Hitch, Wiring and Brake Controller Installation for 1998 Ford Explorer
Question:
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with the 16 tires. I need to pull a 24 Fleetwood camper to FL from VT. The camper is equipped but not my car. Can you advise me if this is the hitch I need, and if so what other accessories would I want to have. I have a set of I suppose sway bars that hook onto camper, but since I have no hitch on Explorer I would need one to accommodate the bars. Never pulled with this vehicle before so dont know much about it.

For your 1998 Explorer, I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Receiver, part # 75096, which is compatible with the full sized spare tire. This hitch is compatible with weight distribution systems.
You will also need a trailer connector, if the vehicle does not already have one. If the Explorer is equipped with the tow package, use part # 118241. If you do not have the tow package, use part # 118345.
Due to the size of the camper, I am assuming it has electric brakes. You will need a brake controller installed in the Explorer to actuate them. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. You will also need our Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7. The kit contains everything necessary to install the controller.
I will include links to the installation instructions for all of the parts I have recommended, as well as a link to our Brake Controller Installation Guide. We also have an installation video that shows a brake controller being installed on a 1996 Explorer that you might find helpful.
