Passenger's-side electric brake measures 12" x 2". Brake pads are made of durable friction material for improved braking and longevity. E-coated backing plate resists rust. Fits 14-1/2", 15", 16", and 16-1/2" wheels.

Features:

  • Electric brakes are easier to install and offer more user control than hydraulic brakes
    • Requires only an electric brake controller (sold separately) - no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gear allows for a more precise setting
  • E-coated backing plate resists wear and corrosion
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assembly and off of the shoes
  • Mounting bolts and hardware (BRKH12S) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Specs:

  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO

Manual-Adjust Brake

With repeated use of this brake assembly, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assembly performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

This brake assembly should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brake. To adjust the brake, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assembly. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Works great and easy to install

by:

Arrived just when I needed them! Fairly easy to install on our horse trailer and worked without a hassle. Even with 2nd day shipping, was a much cheaper option to local alternatives. Did not take a pic after they were installed, but they arrived looking just like the picture on the site.

by:

Excellent choice. I am very happy with my order. My trailer was done in no time. Brakes I ordered fit perfectly. Now it's done and I am happy and so as everyone on the road. Thanks etrailer.

by:

They were exactly what was described, easy installation and hook up. Customer service was excellent as well, one of the backing plates got damaged through shipping. I notified etrailer right away and they had a new one shipped out the same day with no additional cost.

Great service and seems to be a quality product.

Excellent---- Web site is easy to navigate & has informative pages.
Prices continue to beat my local trailer sales.
Even though etrailer is on east coast & i'm located in mid west, I get deliveries in 2-3 days.
Parts are packaged well & have always shown up in excellent condition.

Still on my 5th wheel and holding up as expected. Great price on these.

These brakes are excellent. I have had zero issues with them since the day they were installed.

NOTE: On average I haul around 8K lbs and also not often so take my review with a grain of salt. Sometimes the load is heavy (a front end loader) and other times it's not (trash run). Either scenario, no issues. A quick gain adjustment and brake check and I'm gone. I checked the bearing play after a week or so and around the 8 month mark. Both times were A+. I think I'm 17 months into ownership. They're still working flawlessly.

When new, these drums had little OOR (out-of-round) which surprised me. Most drums have some sort of noticeable OOR. These no so much. My trailer stops quietly and effortlessly now. No pulsation, skipping, tugging, etc.

Would I buy these again? ABSOLUTELY!!

I ordered 4 non-self adjusting brake sets and recieved 2 self adjusting right sides and 2 non-self adjusting left sides. I needed the project to be complete and I installed them. When i tok the out of the boxs, there was some rebuilding as things were out of alignment from shipping. Initial adjustments on both sets was a little more time consuming because of the lack of large adjustments, but once set they are great. The electrical hook ups were easy. They stop my 5000+lb camp trailer just fine. Finally, hardware being purchased separately is annoying. They should be packaged together and the hardware should be free with purchase of the brake sets.

by:

Installed all 4 brakes on 5th wheel trailer with slight adjustments worked great on 400 mile trip through the mountain's. Had to turn down brake controller voltage after the first 200 miles because brakes were working better than manufacturer brakes.

by:

When installing this brake kit be careful with the wires. The left side is prone to pinch the wires due to where they go through the backing plate. I had my son in law helping me. He pinched one and I pinched the other between the axle plate and the back plate. Had to put heat shrink over the damaged insulation. But, the brakes work great.

They are a very good deal for the money!

SERVICE WAS GREAT

by:

Simple to install. Exact replacement for my '95 Sundowner Horse Trailer which is 5k lbs empty.
Still plenty of pad left after a year.
Powerful. Now my Truck stops better with the trailer attached!

by:

Very good bang for the buck, makes it not worthwhile to put parts or shoes on an old assembly. After the shoes seated in, i readjusted and they have been great. One note is that it does not include the fasteners to hold the assembly to the axle, so you will either need to reuse yours (mine were rusted to h*ll and back) or plan to make a trip to the hardware store.

by:

Brake assembly is a perfect fit and reasonably priced. Provides a good way to change out the brake assembly. It would be good to include a set of wire splice connectors to complete the kit.

by:

These were a perfect replacement on our dump trailer at a much more reasonable price. I didn't see any difference in quality between these and assemblies at double the cost. Next time I need trailer parts I will probably shop around, (that's just what I do) then go to etrailer.com to buy.

by:

It fit perfectly and since it was a complete assembly you didn't have to mess around with replacing brake shoes or the magnets. Plus, it was cheaper than replacing the individual parts.

by:

Brakes came in quick. 3 days I believe. Work great. They were replacements for my 25 ft gooseneck that I haul hay with. Only thing that would make them better is if they came with no butt connectors for the wiring.

by:

One of four brake assemblies was damaged in shipment. A replacement was shipped immediately after a pleasant conversation with customer service. The replacement came quickly and returning the damaged assembly was as easy as it could be with the provided return label and the box from the replacement unit. I've installed the other three at this point, with no trouble.

by:

  • Will 12 Inch etrailer.com Brake Assemblies fit a Gulfstream Kingsport Trailer
As long as the brake assemblies on your current trailer are 12 inches in diameter and use a 5 bolt pattern for mounting to the spindle the part # AKEBRK-6R is going to fit. Most likely that is what you have since trailer brake assemblies are typically all made to same industry standard specs and dimension in the weight range you have. I attached a review video for these assemblies for you to check out as well.

  • How Does Electric Trailer Brake Assembly Get Wired To Trailer?
I would be happy to help! Electric Trailer Brakes like the # AKEBRK-6R you were looking at are pretty easy to wire to your trailer. On the back of the brake assembly there is two wires that go to the brake magnet. Pick one of the wires and ground it to the frame of your trailer by adding a ring terminal # DW05737-1 and a self tapping screw. If the wire is not long enough to reach the frame then you will need to add a piece of # 16-1-1. The other wire going to the brake magnet will need...

  • Can I Install Brake Assemblies Upside Down
We do not have any replacement 12" braking assemblies like part # AKEBRK-6R that have the back plate reversed or upside down. They are designed to have the brake magnet below the axle not above it so I cannot recommend installing them upside down or somehow reversing the backing plate. Axles have a bow in them that is designed to straighten out under weight. If the bow is orientated downwards then it could be negatively affecting the weight capacity of the trailer. I'd be happy to make some recommendations for you. The Timbren # ASR35HDS02 Axle-Less Suspension would be a good choice for the teardrop-style trailer you're building. Mechanically speaking, this a much simpler way to go versus using a typical beam-type axle and leaf springs or a torsion axle. The spindles used are compatible with a 12 inch hub/drum that uses a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern which is ideal for the off-road trailer tires that the system is designed to use. For the compatible...

That would equate to using 2 sets of Timbren Axle-Less systems rated for 5,200 pounds for a total capacity of 10,400 pounds. We have a couple of options in this capacity: # ASR5200S01 has regular spindles; no rise or drop, and # ASR5200S04 has a 4 inch drop spindle meaning that it will lower the trailer by 4 inches.
