Center Pilot Hole on 12 Inch Trailer Wheel with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern is Too Large for Hubs

Question:

Bought some 12inch 4x4 wheels, but the new ones have 2.84inch center holes. My old wheels and the trailer hubs are 2 1/2. The wheels are mounted by bolts, not studs and nuts so I understand I must have wheels with the right size holes. Do you sell wheels with the proper center holes for my trailer? Do you sell adapters?

Expert Reply:

All of the 12 inch wheels with 4 on 4 bolt pattern that we carry have a pilot hole that is 2.8 inches or greater. If the wheel bolts have a 60 degree cone (like # RG02-020 as an example) then the bolts will be able to center the wheel on a hub-centric set up like what you have. The 60 degree cone will center at each hole thus centering the wheel.

If the bolts are flat like a regular nut, or 90 degree, like # RG02-040, then they will not be able to center the wheel properly. We currently do not have a spacer and I wouldn't recommend one anyway because it just adds another component that could potentially cause a problem down the road.
