Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I received 5 on 5 wheels instead of 5 on 4.5 wheels, and getting them replaced has been very difficult.

Paul, I have good news! The replacements are on their way to you!

by:

Great selection and great prices. Got them in less than a week and put them on within an hour. So much better looking on my 5th wheel RV and now peace of mind. I went from a size ST205/75R15 to a ST225/75R15. They fit great! Pictures are before and after.

by:

Have ordered two of these for my 6x12 enclosed trailer. Meet all expectations. Recommend

by:

Great tires and easy to deal with.

by:

High quality tire and wheel! It was a perfect fit and now my trailer pulls smooth as butter down the road! I highly recommended this tire/wheel combo and this company!!!!

by:

I bought this for a spare, since my livestock trailer did not come with one. It was a great value and now I don’t have to worry about not having a spare.

by:

Great tire and wheel combination. Excellent value! I replaced the brakes and slipped on the new tire and wheel to complete the job. Trailer will be in great shape for many years.

by:

I would just like to say that both the ease of using your website and the incredibly efficient way in which my order was processed and shipped blew me away. I shopped on Sunday and had my wheels/tires mounted on my trailer on Wednesday. I wish every etailer was this efficient.

by:

Outstanding retailer. Products always arrive in a timely fasion. Everything I've ever purchased has been quality products.

I have a pop-up camper that was converted to a utility trailer. The old rims were very rusty and I only found out when I went to install this new Kenda tire/rim combo that the old rims were bent/warped and difficult to remove from center bore. This new Kenda tire and rim combo makes my trailer look so much better! The rubber on these tires is very grippy, which I really like! My old, dry-rotted tires felt like plastic to the touch with no grip whatsoever. I used the etrailer website to learn how to properly measure the spacing between lugs to ensure I buy the right size. Shipping came super quick and all in one box. Tires were filled to the correct psi. I could not have been happier! I've since replaced the sides of the trailer with pressure treated wood, added 2 strips of 2"x 2"x6', 1/4" thick angle iron to the underside of the 2x8x8 plank flooring and used it to haul loam and crushed rock. All went super smooth and feels great to be able to use my utility trailer again!

by:

Great fit ,excellent paint on wheels ,tires were nice looking too...thanks

by:

I googled search for trainler spare for Coleman 17B RV trailer and etrailer come up with the exact tire / rim that i needed.
Easy order and correct specifications for my Coleman 17B trailer. I received in prompt time with no issues. I matched it with my trailer and it fits perfect.
Thanks,

by:

Used them on a boat trailer for the first time today and it didn’t last 10 miles and blew one of the tires. The rim was shot as soon as o noticed. Have had them in my trailer stored until now. Maybe had them 2 months. Would not recommend these tires if they are going to blow like this. Glad the pieces of tire also runnier my boats paint! Great time! Thanks for selling trash tire and rim packages! Out $XXX and stranded on the side of the road……..

by:

Great tires for my 19’ Tahoe , I installed these tires when I picked up my boat in Gettysburg Pa and trailered it all the way to South Jersey without any issues . I used the trailer every other weekend to the Jersey shore and at this time have been great !! The one thing I do is remove the new tires during winter storage and place the old rims and tires on the trailer for storage in the winter weather to help with the life of these new ones !

  • Spare Tire in Size 225/75-15 for Trailer
For a spare that matches your tire size and wheel bolt pattern the Karrier # AM32459 would be a really great option. It's a great value wheel and tire would work great in event you needed it. Now the other issue I see that you are using a passenger vehicle tire on your trailer which isn't the safest option. You really should go with a tire that is rated for use on a trailer so that you prevent premature failure and possibly cause other issues. The Westlake tire part # LHWL304 would be...

We have numerous tire and wheel combos available, including a 15 inch by 6 inch wheel with 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. For load range D, we have 2 options. First is the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire with 15 inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D, # AM3S862. The second option is an Aluminum Wheel like the # AM22653 which you can have a bias tire like # AM1ST96 mounted or the radial tire like # TTWTRTM2257515D. Both of the tires for each tire wheel combo above is size 225/75-15...

  • Upgrading Tires and Wheels on Single Axle Travel Trailer
Your existing tires are about 8 inches wide by about 26 to 26-1/2 inches in diameter. The larger 225/75-15 would be about 1/2 inch wider and around 28 inches in diameter, which would only use 3/4 to 1 inch of the available 3-1/2 inches of clearance you mentioned.. From the clearances you mentioned, it sounds like the # AM3S862 would work well for you. This being said, I would recommend you go with a wheel/tire combo that uses a radial tire, like part # AM32459. The combo has a C load rating,...

  • Can ST205/75R15 Trailer Tires be Replaced With ST225/75R15 Trailer Tires on Grey Wolf 29TE
You can, assuming you have the proper clearance; with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. ST205/75R15 measure 27.1" in diameter and 8.1" wide, while ST225/75R15 tires measure 28.3" in diameter and 8.9" wide, so you'll only be adding about 5/8" of height and 3/8" of width near the frame rail. A quality tire with the...

  • Will 225/75-15 Trailer Tires Work To Replace 155/80-13 Trailer Tires
The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Wheel part # AM32459 is what I recommend you use to upgrade the wheels/tires on the trailer. This combo measures 28.4 Diameter x 8.9" Wide. If you have room for this larger size there would be no downside of this and more upsides than just added height such as a higher speed rating, greater weight capacity, and better tire selection. Please note, we recommend about 3-4" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender and...

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendations for a Livestock Trailer with 5 Lug Wheels and 7.00x15LT Tires
I have a solution for you, but the 7.00x 15 LT tire size you have is a light truck tire size. LT tires should not be used on trailers although some do without issue. Trailer tires are designed with a thicker sidewall that can accommodate higher air pressures and the weight of the trailer load. Trailer tires should also be inflated to their maximum pressure that is stamped on the sidewall. The trailer tires that we carry are not intended to be used at speeds over 65 miles per hour, unless...

The Kenda Karrier ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32545 that you referenced would be the same size and would technically work, but since your trailer currently has radials on it I would recommend you go with a radial instead of a bias ply tire like what this one has. For that you would want the part # AM32459. This tire is a bit more expensive but it would be your best option. It is highly recommended you use the same tire construction for all trailer tires. We have a few wheel/tire combinations that match all of the criteria you mentioned. Selecting one of the combos will depend on the type wheel you want, and load range you prefer. If you want a galvanized wheel I recommend part # AM32397. This is a Load Range C tire with a maximum load capacity of 1,820 lbs at 50 psi. For a white 8-spoke wheel I recommend part # AM32459. All of the tire and wheel combos we have in size ST225/75R15 with 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern are load range C tires rated for 2,150 pounds at 50 psi. What you could do since you need a load range E is use # AM10303 and wheel # AM20522 and have a local tire shop mount the tire to the wheel for you. We don't have any donut type spare tires. Just regular old trailer tires and wheels!

  • Can 205/75-14 be Used in Place of 205/75-14
You would easily be able to fit a 225/75-15 in place of your 205/75-14 that you have now. The 235 size is an off road size though so I wouldn't recommend going that route. So for a 225 the Karrier part # AM32459 ST225/75R15 would work really well. It has same bolt pattern as what you have now, an 81 mph speed rating and a capacity of 2,150 lb.

ST on a tire size like the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST96 you referenced indicates "special trailer" which means it was designed specifically for use in a trailer application. This type of tire can only be used on a trailer. For more info on trailer tires check out the help article I attached. There's more info on the different trailer tire constructions as well.

  • Should Larger Tires and Wheels be Used to Go Camping on the Beach with a Trailer
Ultimately you want the most surface area on sand so if you have the means to upgrade your tire/wheel size then go for it! What you need to do prior to purchasing new tires/wheels is to go out and check on your current set to see what kind of clearances you have. If you have a 225/75R15 tire mounted on your trailer wheels and they hold air the wheel is going to be a 15" wheel. It is very difficult to measure the wheel diameter accurately as the measurement is take for the bead seat area where the tire mounts. The best way to verify your wheel size is by checking for the stamped size inside the wheel itself. The width is also measured to the bead seat width.
