Trailer Hitch Recommendation fora 1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4-Door with Full Size Spare Tire

Question:

I have a 99 Explorer XLT, 4DR, full-size spare. Id like a bumper hitch with 2inch receiver to attach hitch-mounted accessories. This SUV has no business towing a trailer anymore and from what I understand installing a frame-mounted hitch can be a bear on this vehicle with the full size spare. This makes the cheaper bumper hitch an attractive choice. It looks like the holes on my bumper do not line up with the universal fit E-3S I have 2 holes that are 4inch apart, with a vertical tab that has holes in it a few inches forward from these holes. Im not sure if there is enough space on the step to drill holes at 8-3/4, so I was wondering if there is another step bumper hitch available that might be a better fit, or if there is a frame mounted hitch that will be easy to install and reasonably priced. If necessary, I can send photos to assist with the search. Thank you!

The Curt bumper mount hitch # E-3S is the only bumper mount hitch we currently offer. Since it is not going to work you are left with a custom fit frame mount trailer hitch.

The Curt hitch # 13540 is the most cost effective option that allows the full size spare to remain with the hitch installed. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view so you can determine if the installation is something you are willing to perform yourself.

This hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 400 pounds and gross trailer weight capacity of 4,000 pounds. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine what its capacities are. Do not exceed the lower of the 2 ratings.
