Comparing Dutton-Lainson Single Speed and Two Speed with Hand Brake Winches

Question:

What is the difference between this and the two speed dl with the hand brake. Which would be Bette for attaching to a trailer to load non running vehicles onto the trailer. I like the thought of a manual version and not needing an electric winch or battery to run it.

The main differences between the Dutton-Lainson winches you referenced is that # DL14881 has a hand brake, a drum hub diameter of 1-5/16 inches, and two speeds. The # DL24844 winch is a single speed and has a drum hub diameter of 3-1/8 inches. Because of the lower gear ratios # DL14881 offers, the load would be able to be drawn in quicker than with the gear ratio of # DL24844. The two speed winch would allow you to be able to change the gear ratio for loads of different weights. The handle on the single speed winch # DL24844 measures 12-1/4 inch. On the two speed winch # DL14881, the handle measures 9-1/2 inches.

Either winch will work for loading vehicles. The hand brake will provide you with a bit more control when drawing in and letting out your cable.
