Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Bought these tires/wheels to trailer my sailboat from KY to NC (about 350 miles) with speeds between 55 and 70 mph. Had no issues and glad I got them

by:

Tires were packed in a large box, which smashed against a smaller box that had LED lights placed inside. ONCE AGAIN, your shipment department has failed to properly pack my orders. This happens EVERY TIME I place an order.

by:

I replaced golf cart tire/wheels on an offset smoker which weighs 1000lbs because the cart tires were too wide to allow easy turning. These tires have a better load rating and I can maneuver the smoker much better.
As far as quality, You only need to say Kenda and that says quality. The delivery was 3 days form order to arrival, this is outstanding. I highly recommend.

by:

These wheels were an Exact replacement for my folding utility trailer.
Your section on hole pattern measurements really helped me decide what wheel to order.

by:

Though the tire I ordered didn't quite fit (my sidecar requires a very strange size tire) the tire was shipped out early and is good quality. It is rare to find reliable companies these days but it seems this is one.

by:

I order this tire as a spare tire for my kayak trailer. I had it over a year now and it is still holding air. Tire is of excellent quanity.

by:

Everything was perfect. Fast delivery, fair price and great product that fits. I live in a very rural area so better communication about status and delivery would be helpful but no big deal - i received it! I have 3 trailers, you are my new go to source for trailer parts.

by:

It is good product and I would recommend it completely.

by:

Purchase 2 tires/wheels and they showed up on time fully inflated.

by:

I ordered wheel bearings and a spare trailer tire. Price was right, products met all expectations and delivery - ground based, cheapest option was two days after order - much faster than expected. Nice mapped delivery tracking info. Website was very intuitive, easy to use and well designed. This was a really nice ordering experience. These products for my conversion of an old 1979 model sailboat trailer to a DN iceboat trailer. Spare fits nicely into the box. I have now installed the wheel bearings.
Thanks for a perfect order shopping experience.

by:

It is exactly what I needed

by:

Made in Taiwan, must better quality than China. Great value.

by:

Best tire for the best price!!! Customer service is great

by:

by:

by:

Great price. Time will tell how the tires will hold up.

by:

I purchased these tires and wheels and mounted them on an old boat trailer with a boat, then hauled it 750 miles. Excellent service from the tires, happy with purchase! Will buy again from Etrailer.com.

by:

Great price $9 less than Walmart for trailer tire/wheel combo...
only $33 delivered compared to $43 at Walmart....I did need to buy an extra 3rd wheel to get free shipping but well worth it. Thanks

by:

It was easy to find the exact tire and wheel i needed and it was shipped faster than was promised. Arrived in good condition and a perfect fit. Could not ask for more.

by:

You guy rock! Got my old rock trailer rolling again. It is so old it had left handed lug nuts on side.

by:

Very good price! Thanks. I will be back.

by:

First of all they simply have the best selection on the internet! Their delivery was fast and efficient at a decent price. The tires and rims fit perfectly as advertised. I would definitely recommend this place again and again.

by:

Works well for a train I am making for grandkids. Will eventually have four cars. The tires hubs and spindles all worked well from etrailer

by:

  • What Replacement 4.80/4.00-8 Tires do You Recommend for My Dirt Bike Trailer?
Thanks so much for the photos! The good news is that we definitely carry the tire size of 4.80/4.00-8. That is the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range B # AM10002. However, as far as the wheel replacement, the only rims we carry that fit these sized tires have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern or a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and come with the tires already. Those are the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM30020 and the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8...

  • What is Difference Between 4.80-8 Trailer Tire and 4.80/4-8 Tire
The tire size you referenced, 4.80-8, and 4.80/4-8 tire are interchangeable. The width is just slightly different, but will fit the same size wheels. The older tire size use to be a 4.00-8, so the 4-8 is added to the tire description so that those who have the older 4.00x8 tires, which are no longer available, will know that this size is compatible with their trailer. This is the case with the Kenda Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM30000. I have linked a tire size FAQ that shows the different...

From brand to brand the Load Range of the same size will be the same, but not across all tire sizes. It's really just a way to organize the weight capacities for a given size in an easy way. • Replacement 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire for a Log Splitter
The size on Kenda K371 bias trailer tire # AM10004 would match your current tires, but the weight capacity might be a bit much for your application. The 2 P.R., or 2 ply rating, on the current tire indicates that it is a load range A, while the # AM10004 is a load range C, rated at 760 lbs at 90psi. You would need to check the side of the current tire for the actual weight rating on it. Although the # AM10004 would fit your wheel, you would have a stiffer ride on your trailer due to...

If you have a hub centric setup the pilot diameter of the wheels much match the hub's diameter exactly so that the wheel will be centered properly when installed. The DOT number code will be stamped on one side of the tire, near the bead area. This tire identification number will start with the letters DOT, then the next two numbers or letters are the plant code where the tire was manufactured. The last four numbers represent the week and year the tire was built. For example, the numbers 0410 means the fourth week of 2010. • What is Speed Rating of Trailer Tire in Size 4.80/4.00-8
If there isn't a stated speed rating for a trailer tire it's a safe bet to stick with 65 mph as the max rating. In the tire size you have of 4.80/4.00-8 all of the options we carry like the # AM10002 are rated for 65 mph and there aren't any options with a higher speed rating.

  • Speed Rating for Trailer Tires
Special trailer tires are usually rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph. If you exceed 65 mph, heat could build up in the tire and cause it to break down and fail. If a tire is rated to run at a higher speed, this information should be listed on the trailer's sidewall. Going to a different tire size will not give you the ability to exceed the 65 mile/hour speed rating.

  • Recommended Tire and Wheel Combination for Log Splitter
For your log splitter wheel and tire combination, the pilot hole in the center will be much larger than the hub center. This is not an issue as the wheel will bolt to the hub and be centered based on the lug studs and lug nuts. All trailer spindles will have the single nut holding that wheel bearing in place as you stated. If you have no lugs and only the single center nut then I don't have any wheel options available for that hub centered assembly. My recommendation is the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8...

  • Do the Tire and Wheel Combos Come Mounted and Balanced
The Tire and Wheel Combo, part # AM30000, is received from the supplier already with the tire mounted on the wheel. Trailer tire pressure ratings are different from vehicle tires. With trailer tires you want to always inflate them to the max psi rating when cold and as long as you aren't exceeding the weight capacity and speed rating any psi fluctuation will be totally fine and not need to be monitored. If you under-inflate them (sounds like you might have been) they will build heat up quickly which eventually leads to failures like blow outs. The # AM30000 should be ran at it's 60 psi rating. It...
