7 pin connector separated from cable.
I
was expecting that "Molded Cable" meant that the connector was fused to the cable insulation but instead, the two separated almost immediately after I installed it. It still works fine as the wires are connected securely inside the connector but with the outer covering pulled out like this, I don't think it will last very long.

Çable good but after putting new 7way plug on truck cable wire colors did not match etrailers picture

I know that the Hopkins harness wires are as follows for function: White Wire - Ground, Red Wire - Left Turn and Brake, Brown Wire - Right Turn and Brake, Green Wire -Tail Lights, Blue Wire -Brake Power, Black Wire -12 volt hot lead, Yellow Wire -Aux.. They will not necessarily match the trailer for color; you will want to match them for function. If the colors are not as they are stated here please let me know.

I installed this Hopkins connector cable on my 2003 Jayco 12 Sd popup camper because I replaced hydraulic brakes on it with the electric brakes. Needed some extra wires. Four were not enough to operate the lights and electric brakes. Installation was quick. I had to match wires on the trailer with cable wires. Cable looks great and so far it works great. We just checked out on our first camping trip this year.

by:

Very simple and well made. It’s a lot better than wadding up the cord and stuffing it in the fifth wheel hitch.

by:

Quality plug connector, works well and I'm sure will last a long time.

Still working well, no issues, seems to be very high quality.

Easy plug in and use as advertised

The outer sheath for the pigtail has pulled away from the plug, exposing the wires inside. I fear the wiring will soon pull from the connections inside the plug. Im always careful to pull the plug out by the plug itself.

by:

Arrived in a timely fashion, easy installation and worked well.

by:

I bought a used trailer and it needed the cable replaced. The new cable is working great

by:

My wire harness was easy to install, looked great and performed great. One year later and it still looks and performs great! I definitely recommend to anyone building their own trailer or are looking to upgrade to better wiring! My homemade trailer was a great success, thanks to etrailer.com!

by:

I am replacing the trailer connection wiring harness as part of the brake system. My 5th wheel trailer is now 10 years old so this is a preventive maintenance step in the process. Hopefully with new wheel/brake parts my trailer brakes will work better.
Thanks ETrailer.com and Rebecca for great support.

by:

Had some real issues with this one. Should have noticed when purchasing this harness is not wired using standard truck/trailer color format. Other than that it went together fairly nice. If the connector would come apart I was thinking of fixing the wiring my self.

by:

Well built and plenty of length for wiring to my junction box.

by: 11/30/2023

Part enabled installation to be complet ed.

by:

Pros: Best wire gauge in a 7 pin connector I could find.

Cons: reverse lights (red), left turn (yellow), right turn (green), and running light (brown) and not wired correctly in the plug for their respective wire colors.

I bought this for a sealed plug with good gauge wire to help save some time. What I got was a total headache trying to find out the problem of why it was not working correctly. This might not have been so bad had it not been on a new to me truck that I was not so trusting of the wiring in it. So I wound up looking at the truck first not thinking the plug would be wired incorrectly.

Be warned.

by:

It was just like the one that I was replacing. I cut a corner to sharp while turning and pinched the cable that came with my Keystone RV. Like for like.

by:

Part of brake wiring assembly. I followed etrailer's wiring diagram.

by:

Thanks for your help with parts for my trailer build. My wife and I are still making custom cabinets out of curly maple. We hope to finish this winter. We have taken it out 7 times this season. Thanks again.

by:

Exactly what I ordered. Prompt delivery and notifications!

by:

Exactly like described - great job.

by:

These folks are Top Notch, they kept me updated on my part, and followed up after delivery. Not to forget, my trailer side wiring harness, is solid and I fully expect no issues when I install it. Thank you!!

by:

This has been a great replacement harness and was easy to install.

by:

exact replacement made the repair easy.

by:

I had to get a longer pigtail for my fifth wheel since the stock one kept pulling the plug and breaking the flap on hard left turns. This pigtail solved the issue and has worked flawlessly on my Ram 3500 since installation.

P.S. E-Trailer saved my bacon when I broke two of four leaf springs on a trip from WA state to TX last winter. I hobbled into a nice RV park in El Paso TX and proceeded to call e-trailer. The gal on the other end made sure I had the right springs and hardware to replace all four leaf springs (overnighted $$$) and did her best to get them to me as fast as possible. They did not have the exact replacements so I opted for the spring that had the extra leaf, which probably should have been the correct one to begin with. I went to the local hardware store to get a few tools I didn't have on my truck (puller, torque wrench and plastic hammer) so I could finish the job. I replaced all four leafs in the RV park and was back on the road in three days from the time they broke. The replacement springs are far better and smoother than the original ones and lifted the fifth wheel about a half inch, which made it completely level. I'm totally happy with E-trailer and would HIGHLY recommend that they be the first call when you need anything for your travel needs. She also called me back several times to make sure I was doing OK...where do you get that service these days? Jim S.

by:

This trailer was built from scratch using only the metal frame. I purchased some items from etrailer an was very satisfied with the products.

by:

Worked perfectly. I like the extra length compared to the original cable.

  • What are Two Standard 7-Way Wiring Color Diagrams
For trailer 7-ways there are two wiring color standards that are commonly seen. I attached a picture that shows the difference. Typically red and black are not interchanged though. Sometimes red and yellow are for left turn/stop signal. That said not all people will use standard trailer wiring colors so you might have non standard colors used.

The Hopkins 7-way Trailer Connector # H20046 does not include instructions however all you'll really need to know is the wire function by color on the harness: White - Ground Red - Left turn and brake Brown - Right turn and brake Green - Tail Blue - Brake power Black - 12 Volt Yellow - Aux I've attached a help article on wiring for you. You'll want to wire the harness by function instead of just matching the colors since your trailer very well may be different. I've also attached a...

  • Mounting Two Trailer Stop, Turn and Marker Lights on Each Side of a Trailer
If you are using two stop/turn/marker lights on each side of the trailer, the only signal you will be able to separate out is the taillight signal. Trailers in the United States use a combined stop and turn signal so you would not be able to separate them to wire one light turn and marker and the other light brake and marker or brake turn and marker. You would essentially have two options. One light on each side stop/turn/tail and the other taillight only, or one light stop/turn only and...

  • How to Test the Functions of Trailer Tail Light Circuits
The easiest way to test the functions of the taillight wiring on a trailer is to use a jumper wire. You will touch one end of the jumper wire to the positive post of a 12 volt vehicle battery and then touch the other end of the wire to all of the different wires to see what circuits illuminate. The other option would be to trace the wires back to see where they terminate.

  • What is the Function of the Yellow/Brown Wire on a Trailer
Your yellow/brown wire most likely ties into the brown running light wire. Typically, when a trailer has a green/brown wire and a yellow/brown wire, they are both used for the running light circuit. The green/brown wire is ran down the right side of the trailer and the yellow/brown wire is ran down the left side of the trailer for the tail lights and marker lights. This prevents the need from running jumper wires across the trailer for the running lights. If your trailer is setup this way,...

  • Identifying Trailer Wire Colors and Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Not Functioning
I can help you identify the wire functions of the kit you have. The yellow wire is left turn/stop, the green is right turn/stop, the yellow and brown is left side running light circuit and the brown and green is right side running light circuit. You didn't mention a white wire though which is a very important circuit. That is the ground circuit and without it being connected to a clean metal surface on the trailer frame none of the circuits will function.

  • Gooseneck Trailer Lights Get Brighter on One Side and Marker Lights Come on with Brake Lights
Checking the grounds was a good place to start. I think that it still may be a ground issue. There are several things you can check to determine if it is a ground problem. I would start with the trailer side connector and check for any dirt or corrosion and clean it out. Dirt and corrosion could cause a bad connection or a short which would lead to undesired results. Next, I would check the ground coming out of the back of the trailer connector. It should be connected to a clean and corrosion-free...

  • Will Trailer Lighting Circuit Still Work with 7-Way if Brake Controller isn't Used
Yes, the lighting functions of a trailer 7-way will be fully functional regardless of if a brake controller is installed/functional. The circuits are totally separate. There are many people who use 7-way trailer wiring setups without a brake controller and lighting all works fine.

  • Troubleshooting Running Lights Not Working on New 5th Wheel Trailer With Headlights On
When the headlights being switched on cause other lighting functions to quit working we have found this to either be the result of a bad ground or too many lights on the trailer. Since it sounds like you have had a normal towing experience until recently it is probably a bad ground. Start off by verifying that both your tow vehicle and 5th wheel trailer connectors are clean and free of any corrosion or debris. Once those are clean we can move on to finding the issue with the ground but...

  • Wiring Up Trailer 7-Way that Uses Non-Standard Wiring Colors
Unfortunately not all people will use the standard wiring colors when wiring up a trailer connector. This happens pretty frequently and the solution is to first determine what the wiring is and then wire by function according to the attached diagram. So to do this on a trailer you have to take a jumper wire from a 12 volt battery positive post and apply voltage to all of the pins to see what they activate. You might graze the pins first as the ground circuit will spark. Most likely this...

As long as all of the trailer lighting functions are active on your trailer and the brake controller is functioning like it should then you can tape up the extra wire and not use it. It almost sounds like it could be for a third brake light for a camper shell as older Chevy trucks sometimes had a circuit for that pre-ran.

But you can also check the current grounds for the lights to make sure they are making a solid connection to a clean metal surface. When the vehicle headlights and trailer running lights...

  • Converting 5-Way Trailer Connector to 7-Way for 12V Power
The reason you aren't finding anything is because a standard 6-way or 7-way trailer connector moves to the round style like what you have on your truck. What you need to do is swap out your 5-way flat with a 7-way trailer connector like the # H20046. You will match up your existing connections with those on the new 7-way and then connect the 12V power running from your battery. Make sure you match the functions and don't just match colors since they aren't always the same. See the chart...

Yes, the center pin on trailer side wiring harness # H20046 is for reverse lights on the trailer. For this particular harness it is the yellow wire. • Function of Brown Wire on 7-Way on Homemade Flatbed Trailer
Even on manufactured trailers wiring colors can vary so there is no way to say for sure. The only way to know which wire is tied to which function is to trace the wire back. On an SAE standard 7-way the brown wire would be the tail/running lights. On an RV standard it would be the right turn/brake light. Since it is a homemade trailer it could be anything. I recommend tracing the other wires back, not just the brown wire, to see what they are connected to just to make sure you wire it correctly.

You're almost there! What you're describing is known as a wishbone harness. The running lamp circuit is split with one leg running down the driver side, the other running down the passenger.
