Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Dexter 12 1/4 inch by 2 1/2 inch left-hand, driver's side self-adjusting electric trailer brake assembly for 8,000 pound axles. Now, electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically, they'll require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website.

You don't have to worry about any brake actuator or hydraulic lines. Now, this assembly is a self-adjusting brake. Want to zoom, get you a closer shot. And the way you can tell it is a self-adjusting brake is if you look at this cable that goes around this wheel, attaches to the lever down here, that'll automatically adjust the adjuster here as you use the brakes. Now, self-adjusting brakes will automatically adjust to deliver optimum performance and braking power.

There's no need for manual brake adjustments. All you have to do is when you install this initially is set the brake, adjust it then. And then from then on, as you use the brakes, this cable connected to this lever will automatically and properly adjust your brakes. Proper adjustment will lead to better brake efficiency and less wear on your tow vehicle's brakes. Now, the brake shoes themselves, if you noticed these are lined with an automotive grade friction material.

That friction material is fully bonded to the shoe, it's not riveted. Gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. Now, this is for a 12 1/4 inch by 2 1/2 inch driver's side electric trailer brake assembly. And when we say driver's side or left-hand assembly, the way you can tell that is now, on new ones, you'll have a label, of course, so that'll tell you. But the way to look at, the way to tell if it's left or right side is if there's no label on it, you look at the length of the pad that's on the shoe.

So, the pad on this shoe goes from here all the way to here. And if you look out on this one, it goes from here all the way to here. This one's a longer pad. This one's the shorter pad. The shorter pad is your primary shoe, and your primary shoe will always face the front of the trailer. So, when this is installed, you know it's gonna go this way. So, that's telling you that it's a left side or driver's side assembly. Now, the mounting hardware to install this is not included. We do sell that separately on our website. And if you notice, this does have the four hole. So, it's designed for a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of four bolts. And this part is made in the USA. Again, the application on this is most standard hub and drum assemblies, including Dexter and Lippert. We've mentioned it fits 8,000 pound axles. Now, the dimension we talked about is 12 1/4 inches, and that's actually the diameter. And you can measure that from measuring this to this side of the shoe to this side of the shoe. Now, I have a ruler here, it's a 13 inch ruler. So, just to give you an idea, if we go from this end to this end, you can pretty much see that it is right at 12 1/2 inches. That's the diameter. The 2 1/2 inches we've mentioned would be the width. So, if we measure the width of the shoe is gonna be right at 2 1/2 inches. This is designed to be used with 12 1/4 inch diameter brake drums. This will fit 15 inch and larger wheels. And one last thing I do wanna mention, if you noticed they do have the two wires. These electric brakes do require that these two wires be connected. One goes to a ground, the other goes to the brake feed for power, and you can use either wire for either function.
