Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Purchased a new set of tires for my 22 ft enclosed cargo trailer. Moved from west coast to Midwest hometown. After several trips, the tries performance was flawless. Highly recommend! Thanks.

by:

Parts arrived on time in great shape everything went together like dream no problems my trailer looks great and I know it will be easer to maintain, the info on the web site was great with having the bearings in hand picking the correct hubs was easy with them listed with the hubs.
Thank you for having great info to make finding what a person needs.

by:

I bought this as a spare tire for my trailer and it is an exact match both tire and rim of whats on the there now. It showed up sooner than expected and even the packaging was in good condition. I have been dealing with Etrailer for about ten years and have no plans on changing!

by:

Our next trip is coming up fast so the quick ship time was very much appreciated. I've already installed the tires on our camper and they look great. The Rims are made in the USA.

Still very happy with these tires and rims. I cleaned the rims last weekend and they still look great.

by:

Tires came on time as sales said. So far a good looking tire and rim. Tires have a deep thread.

by:

This product looks great! Very well made. I am using it as a spare tire for my trailer because it did not come with one when I bought it. Delivery was on time and fast.

by:

Arrived on time with no damage from carrier one year later being out in the elements the whole time, no rust or paint chipping off of cheaper 4 white wheels been on very rough terrain no flats. Took on about 18 trips so far this year about 4,000 miles. Very pleased.

by:

I asked if the tires were balanced when I ordered them, and I was told they were, but they may need to be balanced again due to handling. There were no balance weights on any of the wheels. You draw your own conclusion whether (true or false statements) were made.

The wheel and tire combos we have are not balanced from the manufacturer. What they do when the tire is mounted to the wheel is match the high [heavy] spot on the wheel to thw low [light] spot on the tire. This does leave the wheel and tire somewhat balanced. You can have the tire professionally balanced if you want once you receive them, but having perfectly balanced tires is not as important with trailer tires as it is with a passenger vehicles.

by:

I had a great experience with the customer service team. The gentleman assisting me was extremely knowledge and guided me to the correct tire for my boat trailer

by:

I bought these tires and wheels for my abused, manure trailer. The old ones were rusty and had uneven wear on the tires. Plus, they are pretty old and dry rotten. I like the simplicity of ordering tires and wheels online and having them delivered right to my garage door. Well packaged, good price and even set to the proper air pressure! Thank you.

by:

Package arrived sooner and better than expected etrailer always a win

by:

Great product, fit just as it should. Will buy again. Put them on a 32 foot Brook side travel
Trailer.

by:

Got here sooner than expected ty to the agent for helping me switch my order to get faster shipping will definitely recommend

by:

Great set of tires and wheels looks good but most of all matched set for my trailer and feels safer than different tire on each hub that came off cars that were used tires and already worn out before they were put on the trailer. 2 blow outs on this trip. That did it. I bought 4 new tires and rims and now no worry about safety. What a good feeling!

by:

Wheel arrived on schedule and in goos solid wheel box for shipping damage protection.
Will order again through trailer as needed.

by:

Purchased four Kenda Karrier Steel Tires and Wheels for our horse trailer. They are great! And etrailer provided excellent customer service! My mechanic had me order one set of four, only to find out that our trailer has mobile home axles, so we had to return the first set of four and order a different set. Their customer service made that super easy, and they refunded for the first set promptly. On both orders their shipping was quick too. Service doesn't get much better than this!

by:

I had ordered this, and got a error part, but they fixed it immediately. I do much business with them & it was the first mistake ever. These people are awesome!

by:

very informative website. Super fast order! got here in two days! everything was perfect! I would highly recommend them!

by:

I ordered these wheels and tires for a 31 foot bumper-pull camper and they were delivered on time. I checked the dates on the tires and all 4 had very recent manufacture dates. Tires were mounted and inflated, but were not up to the recommended pressure for the load. It's not a big deal to air them up a little more and you should check your tire pressures before every trip anyway. I just added this info to let people know that you can't just throw them on and go.

by:

Recevied tires in great shape. Installed om my trailer very easily. They look great on our trailer.

by:

Tires (3) were shipped SUPER fast. Tires were mounted well and aired to running pressure already. They were good quality at a great price.

by:

Wheels are great !! and I have to say the customer service is even better!
I needed these wheels before our trip but they weren't going to make it in time.
I reached out to customer service and they were more than happy to change the ship to address to accommodate my needs. Wheels came in and I changed them on site and we were able to bring the trailer back from Texas to Indiana with no issues.
Can't thank you folks enough for the great service, great price and quality products.
Sincerely
Adrian S.

I found it extreemely easy to order the correct tire and rim. The system narrowed down the choices by asking the correct questions in order to determine the applicable product. This is at least the third item I have ordered via etrailer and I have been happy every time.

The order response time is very quick. Etrailer has a very effecient order filling/packaging/shipping system. All orders were received quickly, packaged well and undamaged.

A small thing (small because this is a spare tire for my trailer) I wish I could have ordered a metal valve stem as I use a TPMS that attaches to the stem. However this is a spare tire/rim and I can live with the standard rubber valve stem for the short time/miles it will actually be driven on. Note: I carry two spares so I am not forced to purchase on the road.

by:

These wheels/tires are for our High School Marching Band trailer so we have a lot riding on them. I did the research on the product before searching for a vendor and 2 coworkers recommended etrailer.com. Your website was easy to navigate, you had the product I needed at the best price, shipping was free and the wheels arrived in a few short days in perfect condition. My experience could not have been any better from start to finish and I won't be looking any further than etrailer for anything else our band requires. Thank you.

by:

Radial TiresI was in need of trailer tires and rims for my heavy equipment trailer. After scouring the internet I came across etrailer.com. After comparing the tires and rims they offered with other on-line vendors, etrailers quality and price beat the competition hand down so I placed my order. I was really impressed with the outstanding customer service they provided, from the placement of the order to the ongoing follow-up while the order was in transit. Once I received the order I was even more impressed with etrailer. The tires and rims where of the highest quality and have been performing far beyond my expectations. I'm definitely a happy customer who will shop with them again. Thanks etrailer!!

  • Are Tire & Wheel Combos Balanced at Factory
The wheel and tire combos we sell are not balanced at the factory. You may have the wheel/tire professionally balanced if you wish, but having perfectly balanced tires is not as important with trailer tires as it is with a passenger vehicle. I would check the seal surface on the spindle to be sure that it matches the # RG06-070 seal inner diameter of 2.250 inches. Many times mobile home axles use non- standard parts so careful measurement of all of the parts is required. If all of these dimensions match, then you will need to determine whether...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire Combo for 1994 Four Winns Boat Trailer
Although the Loadstar Wheel and Tire Combo you referenced, part # AM3S870 would work well for you, had you considered going with the radial equivalent, part # AM32664? Both the bias-ply and the radial are rated at 2,540 lbs per tire. Radial tires generally run cooler, which will lead to longer tire life. For maximum tire life, be sure to keep tires inflated to the maximum psi as recommended by the tire manufacturer, which in the case of these tires is 65psi.

  • Center Pilot Hole on 12 Inch Trailer Wheel with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern is Too Large for Hubs
All of the 12 inch wheels with 4 on 4 bolt pattern that we carry have a pilot hole that is 2.8 inches or greater. If the wheel bolts have a 60 degree cone (like # RG02-020 as an example) then the bolts will be able to center the wheel on a hub-centric set up like what you have. The 60 degree cone will center at each hole thus centering the wheel. If the bolts are flat like a regular nut, or 90 degree, like # RG02-040, then they will not be able to center the wheel properly. • Does Pilot Size Matter for 15 Inch Tire and Wheel Combo With 6 on 5-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
That's a good question although the pilot size will only matter if you are using hub-piloted wheels, which means the the wheel secures to the hub with bolts as opposed to lug nuts (lug-piloted wheel), or if the wheel itself has a smaller pilot hole than the hub. The 3-5/8 inch measurement you got is pretty common and it does sound like you are looking for a lug-piloted wheel, which is by far the most common. So for that you can absolutely use a ST225/75R15 or ST205/75R15 tire and wheel...
