How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Well made and sturdy. Cranked the jack to fully extend the tube and noticed that during the entire mid-range of extension the cranking was very stiff. It was much easier near the limits (fully retracted and fully extended). Hope this doesn't become a problem under load.

by:

Using the "Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack - Sidewind - 13" Lift - 3,000 lbs" in combination wth the
"Drop Leg for etrailer & Ram Jacks - 13-1/4" Tall - 5-1/4" Diameter Footplate" allows me to run this jack, without the drop leg attached, flush with my trailer frame for better off road clearance, and with the drop leg while taking the trailer off the vehicle, minimizes turning of the jack.

by:

This jack works much better than the poor quality original one from china. It gives you more ground clearance and is strong enough to pick up the trailer.

by:

GREAT JACK TO WORK WITH, I RETROFIT IT FOR MY RESTORED VINTAGE TRAILER. WHAT A IMPROVMENT OVER THE ORIGINAL HADCO STRIPPED OUT JACK, WELL AFTER ALL THE ORIGINAL WORKED FOR OVER 40 YEARS IT SERVED ITS TIME.

STILL WORKING GREAT... WHEN EVER I MAY NEED ANOTHER REPLACEMENTS FOR ONE OF MY TRAILERS THIS WILL BE THE ONE I WILL REPLACE WITH ONLY REGRET IS THAT I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT ONE OF THESE A LONG TIME AGO. SOOO NICE.

by:

Thank you for your inquiry. I just yesterday found time to install the Bulldog jack. The package shipped and was delivered earlier than promised, which was a pleasant surprise. I was impressed with the quality of the jack just taking it out of the box. I am more impressed with it on my trailer (Boatmaster with 17.5 Key West Stealth). It operates smoothly and with minimal effort. I chose to store the boat trailer on blocks rather that use a jack wheel as the wheel hangs too low when towing and installing and removing it is just another task I prefer to avoid. This jack replaces one ten years old used primarily in a salt water environment. It is a very good product. I did attach a picture of the jack.

by:

Product shipped in an extremely timely manor and arrived undamaged due to the quality of packaging. This Jack fit the front of my travel trailer (not commercial) just fine and only took minutes to install. My local trailer parts store was selling tongue jacks of half the capacity for nearly double the price. This was an awesome find and I'm glad i chose etrailer for my purchase. I did not rate 5 of 5 only because I have not had a chance to operate the jack.

by:

Great product wish the had the same exact model except a liter duty for a little cheaper. 3,000 pound lift weight is a little over kill for my 6.5 by 12 foot utility trailer. Like how it fits nice and snug under the frame.

by:

The one it is replacing was awesome and was used for a long time. Haven't taken my sailboat out of the driveway since 2021. 2022 was the first year since 2012 I haven't gone out of state to work and live on my sailboat. So I haven't even put my new A frame jack on yet. still sitting in the box.

by:

This trailer tongue jack is high quality. The perfect replacement for the original jack. Fits exactly. Solid heavy duty packaging ensured this jack would arrive without any issues. Thank you for the quick shipping! Ordered it Sunday night and it was shipped out monday morning. Thanks again!

One year later and still working like new. Excellent quality!

by:

The tongue jack fit perfectly with bolt on instalation in a very short period of time. The tongue weight and ease of lifting is very convenient and the operation of the jack is simple and matches the trailer application.
Nice doing business with your organization!!!

I have used the product repeatedly on my camper. The jack functions great, its a rugged product and durable. I would buy again if the need arises.

by:

So far, so good! It replaced the factory jack on our RPod 172 that broke and was very easy to install. The Bulldog folds up a little smaller for better ground clearance and has a smoother, easier lifting action. Great purchase!

Still going strong. The Bulldog is working out as well as you could hope. No complaints at all.

by:

Delivery was prompt and the product as advertised.

by:

BOUGHT ONE OF THESE A YEAR AGO OR SO FROM HERE. AND PUT IT ON MY VINTAGE TRAILER.
LIKED IT SO MUCH WHEN I GOT MY NEW TRAILER I REMOVED THE NEW TOP WIND JACK AND REPLACED IT WITH THIS SIDEWINDER SAME JACK SO I COULD HAVE MORE USABLE ROOM ON THE V-NOSE TRAILER TONGE AND BOUGHT THE CASTER FOR IT ALSO, AND IT WORKS GREAT..

by:

Part fit perfectly on 20 year old Haulmark trailer. Customer service rep. was very helpful in making sure I got the right part.

Great works perfectly. Fits in exactly the same spot.

by:

Perfect replacement and it bolted up in two minutes. I can raise and lower my 26' travel Trailer with one hand. Very pleased with the purchase!! The footplate (#PS1400700340) mounting pin hole did not match up though. I will have to drill a new hole for the pin if I want to use it. Not a big deal and am still happy with the service I received and the purchase. Kimberly D. was a great help in finding a replacement for the one I originally ordered that was unavailable. Etrailer has won my future business as well.

by:

The jack is very well made. I changed over from the original top crank jack on our 2005 Casita travel trailer to the Bulldog Side Crank A-Frame Jack which has a smoother mechanism and will be much easier to use. No drilling necessary as it aligns with the existing holes. I gave it a four because they did not include mounting bolts.

A friend installed one of these on his 2013 Casita trailer and feels it is a big improvement over the jack that came with the trailer.

by:

After trying for several weeks to find a replacement jack for my travel trailer I was able to work with your customer service department and get a jack for it. All I was able to find earlier wouldn't fit in the hole in my tongue. I am very pleased with the product.

by:

The trailer lift is still going strong after a year. I keep the the trailer outdoors and the is a minor discoloration at the top but no other visual issues. The turn mechanism is still as smooth as when installed. Very happy with the item.

by:

Much better than my original: Since this is geared, it is easier to crank when there is a large load on the trailer. It also seems more robust and durable than my OEM jack.

by:

overall good product, no problems with installation, worked well out of the box, castor wheel fit easily, One thing that would be nice, is a strap to hold the handle in place when the shaft is retracted, this would hold it still and prevent it from swinging around when driving down the road, will probably make one out of velcro. Overall, no major grumbles.

by:

Amazing product at a reasonable price. Shipping was fast I installed my alert and saved 2/3 of what a trailer repair would have been.
Finding my exact fit and features was easy.

Thank Zhou E-Trailer

by:

The A frame jack and caster are on the trailer with minor drilling to align with existing trailer holes..This is a rugged high quality jack and caster...I ordered the jack Sunday nite late PM and it arrived on thursday here in Boston, how much better service can you get ? Quality product, fastest shipping and excellent communications from etrailer.com.

by:

Works great! A definite upgrade from the original Jack that came equipped with my 16’ cargo trailer.

by:

Built heavier than I expected for the money spent. Cranks up and down with ease. Made my decision from reading reviews on this site. Cheaper buying here at etrailer.com than AMZN, even though I paid shipping here. Seeing a picture of it on the same style trailer that I was intending to mount it on, assured me that I was making the right choice. This was my 1st purchase through etrailer.com, but not my last.

by:

Has worked flawlessly. I replaced the original jack which had a folding leg with this drop leg model. Much better design! No worrying about it dragging. It tucks out of the way nicely.

  • Short Trailer Jack Recommendation for a 7000 lb A-frame Horse Trailer for Tailgate Clearance
I went out to my warehouse a pulled a few different jacks that I think will work for you. The Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack, # BD1550101344, measures 14-1/2 inches from the bracket to the top of the jack, but you will lose an inch of lift with a 13 inch lift. You do, however, gain an increase in weight capacity at 3,000 lbs with this jack. Our best option may be the Pro Series Round, A-Frame Jack, # PSRV20000103. • Is a Support Plate Needed When Installing Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack # BD1550101344
It would be a good idea to add a support plate, like # BDSPB50, when installing A-frame jack # BD1550101344. The plate can be welded or bolted on. This plate fits on the underside of the trailer. The jack will then bolt into place. If you need a foot use # PS1400700340 or for a wheel use # PS1400750340.

  • Will Mounting Bolt Pattern On a Bulldog A-Frame Jack Match the Bolt Pattern On a Fulton A-Frame Jack
All A-Frame mounted jacks like the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack, part # BD1550101344, use the same 3-inch mounting hole bolt pattern. In other words, the mounting holes are a universal size and pattern so that any A-Frame jack will fit into any A-Frame jack mount. As long as your trailer has an A-Frame jack mount, this jack will fit. You will want to make sure and replace your current A-Frame jack with a jack of similar specifications with a lift capacity the same or higher.

  • Will Bulldog A-Frame Jack # BD1550101344 Fit 2,000-Lb Boat and Trailer and Be Corrosion-Resistant
The Bulldog Round Sidewind A-Frame Jack, part # BD1550101344, has a lift capacity of 3,000 lbs and will work fine on your 2,000-lb boat and trailer for lift capacity. The lift capacity means this jack is able to lift and support up to 3,000 lbs. An A-frame jack like the Bulldog is mounted on the tongue of the trailer so it is rated to lift the tongue weight of the boat and trailer. If you have a 2,000-lb boat and trailer, the tongue weight range would be 10 to 15 percent or 200 to 300...

  • Topwind Trailer Jack vs. Sidewind Trailer Jack for A-Frame Trailer
The difference between top wind and sidewind is really mainly about personal preference and somewhat about clearance. Basically which way to you want to crank the jack? Horizontally or vertically? Based on your picture you'd easily be able to use either style. I prefer sidewind jacks like the part # BD1550101344 which is galvanized to prevent corrosion. Personally I find topwinds a bit more awkward to crank especially under weight.

As far as the Ultimate Trailer Jack # 322-RDJ-2K goes the design, and more specifically the placement of the pin, is placed close to the mounting point of the jack because that is where the jack is most stable. As far as I know they are not yet making one that would work out well for your travel trailer. Your best option is a different jack that doesn't stick down so far below the trailer frame. The most corrosion resistant jack for your application is the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack, # BD1550101344, that you mentioned. This jack has a clear zinc finish and will last much longer in the salt water environment you described. Stepping up to a 3,000 pound jack will make cranking the trailer a bit easier than a 2,000 pound jack and will help the jack to last longer.
