Video Transcript for Coghlans Tent Pole Shock Cord Replacement Review

Hi everyone, it's Evangeline. And today we'll be taking a look at the Coghlan's Shock Cord Spool. This can be a replacement part for your tent poles or even used as emergency supplies. We'll take a look at its features right here at etrailer. So I do a lot of camping and it's natural for your tent to have a lifetime for its shock cord. After about 5 years, you may notice that the shock cord will lose its elasticity.

You're gonna have to make more knots in it, tighten it up or you could replace it really easily. So I've actually been using this with some of our tent poles and some of our awnings, just to get more life back into those tent poles and make it easier for me to set up camp. So you're gonna have 18 feet worth of shock cord in here, wrapped around on this spool. This is going to be very similar to most of the shock cord that you'll find in most of your tents. This will be 13/16 inches in diameter.

So you can see how it's small enough to fit through most of those tent poles, but still provide that tension. So if you are using this as a replacement part, make sure you get the right replacement parts for your situations. If you just need to replace the shock cord that's where this comes in handy. If you want a full shock cord replacement kit, we have that and that includes the replacement ferrules, the wires to help bring this to your tent poles. And we also have a tent pole replacement or repair kit which includes those fiber glass tent poles.

You can find all of those right here at etrailer. So this is the reason we need to replace the shock cord. So the cord itself became really unflexible. So I had to pull it and keep adding knots to keep all the tent poles together until it came to the point where it pulled too tight and then it released from the bottom tent pole. So we're just gonna go ahead and label all of our tent poles to make sure they come back to the same spot.

This is a very simple setup because they're all the same but sometimes you have different sized poles for different areas of your awnings or tents. And that's when labeling them with a marker will be very helpful. After labeling your poles, you're now ready to cut the shock cord. So we're just gonna go up on the tent poles until we find the cord and we're just gonna make a cut there, that way we can take it out completely. Usually they're connected at the very end. There should be a knot there. So go ahead and pop that out of the tent pole. And that's gonna be where you put your new knot. Before we replace our shock cord, let's do a quick comparison. You can see the old shock cord here where it's a little stretched out and frayed and then we have our nice, shiny new one. So now we're going to start threading our shock cord. So remember that end cap we took off of the tent pole Well, now you're gonna put the new shock cord through, make a knot so that it secures itself in that cap. And then continue threading these through the rest of your tent poles. You see here, how I made a hook with the wire. Well, now I brought that through our tent pole and then I'm gonna use that to wrap around or hook onto your shock cord and then pull that through your tent pole. And once you've made it through all your tent poles and you have your end, what you're then gonna do is you're gonna try to get as much tension as you can. So pull on that shock cord. You want the tension so that everything will spring together when it's in the folded up position. So once you have your tension, you can then make your knot. Don't forget to cut off the excess cord once you've made your knot. So if you did everything correctly, you should have a well tensioned tent pole. And the reason you want good tension is to make it easier when you're setting up your campsite, just like that. Now let's say your tent is all nice and new. I would still pick this up because wear and tear does happen over time. It's nice to have is on hand just in case but also you can use this for different situations. Let's say you're at the river or you're at the beach and you wanna hang up your wet clothes. You can use this as a clothes line. This can also be a handy strap for different items or inside of your tent, if you wanna hang things up by the tent pole or you can even use this as an emergency tourniquet. Shock cords and tent stakes are the most often replaced item at the campsite. So this is definitely something worth adding to your cart.
