ideal for the utility, livestock, cargo, and construction trailers. It is designed to fit on the A-frame design trailers, and it does mount to the 50-degree trailer tongue, which is the normal measurement on your A-frame trailers. Now this is a cast head design that you can see is welded to the high-strength steel part right here that attaches to your trailer. This is a wedge-style latch or a trigger latch, as you can see right here.

As I operate it you can see it underneath there. This is very secure and easy to use. As you'll notice on the top here, on the high-strength steel section, there is a hole with three mounting holes. This is a built-in jack attachment point, which will allow for quick, easy mounting of a round utility jack on your trailer. This uses a ball size of 2-5/16".

What I'm going to show you is I've got an example of a 2-5/16" hitch ball right here. So if we put that in there, you can see as you open the latch, it would fall onto it. You let the latch go, lock it into place. And as you can see, it pretty much stays in place right there. Then to release it, just lift up on the latch, and you can remove it from the 2-5/16" hitch ball.

Capacity on this coupler is 12,500 lbs. It does come with a limited 5-year warranty. And I just want to give you an overall length of this coupler. If we go from the top of the cast head to the edge of the steel, it's going to be 18" long. That should do it for the review on part number BD44125W0317, the Bulldog heavy-duty cast head coupler for the A-frame couplers.

I purchased a new trailer that has a v nose. Didn't realize that the 50 degree frame rails are much shorter with the V. I have an existing weight distribution hitch that would not fit due to the short length of the frame rails. This coupler added an extra 4" of length for me to use my hitch. I purchased the weld on model because it had no holes. I transferred the existing holes on the frame rails to the new coupler and mounted up beautifully. I have not pulled with it yet but am completely happy with my purchase. Quick shipping, quality product and a good price. What more do you want?

  • Is a Bulldog Collar Harder to Latch Than a Wedge A-Frame Trailer Coupler
In regards to the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch part # BD028463, you will indeed need to be more centered over the hitch ball in order to couple in comparison to the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch part # BD44125W0317 which will more or less center itself with enough pressure. For that reason, I do prefer the trigger/wedge style.

None has a powder coated finish. The only bolt-on unit we offer is the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler with Wedge Latch, part # BD44150WH301. This unit has a galvanized finish. Weld-on couplers are available in oily, primer-only and painted finishes but not actual powder-coated (baked-on) finishes....

  • Difference Between the Bulldog Wedge and the Collar Lock Couplers
The distance between the center of the ball hole to the center of the circle used for A-frame jacks on the part # BD44125W0317 that you referenced is 12-1/2 inches. I confirmed this with my contact at Bulldog. The advantages between the latching styles of the wedge latch in the # BD44125W0317 and the collar lock like in part # BD028499 is largely personal preference. But the wedge is easier to lock with an anti-theft device. The collar lock style is more rugged and crude design with larger...

  • Wedge Style Latches Vs. Trigger Latches on A-Frame Couplers
The main difference between the wedge style latches and the trigger latches is in the capacity of the coupler. The lighter capacity couplers will use a trigger latch, whereas the higher capacity couplers will use wedge latches. For example, the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch # BD44125W0317 that you referenced uses a wedge latch and has a capacity of 12,500 lbs. An A-Frame Coupler # CA5100B uses a trigger latch and has a capacity of 5,000 lbs. Either style will work...
