Hitch arrived on time, installation took around 40 minutes. I also installed a 4 pin connector holder under the hitch so no more connector hanging down when not being used.

by:

Great hitch, very strong I like it because it was easy to install 15 min. tops pulls my utility trailer well not to mention my bike carrier.Great site keep up the good work etrailer.

by:
2001 Ford Explorer

Just as described. Took a little finagling to get it in the right spot, but went on fine.

by:
Ford Transit Connect

The hitch arrived in great time so I could work on it this weekend. Despite the box getting severely damaged during transit, the hitch was basically fine, aside from some scratched paint. Thankfully the good quality hardware was securely taped to the hitch. The installation would have been much faster if I didn't have to fight a bent bumper and the factory 4-wire plug mounted to the bumper. In the end, I was victorious and am very pleased with the new form fitting hitch on my wife's truck. Thank you etrailer!

AS has always been the case, this hitch fit my 25 year old Explorer Sport like a glove. Came with all the hardware and clear instructions.. We will use the hitch to tow a small trailer and to mount our bike rack. It is a big deal that I didn't have to remove the under mount full size spare tire.

Excellent hitch systems for hard to find hook up for older Ford Explorer.
I am very satisfied with this hitch system. Be aware the wiring harness will have to be secured up out of the swing path of the ball which can be done by installin a screen door spring to keep the harness out of the way

Im very satisfied, with no complaints

by:
1998 Ford Explorer

The hitch went on without ANY problems on our '98 Ford Explorer! Didn't even have to remove our full size spare to install. I am very happy and relieved that we didn't run into any problems like ppl from other sites reported about their supposed 'vehicle-specific' hitch fitting their vehicle. It fit perfectly and appears to be a great solid piece of workmanship. Time will tell, but I believe it will outlast us for our needs.

EXCELLENT customer service and support as well. Always best to choose a company with great customer service over any slight price difference. Although that wasn't the case at etrailer - best prices available!

STILL a great hitch! No wear than we have seen and a reliable addition to our towing ability! Again, the customer service really and literally sold it for us!

Installed in approx 1 Hr.Two people , 1 to hold hitch up on one other side would cut approx 15 mins off ,but I am happy with the hitch . used it about 4 days latter worked great for pulling the trailer , backing and hitching too. Well satisfied as with all things I have ordered from etrailer , Highly Recommend

1991 Ford Explorer

The tab for the top bolt had to be ground 1/16” near top closest to bumper. Bottom hole closest to bumper for bolt had to be drilled. What should have bean a half hour job took hours. That being said the receiver hitch was very well made.

by:

Thank you for the quick delivery

by:

Had it installed by my mechanics, along with the front receiver I purchased at the same time. Both installed in under an hour. Only problem was they had to uninstall my skid plate, but we’ll look at that later as they said it would just take a couple mods to reinstall. Plan on using the receiver for winch mounting and small trailer pulling, as well as adding a bike rack and rear cargo carrier. Very impressed with the quality and FAST shipping!

by:

Ordered on line . Very good website, easy to use and fast response. Fitment was perfect all bolt holes lined up perfectly. This vehicle has over 170,000 miles on it and it fit perfectly! Goes to show you when you buy good parts, you get good results! Thanks for a great product.

1999 Ford Explorer

The hitch and wiring harness seem to be of good quality but the end of the hitch was bent by about two inches when I received it, probably as a result of being dropped during shipping. I was able to bend the hitch back into shape but the paint was chipped off where it was bent. Had it not been bent, it would have been perfect. I was able to install the hitch and it looks like it will work great. The plug in harness was easy to install and works perfectly. I recommend having the hitches packed in some sort of shock absorbing material like styrofoam.

1997 Ford Explorer

Very easy to install and a great product.it fit prefer

by:
1999 Ford Explorer

Although I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. It is sound and looks good.

by:

It's a nice product, but the hitch was too small, had to pull the ends out by about .5-.75 inch on each side. Having to do this was no easy task at all, the tools we needed (lucky I was at the dealer to do this) are things most people do not own at their homes, so the DIY at 25 minutes is unrealistic, even the pro install at 10 minutes is an HUGE understatement. If you have an ball hitch on the footstep it will have to be removed, because the nut underneath will be in the way of the hitch install.

by:
2003 Ford Explorer

Shipped to the house (free) arrived within 4 days. Slipped onto my 2003 Ford Explorer Sport XLT like a glove. No interference with the 16inch spare tire tucked under the back bumper which already had a 2" ball attached to it with an existing trailer plug and associated wires . Took less than 45 min to install including setting up the 4 tools I use thru clean up. Installed in my home garage. Hitch appears to be well made. Good looking welds. Hole alignment was spot on. Did the install using one hand to hold the hitch while the other hand installed the hardware. Beautiful engineering. I honestly cannot remember the last time a little automobile job like this went so smooth.

by:
1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Excellent service received on my order in regards to delivery. Great looking hitch and very friendly and professinal service from the Curt dealership in St. Louis Park when I had trouble installing the hitch because of a bent bumper on the right that they fixed for me so I could have a perfect fit. It looks real sharp on the vehicle.

by:
1979 Ford Explorer

Got the hitch installed. Took about an hour. The square carridge bolt holders needed some grinding on one side to fit the 1979 Ford Explorer 4door Limited frame rails. Nothing serious, but took some time to figure out why the bolt wanted to remain at an angle, not seated properly through the frame hole.

The receiver part sticks out rearward more than a "Hidden Hitch". Gotta watch the shins.

by:
1999 Ford Explorer

This hitch receiver took about an hour to install and was easy to do by myself. One thing of note, two of the bolts are torqued to 150 ft lbs and the other four are torqued to 110 ft lbs. So make sure you have the ability to do that before you start. I did lower the spare tire to make room for my torque wrench to swing. Finally, I also recommend spraying some cable lube inside the spare tire cable assembly while the tire is down, to keep it freed up.

by:
2002 Ford Explorer

Fit up was straight forward, even though hitch was too heavy to manage with one person brute strength. Ended up dropping spare tire and resting one end of hitch on it while I got a few bolts loosely installed on other end and then loosely bolted up first end. Had to run to hardware store to get correct size wrenches. Would be helpful to know wrench sizes in advance. Otherwise great, looks really good.

by:
2001 Ford Explorer

Easier to install then we expected. My horse trailer rides MUCH more level with this hitch then it did with the bumper hitch. And now I no longer need to worry about the bumper falling off!

by:

Easy to Install.

  • What is Needed to Add 7-Way to 1995 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package
Thanks for the order of the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13540 and we can get you squared away with everything else you need, including the wiring, so you power your trailer's lights and electric brakes. Since you don't have the factory tow package with a connector already on your 1995 Ford Explorer, the first thing you need to do is add a 4-way, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118345, and I've added a link to the installation instructions for you to check...

For your 2000 Ford Explorer, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class lll Max frame Hitch, part # 75096. Per the attached installation instructions, there is no drilling required for installation, and it will work with the full-size spare tire. The towing weight capacity of this hitch is 5,000 lbs and a maximum tongue weight of 500 lbs. Another Class lll hitch that works with the full size spare is the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13540. This hitch has a 4,000 lb towing capacity and a tongue weight...

Even though we don't have any bike racks to carry your trike, I do have a solution for you. You can add a hitch and a small utility trailer. As they are similarly priced, I recommend the Curt # 13540 because it is a little easier to install. This "hitch" gets you the part that bolts onto your Explorer frame and the 2" square...
