Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

I haven’t mounted them on my trailer but I’m concerned about quality control . Two are identical . The third seems to be narrower along the inside wall and won’t stand on its own like the other two .

Hi Gene, Thanks for your feedback! Sometimes tires will look skinnier after being stacked up in the warehouse. Once they are mounted and set at the correct air pressure it will perform as it should.

Tires on my camper have been good. I did have one blow out, but I thought the service I got to have it replaced was great. Of course I have no way of knowing what caused the blowout, but it was replaced no problem and I appreciate that. Thank you

by:

Tires came in squashed tire shop had a hard time inflating them

by:

Need a tire for my boat trailer what I can't find around, but sure enough I found it 1000 miles away. Came 1 day earlier, very happy with there service.A ++++

by:

These tires are great. I replaced the car tires that were on my utility trailer when I bought it and the trailer seems to tow much better and can now handle the weight of a load of wood much easier with the stiffer sidewalls.
Had them mounted and balanced at a local tire shop which is most likely why the trailer tows better.
I would definitely go with these again.

by:

AWESOME Tires, the only tires I use on all my personal vintage trailers as well as Client Restorations that come through our shop! Whether it is a fully restored museum piece or a trailer we are rescuing from cross country, these are the tires of our choice!!

Was notified and delivered right away

by:

Just what I ordered

by:

Tires weren’t stored very well. Looks like they had something very heavy on them for some time and deformed them. They will be very difficult to mount or might not mount at all. Getting the bead to set will be very difficult.

by:

This tire is just what I needed, I purchased my car trailer several years earlier and it did not come with a spare tire & wheel. Worried me some early on about being on the road having a vehicle on the trailer and having tire trouble especially since the tire size could be difficult to find at a lot of tire stores. I feel a lot safer now having a spare for my car trailer. Having a spare tire and wheel for my trailer, takes the worry out of being on the road miles from anyplace I could have found what I needed.

by:

Quick and easy order, fast delivery

by:

I was disappointed in the condition of the tire when it arrived. The tire was squashed down and so out of shape I had a hard time getting air in it. It was like something very heavy had sat on top for it for a long time. I hope it holds the air.

by:

This is an excellent company and product. The tires were shipped ASAP and came as ordered in a couple of days. They look "outstanding" on my 1972 camper, priced very well and with great service!!

Thank you,

John

by:

This tire came with my new trailer. It has outlasted all other brands of tires I have had on my trailers.

These tires last longer than other trailer tires I have put on my trailer. But still why do any of them have to wear out? :

by:

ordered online with no problems. delivered promptly. Good product

by:

Easy transaction

by:

Good tire for the price point. I put them on a 20 yr old trailer. The rim was really nice for the price. I blew out a tire towing my ATV back from a hunting trip, which was why I ordered the tires and rim. Rim fits my old trailer good will be ordering another.

Fast shipping. I have ordered from E trailer in the past and they are very good. I got a 20K reese 5th wheel hitch and bed rails last time. I highly recommend them . My buddy uses them also for his boat trailer parts Ed

by:

I have used dias belted tires on my 31 ft travel trailer for several years. Have never had one single problem. In fact I plan to purchase more.

by:

Ordered five trailer tires in load range D. I was excited to receive them promptly from etrailer through UPS and glad to report that etrailer was the only source that I could find to carry the desired quality of tire I was looking for. Thanks again to etrailer.com

by:

Good piece of mind to have these heavy duty tires on my car carrying tandem. I overload it to haul my little dozer and these tires are mighty.

by:

etrailer.com by far has the best customer service I have ever dealt with! As always my tires arrived just two days after I placed the order. Absolutely amazing! The value is incredible too. Best price I found and free shipping to boot! I will continue to make etrailer the first and only stop for all of my trailer needs.

by:

High quality tire. Had it mounted to the new wheel. I now have a good spare for my trailer again. Great service from etrailer as usual. Thanks!

  • Compatibility of Tire Size ST225/75R15 on Rims That Now Have Tire Size ST225/70R15
Yes, the tire size ST225/75R15 will fit just fine on your horse trailer rims that currently have tire size ST225/70R15. The width of these two tires is the same - 225 millimeters - and so is their wheel diameter of 15-inches. The difference between them is their sidewall aspect ratio, also known as their section height. This height will be greater on the ST225/75R15. Overall tire diameter for a ST225/75R15 tire will be approximately 28.4-inches while your ST225/70R15 tires' overall diameter...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tire Wear on Outer Tread
The first and easiest thing to check is to make sure the tire is inflated properly. If the tire is under-inflated, the sides of the tire tread will wear quickly. The recommended psi should be listed on the sidewall of the tire. It is odd that your tire is wearing on the outer portion of the tread. When abnormal tire wear is a problem, it is more common on the center tread or inner tread caused by over inflation and overloading. If your tires are inflated properly or you continue to have...

  • What Size Rims Will A 225/75/15 Tire Fit?
Hey Richard, I can clear this up for you since it gets confusing when talking about tire and rim sizes. It really depends on the tire because there is no standard when it comes to specific tire sizes. For example, the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial # LHWL304 fits 15" x 5" and 15" x 6" rims, while the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias # AM1ST96 is the same size tire but it actually fits 15" x 6", 15" x 6-1/2", and 15" x 7" rims. If you have a specific tire in mind, let me know and I'd be happy to do...

  • Can 235/80-16 Size Tire with 80 psi on Sidewall be Run at 70 psi Instead
When it comes to trailer tires you always need to have them filled to the psi rating found on the sidewall. Your 235/80-16 size tire, like part # LHWL401 on our site, has been tested for the specific weight capacity and speed rating at 80 psi and anything that is higher or lower will mean that the weight capacity and speed ratings are unknown. This can result in blowouts and premature wear on your tires. Unless Les Schwab has a special reason, and they have verified from the manufacturer...

  • Can 6-Ply Tires Be Used On Travel Trailer With 8-Ply Tires
You will always want to use tires that have a capacity that is best suited for your trailer. It is always recommended to use tires that are the same size, have the same load range and construction on a trailer. If tires that are not matched, you could have problems like overheating and overloading which can lead to tire failure. You always want to make sure you inflate the tires when cold to the maximum psi for the best performance. I have attached a helpful article about tires and...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tires Wearing Out on the Outside Treads
The wear is going to be the same with a bias tire or with a radial tire so changing out the style will not help with what is causing the wear. If the tires were over inflated, the center treads would wear. Under inflated tires would show wear on the inside and outside treads. If the wear is just on the outside then the tire is riding at a slight angle with the bottom pointed more in toward the trailer than the top. You will need to check the suspension components, axles, spindles, to make...

  • How to Determine the Date a Trailer Tire was Manufactured
To determine the date any trailer tire was made, including the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST96 you only need to find the date code. There will be a four-digit code on the sidewall of the tire and the first two numbers are the week of the year it was made and the last two will be the year. For example if you see a code that reads 2918 that means the tire was made in the 29th week of 2018. That said, tires do not wear out from age for anywhere from five to seven years...

  • How Do Trailer Tire Weight Capacities Work
Tires like the part # AM1ST96 that have a 2,540 lbs at 65 psi are rated per tire. So if you had a tandem axle trailer you would multiply 2,540 by 4 to get the total trailer tire capacity that you would have. You should note that to get the full capacity of the tire it will need to be inflated to it's max psi rating.

  • Recommendation About Mixing Bias-Ply and Radial Tires on Trailer
Due to their differing ride characteristics and construction, bias-ply and radial tires should NOT be mixed, unless you're talking about a short term-short distance situation. Bias-ply tires have sidewalls that are thicker and less flexible, so mixing the tires could have an adverse effect of the stability and handling of your trailer. I'd highly recommend going either with all bias-ply or all radials. Radials would provide a smoother ride and shed heat better when under load. Since excessive...

  • Will Higher Temperatures In a Desert Affect Maximum Tire Pressure in Trailer Tires
Regarding tire inflation, trailer tires are built to withstand a lot of abuse. Lower air pressure is more of a problem than higher air pressure. A trailer tire can handle being slightly over-inflated better than being under-inflated, especially if the trailer that the tires are on is loaded to the maximum. The rule of thumb on tire pressure change due to air temperature is 1 psi for every 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) in temperature change. In most parts of the United States the difference between...

  • What is the Speed Rating of Kenda ST225/75-15 Trailer Tires and are Radials Rated for Higher Speeds
The trailer tires that we carry including # AM1ST96 are rated for up to 65 miles per hour. Bias ply tires and radials are rated the same. If anything a radial would have a higher speed rating because they track better and run cooler than bias ply tires. But it doesn't matter in this case because both types are rated for a maximum of 65 miles per hour.

Even if your bias and radial tires are the same size, like 225/75-15 parts # AM1ST96 and # TTWTRTM2257515D, bias and radial tires track differently so you will get uneven tread wear plus they have slightly different builds with bias tires having a stiffer sidewall while radials are built with more flexible sidewalls. This can also cause weird tread wear on your tires. It is always best to use the same exact tire for every position on your trailer including the spare.

Good question; the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM1ST96 is a tubeless tire, and that is the norm for trailer tires now. Bias tires don't require a tube, and even though some people still use them, we do not recommend it because it can cause the tire to overheat if towed at any type of speed. It's not uncommon for what you are experiencing to be related to axle alignment issues or even a bent axle.
