Finding Correct Trailer Wheels to Match Hubs for a BT8 Spindle

Question:

I believe I have a BT8 spindle and hub- 5 bolt on 4.5inch -8inch rim built in 1982. - Standard L44643 bearing, 1.250 seal ID. The problem is the rim needs a 3.275inch minimum pilot hole actual hub spigot measure. All I can find are rims with 2.8inch -2.83inch pilot holes. Where can I find the right rims?? Is it acceptable to machine the rim pilot hole out to the correct fit or the hub spigot down to the 2.8inch fit?? Is this an old standard and the only fix is new hubs to match the only rims I can find??

You're correct that all of the 8 inch rims we carry have a pilot hole that's in the range of 2.8 inches. Not nearly as large as the 3.275 inches you need.

The best solution I recommend is replacing the hubs, unfortunately. I recommend part # AKIHUB-545-2-1K for standard spindles or part # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K for EZ Lube spindles.

I don't recommend boring out the pilot hole of the rim or grinding down the hub. It will very likely compromise the integrity of either part.
