Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Purchased a pair to replace 4.8/4.0-8 tires on a small sailboat trailer so Galvanized rims were a must. Also plan to use the trailer for other purposes therefore D load range rating was a bonus. Mounted the wheels but haven’t had chance to use. Tires did come with metal valve stems appropriate for the 100 psi rating. Initial impression is positive.

There was a problem with the order only 1 tire/wheel arrived. Called late afternoon on a Wednesday the missing tire shipped that day and arrived Friday less than 48 hours. That’s great service! 5 stars for product and service.

These were a great upgrade from the factory tires on my waverunner trailer

by:

These tires are awesome. They fit properly and seem to be of very high quality. They are exactly what I was looking for at a great price. The website made it easy to determine the proper tire to purchase with all of the specs and dimensions for tire and rim size. I built a rack on my trailer to hold multiple boats and needed tires that could handle the extra load. The tires arrived quicker than expected as I used standard shipping. Ordering was easy and shipping was free.

@CalN We're sorry about that, thank you for the kind words. We're glad to hear you have a working tire!

by:

Exact fit and Galvanized I won’t have to worry about any rust.
I needed a load range D for my chain trencher trailer and eTrailer had them. Load range D can be a little tough to locate. Great service and shipping!

by:

Big thanks to Carol C and George J for expediting my trailer tires and galvanized rims. Very easy to navigate your website and love the shipping updates with the US map fun even for a mechanic like myself. Merry Christmas 2020.

Was exactly like I ordered

by:

Spec's meet the need for small utility trailer for load from tx to Oregon mostly on the Interstates. Tires arrived in two days as stated when completing order.

Great product. I was running 4.8-8 boat trailer tires and I wanted a higher load rating. Helen was extremely helpful with selecting. I thought about going to a 12" rim size, but decided to go with a 5.70-8. I purchased 2 of the AM30156 and they are amazing. I feel everyone should replace their 4.8-8's with these units, as long as they have enough clearance. They are slightly wider and taller so check that out. They are a much more robust product, they are a load rating D instead of B, and my trailer tires don't look grossly undersized now, even though I didn't step up to a 12" rim. The 8" galvanized rims look great. I had these bolted on my trailer within 12 hours of receiving them. Great job etrailer and Helen!

by:

The tires are great, shipped very quick ly

by:

My Kenda tires were delivered exactly when they were supposed to be delivered. They came inflated to the proper level and fit like a glove. The video. How To Measure a Bolt Pattern on a Wheel, gave me the confidence to purchase the correct tire over the internet. When the tires arrived, I changed them with the old ones and was very pleased that they installed with no issues and rode very smoothly.

This was my first ever trailer purchase and it was a great experience.

by:

tires ordered were for an EZ loader trailer. website provided excellent info enabling correct tires and wheels to be identified. all fit perfectly. am very pleased with the result. will use this company again.

by:

The tire is fine but why match a Load range D tire to a load range C rim?
This always made me wonder but I guess most customers don't check the rim load range.
Also if you want the D load range you need to put 90psi in the tire, and keep it there!

by:

Nice set of tires and rims. I have owned this utility trailer for over twenty years, it had belonged to my father-in-law. He purchased it new in 1967, except for the tires the rims were original, after 50 or so years it was time to upgrade that's why I chose the galvanized rims, the 5 bolt pattern was spot on and the trailer tracks beautifully. I have been doing business with etrailer for many years, and with any luck will continue for many more.

by:

Like the wheels, but had two problems. One had a valve stem leak before I put them on, so had to fix that, and the other had defective galvanized area where rust had formed, again prior to installation, but since it was on the inside I figure it would cover with grease. Other than that they're great!

by:

I put these on to get 5 inches more height clearance in my garage. They are built like a rock, very solid, and have held up well. I don't tow them long distances but if I even needed to I would not hesitate. I do still have the larger tires that I would probably put on if going long distances.

by:

Great product at a great price. Used these on a jet ski trailer. These galvanized wheels are a good choice for boat trailers because they resist rust much better than their powder coated counterparts. Locally, the tires alone cost as much as this combo.

by:

Absolutely a Great Experience purchasing tires from ETRAILER. These tires are now on my older jetski trailer. We purchased a newer ski, which is heavier, and the smaller 8inch tire just didn't seem right so i went with the next size up. It fit with no additional adjustments. The transaction on the phone went very smooth. I even was notified that my tires would be delivered earlier than originally thought. Thank you for a great experience.

by:

My purchase of a Kenda galvanized wheel and tire was spot on. And , is the exact match
of the existing original. Also the shipping delivery was prompt as well as etrailer getting
packaging out swiftly to the delivery carrier. (out the same day as order received)
"very good Job by all"
Thank you

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel for Tires Rubbing Against Trailer
I recommend going to a more narrow rim and tire to solve your issue with sidewall rubbing. Depending on the load range you need, there are a couple of options. I suggest taking a look at the Kenda # AM3H220, which is a 165/65-8 tire with a maximum load of 800 lbs at 70 psi and has a rim that is 8" diameter x 5-3/8" wide. You can also take a look at the Kenda # AM30156, which is a 5.70-8 tire with a maximum load of 1,075 lbs at 100 psi with a rim that is 8" diameter x 3-3/4" wide. Both...

  • Recommended Tire And Wheel Sizes To Change To For A Camper With 5.70-8 Tires
When you say blowouts and attribute them to heat buildup, you are correct. The reason you have heat buildup in tires is not just because of the size, it will also be from overloading, damage to the tires and age. So to just change size first might not solve the problem. If the tires hit curbs a lot it would cause damage to the sidewalls and form a weak spot, which would allow the heat to buildup and go to the weakest spot in the tire and fail. Also any punctures or repairs to the tires...

  • Will Kenda 5.70-8 Tire & Wheel With 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Work For Boat Trailer
Yes, for your boat trailer with 5.70-8 tires with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you can absolutely use the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM30155. The white wheels on this combo will work with a boat trailer, but I do recommend considering the same option but with galvanized wheels. Reason is, galvanized wheels are going to offer you better corrosion resistance, which can be important for boat trailers, especially if they are used quite often....

  • Smallest Tire and Wheel Combo With Load Range D Capacity
The smallest tire and wheel combination that allow load range D will have 5.70-8 tires. This tire and wheel combination will be 18.1 inches in diameter and have a 1,075 capacity at 100 psi. There are a pair of options for you which we carry depending on the wheel bolt pattern you have. The Kenda # AM30153 has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern while the Kenda 5.70-8 # AM30156 has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If you are unsure which bolt pattern you have take a look at the linked help article I've added...

  • Speed Rating for Trailer Tires and Troubleshooting a Bouncing Trailer
All of the trailer tires we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour which is suitable for highway speeds. A 4.8-12 trailer tire, like the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM10062, is rated for 90 psi. You should always inflate a trailer tire to the max psi rating indicated on the tire. Trailer tires are made with a thicker side wall to handle more vertical load. Under-inflating a trailer tire will cause excessive heat build up and cause the tire to fail. What is probably causing your trailer...

  • 5.70-8 Trailer Tire & Wheel With 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern Combo
We have a couple of options for a trailer tire and wheel combo with 5.70-8 tires and wheels that have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, it just depends on the load rating you need. The tire/wheel combos are the following: - Load Range C - 910 lbs: Loadstar 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM30150 - Load Range D - 1,075 lbs: Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM30156

  • Trailer Tire Recommendations for a Trailer Towed by a Motorcycle
An 8 inch tire is perfectly fine for a motorcycle trailer. It will probably be easier on the bike. A couple of things you mentioned do wave red flags. First, tire pressure. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the trailer tire. This is because trailer tires are specially constructed with a thicker sidewall when compared to passenger vehicle tires. When under inflated the thicker sidewall generates excessive heat and can fail. The other thing to look...

  • What is the Weight Capacity of the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel AM30156
Load Ranges for tires can and will change based on the tire size. Not all Load Range C's have the same capacity. The most important factor to consider will always be the stated capacity at the max tire pressure. The part # AM30156 that you referenced has a 1,075 lbs at 100 psi so that is it's actual capacity regardless of it being a Load Range D. The Load Ranges are basically designed to easily organize tire capacities based on size.

  • Are These Tires Strong Enough To Hold A 1,600 lb Load On A Single Axle Trailer?
Depending on how many tires you have determine if the tires will be overloaded. It's kind of like axles. If you wanted to carry a 5,000 lb piece of equipment and you have two 3,000 lb axles then you will be fine since you have a 6,000 set up. Same with tires. If you have two tires that have a capacity of 1,075 like the tire you're looking at # AM30156 and you're going to have 1,600 lbs on your trailer and the trailer itself doesn't weigh more than 450 lbs, you won't be going over the weight...

  • Do You Carry a 5.70 X 8 Radial Tire on Galvanized wheel combo?
In Tire & Wheel combos we do not have radials sized 5.70” X 8”, however we do have a 5.70” X 8” Kenda # AM30156 (8-Ply) Bias Ply on a 5-ON-4-1/2” bolt pattern, galvanized wheel. Tires are Load Range D, and have a 5 year manufacturer's warranty. We do not have any radial tires in that size. The smallest radials we carry, with wheel or not, is for 12” diameter wheels, which is way bigger than you want.

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Boat Trailer Tire & 5 on 4-1/2 Wheel be Upgraded to Larger Tire
It may be possible, depending on how much clearance you have - with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. A 4.80/4.00-8 tire measures 16.1" diameter when inflated and 4.7" wide, so if you have the clearance you can go to a 5.70-8 tire which is 18" diameter and 5.8" wide, and there are three different load ranges to choose...
