E-Z Lube and Easy Grease-Compatible Hub for Simple Lubrication

The grease cap on this hub is specially designed to work with your Dexter E-Z Lube or etrailer Easy Grease axle to make lubricating bearings quick and easy. Just remove the plug on the grease cap, attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, and inject the grease. It will flow easily to both inner and outer bearings. Not only does this make lubricating the bearings easy, but it also helps to prevent corrosion of the hub. This is because you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacing Hubs and Leaf Springs on a Small Utility Trailer
We can definitely get you the parts needed to get your Lowes Trailer up and running, but there are a few things you will need to do to confirm the following parts will fit. First, you will need to determine the bolt pattern of your wheels. I linked an article that assists with this process. If you have a five bolt pattern, I have found that Option 3 in the article is the easiest to use. Second, you will need to remove one of the hubs to get access to the bearings. There are usually numbers...

  • Recommended 5.70-8 Tire and Wheel with Compatible Hub for Axle
We do have some options for you to add a 5.7-8 size tire and a hub to your trailer. For a wheel/tire combination I recommend going with the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Wheel # AM30155. This has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and comes with a load range of D (1,075 lbs at 100 psi). Since 8" wheels are typically installed on 2,000 lb axles you would need the hub assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K if you have L44643 bearings or assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-2K for L44649 bearings. Both options...

  • Replacement Idler Hub Needed for 2,000 lb Trailer
The closest that we have for your application is the Idler Hub # AKIHUB-440-2-EZ-1K with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern or the # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K which a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. These are designed for a 1" spindle which is the standard for a 2,000 lb trailer axle. If you truly have a 3/4" spindle diameter then you're going to be looking at an older setup for something that's really hard to come by so my recommendation would be to change out your axle to something with modern specs so it's...

  • Recommended Grease for the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly
The Grease that comes packed inside the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly item # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K is similar to the LubriMatic Marine Trailer Wheel Bearing Grease item # L54FR. It is made of a calcium sulfonate base, and features superior corrosion control and lubrication. This is a highly recommended marine grade grease. You will need a Mini Grease Gun like item # 30-800 to use the smaller 3oz cartridges.

The Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K you were looking at does not include a spindle nut, but does include new bearings # L44643, races, grease seal, grease cap, and lug nuts. Typically customers reuse there current spindle nut, but if yours is missing/lost or damaged you should be able to use 1" Spindle Nut # 165686 as that is the typical spindle nut used for an axle that uses the above hub. You can confirm this by measuring the diameter of the threaded portion of your spindle...

  • Finding Correct Trailer Wheels to Match Hubs for a BT8 Spindle
You're correct that all of the 8 inch rims we carry have a pilot hole that's in the range of 2.8 inches. Not nearly as large as the 3.275 inches you need. The best solution I recommend is replacing the hubs, unfortunately. I recommend part # AKIHUB-545-2-1K for standard spindles or part # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K for EZ Lube spindles. I don't recommend boring out the pilot hole of the rim or grinding down the hub. It will very likely compromise the integrity of either part.
