What is Needed to Add 7-Way to 1995 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package

Question:

Just purchased from you the Item #13540 Hitch. Exactly what do I need for electrical hookup lights and electric brakes. Want to be sure before I order. Have watched the video on installation of the system on a 1996 Ford Explorer which is probably similar to mine. Thank you.

Thanks for the order of the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13540 and we can get you squared away with everything else you need, including the wiring, so you power your trailer's lights and electric brakes.

Since you don't have the factory tow package with a connector already on your 1995 Ford Explorer, the first thing you need to do is add a 4-way, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118345, and I've added a link to the installation instructions for you to check out which detail how to install this.

You will then need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7, which will give you a 7-way connector, circuit breakers and the rest of the hardware needed to power your trailer's lights and install a brake controller. I have added a link to the installation video of this kit on a 1996 Explorer, and you were absolutely correct in that your install will be the same, as these are the same generation of Explorer.

This will allow you to add a brake controller and for that I highly recommend the Brake Controller # TK63VR because this is the most cost-effective proportional brake controller, which means you get the benefit of smooth braking (proportional to how you hit your Explorer's brakes) and an easy-to-use controller at a superb price. You will also need Wiring Adapter Harness # 20127 with this controller.

I have added a link to a video review of the I-Command for you to check out as well.
