Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I would not recommend these tires to anybody! I bought four of them for my boat trailer, mounted on galvanized spoke rims, and in less than 5000 miles of use, two of the four failed. They were balanced, maintained at 65# pressure, never driven over 63 MPH, and considerably oversized for the load being carried. Both tires suffered internal cord separation and went out of round, with "wiggley" tread. Fortunately I discovered both problems before blowouts. The one tire ordered here was a replacement for the first failure, and before I figured out the tire design is faulty. No longer trusting these tires, I got rid of all of them after 5K miles, and replaced them with Goodyear Endurance trailer tires, made in the USA! So far, under same use, no problems at all.

Disclaimer - I have no tire company affiliation whatsoever.

by:

Ordering was simple with solid choices. Shipment was quick with excellent tracking details. Packaging was very good. Very pleased with the level of service.

by:

So far so good. Just finished restoration and still waiting to put these tires down on the open road. Gotta say, they look good.

by:

Looks good, well made. Just received them. Will see when mounted to my camper!!!

by:

I haven't mounted them yet, but they look like a quality tire. FAST service !

HAVE LIKED ALL MY TRANSACTION'S WITH E-TRAILER. NO PROBLEM'S AND HANDLED IN A TIMELY MANNER.

by:

This is the second set of this brand tire I have purchased for our enclosed trailer, The original set was great and never had the first problem out of them, Only replaced them as they were 10 years old and feel better with a new set as we travel long distances pulling classic cars. E Trailer had them in stock and Jessica was very knowledgeable and the order arrived in a few days.

by:

Ms paula thank u so much 4 all ur help with my new trailer tires it allways good to b able to talk to i live person 4 help when u need it .

by:

Good looking tire. And Kenda is a name you can trust. Especially if you are needing a good quality tire for an affordable price.

by:

Great quality tire at a good price and it arrived quickly.

by:

We bought tires for our 2005 camper. Purchasing was easy and delivery was fast. Thank you for a great purchase.

by:

Great price for a great tire. I bought these to put on my equipment trailer that was in need of some new tires. These were the wright choice in tires for me. They have held up very well without any issues. Would highly recommend these tires if you need a great heavy duty tire.

They are still doing great. Use the trailer there on quite often to haul lumber, tractor and vehicles on it. Do love them and they are holding up well.

by:

Shipping was very good with each tire in separate box. I have not installed these yet. The tires look to be very high quality as I have used this brand and size on two trailers. over the past 10 years, a six wheel Avion Travel Trailer and a four wheel Featherlite 25 ft enclosed car hauler.

On my last order about a year ago, I ordered four with the white spoke wheel. Two balanced OK but two different shops could only balance with an excess number of weights. I have the original Featherlite wheels in storage. I am going to install these tires on the original wheels to see if the problem is in the wheels or tires. These tires look very rugged and high quality, so I suspect the problem was the center hole in the wheels causing imbalance from the balance machine.

The four tires and white spoke wheels I bought in 2012 balanced excellently with very small weights. Those 2012 tires will go on the Avion travel trailer set up permanently at a campground. They still look very good with no weather checking, and will replace really old tires that are on the Avion.

I am installing the new tires on the Featherlite enclosed 25 ft for highway safety, but I want them to balance well. I plan to carry a lot of sensitive electronics and tools and I want the trailer to ride smoothly.

I have always been impressed with e-trailer.com so I am still rating this company and these Kenda tires 5 stars.

by:

After installing our new Kenda Karrier Radial Tires we have traveled 7500 miles and they are doing great. The wear is very even across all four tires.
I would purchase them again.

by:

I ordered this product and then was notified it was late coming in and could be a week late. Etrailer sent me a email telling me the tire was going to be late. I was really worried, because I was needing the tire ASAP for my trip.
Within two days after I saw the tire was shipped, it was at my front door.

I have order products from Etrailer before and have always had a good experience. This was terrific, because it got her in time for me to get it placed on my rim and ready for my trip.

Thanks Etrailer!

by:

Great tires, customer service, and I got them promptly.

by:

They were delivered in 3 days. Had to wait on one a day or two.

Doing well.

by:

This place is great. Chris was a huge help figuring out what I needed for my vintage camper. Wheels tires and baby moon caps all fit and work perfectly. Thanx!

by:

Good looking and better tires than the factory tires that came with my RV

by:

To date I have had no problems. I like tread pattern. It is used on my dump trailer.

by:

Customer service was excellent. Tires arrived boxed separately and on time.
Tires were mounted in preparation for a trip. Too soon to evaluate tires.

by:

I just received and installed these tires on 2 different trailers, so haven't used them enough to warrant a review. They arrived in great shape, and I will write a review later in the year after i've used them a while.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for and shipping was detailed and on time delivery. Will always buy with trailer first.

by:

I just received and installed these tires, so cannot give product review other than they arrived quickly from Etrailer. I will write additional review after a few thousand miles.

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 205/75-15 be Replaced with Tire Size 225/75R15
Yes, the two tire sizes you mentioned are so close in size that you can easily replace the tire size 205/75R15 with the size 225/75R15 like the part # AM10256 that you referenced. In this tire size my favorite option is the Karrier tire part # AM10303 which has a speed rating of 81 mph, a higher weight capacity at 2,830 lbs at 80 psi and comes with a1 year warranty.

  • How to Fill Tires on Trailer that Have Different PSI Maximums
Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi that is listed on their sidewalls. Because their load capacity is based on the them being filled to their maximum psi, under-inflating a tire will essentially reduce its capacity to an unknown rating. For the time being, I recommend filling each tire on your trailer to its specific maximum psi as listed. With that being said, it sounds like you have tires of the same size but of different load ratings on your trailer. I highly...

  • Can a 205/75-14 Size Tire Replace a 205/70-14 Size Tire
As long as the 205/70-14 tires still have plenty of space between them and the fenders you an upgrade to a 205/75-14 tire like part # AM10256. The larger tire is the same width but it's about 3/4 of an inch larger in diameter so you need to make sure you'll still have at least 3 to 4 inches between the tire's tread and the underside of the fenders.

  • Available Options for Load Range D 225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire on 5 on 4-1/2 Aluminum Wheels
You are correct, as far as tire and wheel combos that come pre-mounted with a load range D 225/75-15 radial tire on aluminum wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, we don't have any. A larger selection can be found with the more common 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern for the 225/75-15 tire/wheel assemblies. Keep in mind that nitrogen filled tires can be topped off or filled with regular air if that's what you prefer. Although, nitrogen does maintain tire pressure much longer than standard...

  • Can I Use a Non-Matching Size Tire as a Spare
Unfortunately a 7.00x15 tire is going to be about 1" larger in diameter compared to a ST225/75r15 tire, and you really can't run tires of 2 different sizes without creating issues that will surface with long term use; namely uneven tire wear and the potential for another blowout. You could potentially get away with this as a spare tire as long as it's only used to get yourself from the point of malfunction to the nearest tire shop but you would want to make sure that the capacity of the...

  • Trailer Tires are Wearing on the Inside and Outside Tread and Not the Middle
It actually sounds like the tires were under inflated. This would make the middles of the tires more sunk in so the wear would be on the inside and outside tread. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. Also if the tires were overloaded and caused to flatten out some that could also be a related issue. If you could tell me the capacity of the trailer tires and the gross trailer weight it will be easy to determine if the tires were overloaded....

  • Replacement for Existing 8.55 - 15 load range B Trailer Tires
The modern equivalent size to 8.55-15 would be 225/75-15. For highway use, I'd recommend going with a radial tire for its better ride quality and its better ability to shed excess heat. For a radial tire, I'd recommend the Kenda Karrier 225/75-15 Load Range D tire, part # AM10256. The tire has a 2540 lb per tire capacity. If you won't be running the trailer on the highway much, a less expensive bias-ply tire like part # AM1ST96 would work great for you. I've linked to product videos...

The Load Range E versions are Taskmaster # TR225LRE and Karrier # AM10303. So essentially it's two brands of tires that have the same size available in different Load Ranges or weight capacities. Only catch is that this tire is a Load Range C instead of D. The capacity for the tire is all that really matters so it could still work for you as long as it's 2,050 lbs at 75 psi capacity is adequate for your setup. • Replacing Grease Trailer Hubs with Oil Bath Hubs
You can convert some hubs from grease to oil bath using a kit such as # XLPROLUBE1980KIT but for others it would not be possible without changing the hubs. This is because oil bath hubs use an oil cap that threads onto the end of the hub. Most regular hubs are not threaded so you would not be able to screw on an oil cap. If you can tell me the inner and outer bearing numbers on your existing hubs I can determine if there is a way to replace them with an oil bath system.

These tires have a 2150-lb capacity (per tire), so as long as your trailer's GVWR is less than 4300-lbs these would work well. I spoke with our resident tire expert and he said that a 225/75-15 tire like # AM10256 will fit on a 15 x 7 inch wheel. However, he added that on a trailer, you do not often see a 15 x 7 inch wheel. That is because for trailer use, you would want to keep it more narrow. Otherwise the sidewalls can bow out more.
