How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This was the third jack for an tandem enclosed cargo trailer that weighs about 7000 pounds loaded. The trailer belongs to a Non-profit living history group of which I am the "Seneschal" which essentially means the guy with the truck big enough to pull the trailer. My responsibilities also include repair and maintenance of all of the gear and the trailer. The original jack was damaged and I had purchased a "speed jack" from another company and installed it last October and did not use the trailer until April of this year. One use and that jack failed. Upon dissection I discovered that the Chinese manufacturer failed to lubricate it and the bearings were rusted and in various stages of disintegration. After a bit of cursing and a bit more internet research I found etrailer. Once I abandoned the idea of a "speed jack" and went with the drop jack, I found that etrailer had what I needed at a competitive price. Calling etrailer lead to a delightful experience rich with excellent customer service with likes of which I have never experienced in my 58 years. I ordered it and was pleasantly surprised when etrailer upgraded my shipping for free. The parts even arrived a day earlier than the upgraded date. I have installed the jack and everything fit as promised. I have attached a picture. I must emphasize that this company has the best customer service that I have ever encountered.

Very happy with the product and with your service. Thanks!

Wow this bulldog jack is awesome I use it daily on my concession trailer, easy to use and very durable thanks etrailer.com

by:

Installed the tounge jack yesterday.fits perfect works great .no issues what so ever.i love etrailer and its staff!!!!absolutely wonderful very knowledgeable and extremely helpful and quick to reply.I HIGLY recommend etrailer.

by:

Works great, much smoother lift and ergonomic design than cheap stock jack. Leaves enough clearance with handle retrated to clear the tail gate on my truck.

by:

The item was perfect and fit on my trailer. The shipment came in right away and the package was of high quality. Thanks

by:

The jack and foot appear to be an exact match to the damaged jack I am replacing. I also appreciate the fast shipping and follow ups by etrailer. Plan to purchase from them again. I will update this review after the new jack has been installed on the trailer.

by:

From time of order to delivery was four days. It bolted right up to my car trailer without any issues. It cranks up/down with a load with nearly no effort. So far so good. I'll up date after a few more uses if it fails. Seems like a quality piece of equipment for being cheep in price. The one it replaced lasted about eight years and paid $160 for it.

by:

The hardest part about installing it was taking the old, rusted version off the trailer. I usually prefer side crank handles, but couldn't find the appropriate model/weight limit combo so bought this one instead. I was pleasantly surprised at the easy of which this one cranks up and down. I'm a fan of Bulldog products.

by:

Have used this model of jack on two different trailers. So far, the older one is 2 years old and it has held up well. It's used on a tandem-axle car hauler. It's seen a lot of use and still works like new. I bought a 2nd one for a smaller utility trailer based on the good experience with the 1st one. It has not been installed yet.

by:

My trailer came with a 3000lb capacity jack which was fine for regular use, but adding weight distribution and a lot of forward cargo really showed after a year. This replaced the previous BullDog jack incredibly easy. The hardest part was really getting the new one out of the super secure packaging.

by:

Product was exactly as advertised, and got here earlier than expected. I plan to use it on an old pickup truck frame which I am converting into a pull behind trailer. The jack mounts perfectly into the coupler I ordered with it. Staff very helpful and efficient.

by:

Installed on a 23 foot enclosed trailer. Trailer is loaded to roughly 7000lbs. This jack works fantastic! My order was shipped fast, thanks guys.

by:

I can't believe I waited 5 years to replace my broken trailer jack. After using blocks of wood, floor jacks and feats of daring to raise and lower my trailer, I finally took a chance and bought a replacement. If only my foot was longer I could kick myself you know where. This has been the best thing I've done in a while. Don't be afraid to buy from etrailer. They have an excellent product and a very good price. Go ahead and take a chance, you won't be sorry.

by:

Love the A- Frame Jack. It is much better than my old one. I had never installed one before, but I viewed your installation video and it was easy as 1-2-3 to install. I ordered the product and it arrived days earlier than I thought. Everyone was very helpful and professional. I would recommend etrailer.com to all my friends and family.

by:

The Bulldog jack raises the tongue 3/4"-1" higher than other similar jacks. The crank rod is very strong and the knob makes cranking much easier than jacks with a handle.

by:

Easy to install. Did not come with new bolt so we had to go out and get some because the old ones broke while we were taking time off. The handle is pretty stiff to fold away at first but some WD-40 helped.

by:

I installed this on my 24' enclosed trailer and works well and easy to raise and lower with no effort. Worth the money.

by:

good product and price

by:

I receive my order in good time I knew what was going on with my order at all times
I was able to track my order doing shipping
My new Trailer Jack & Hitch Cover was well packed and easy to install

Thank You

by:

etrailer never fails me. Have always the right parts I am looking for in stock with fast delivery. Keep coming back for all my trailer needs.

by:

perfect replacement and 1,000 lbs stronger than original for less. advice I'd offer is to determine if you need a top or side winder, your trucks tail gate will appreciate you :)

by:

Very good quality as I expected. Very fast delivery. Have now bought several items from etrailer and I’ll be back. Great selection of products also.

by:

great jack has a short top neck so it doesn't hit my tailgate when it is down

by:

Good jack. I prefer the top horizontal handle and this one works great. etrailer does on line right!

by:

Second product I ordered from etrailer with absolutely no issues. Trailer jack is exactly what was described and fit my trailer with no modifications. Best price with great service!!

  • Recommendations For Allowing Trailer Jack To Be Able To Swing Up Without Hitting Ground
I would be happy to help! There is a few options to get the increased clearance you need to raise your trailer so you can stow away your jack when not in use. I recommend replacing the coupler with a standard a-frame coupler you would still be able to get the coupler off the hitch without hitting the spare tire as it would be the same height. With an A-Frame coupler like the # DM14791-97 installed this would raise the trailer a few inches so you could keep using your jack, or it has...
