Video Transcript for Performance Tool Wiring - Tools for Wiring - PTW2991 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the performance tool computer safe logistic probe. It's going to feature a computer safe design drawing less then 7 mil amps. It will test high and low voltages on all vehicle circuits including computerized engine and body controls. It's going to feature a bright red and green LED. It's going to interpret voltage signals such as ground, power, and frequency. This system is designed to work on 6, 12, and 24 volt systems.

The test probe, that's this portion right here, that's going to measure pretty close to 3 and 3/16 of an inch, right around that area, 3 and 1/8. It's also going to come with your heavy gauge color coded battery clips. A really nice design, easy grip design on those. When the coiled cable or cord is fully stretched out it's going to be able to reach up to 10 feet. When you're ready to use or connect the probe what you'll need to do is you'll need to connect the probe clips to the vehicle's battery. The red clip, again, it's color coded so that's going to go to the positive terminal.

The black clip goes to the negative terminal. You'll need to turn the power on to the component or circuit being tested. Keep in mind the ignition may need to be in on or accessory position. In some cases the engine may need to be running. All you have to do is touch the components circuit wire with the probe's tip.

The LED will glow red if positive source is probed, or green if a negative source is probed. That tip right here, it's going to measure about 3 and 3/16 of an inch long and it's insulated. If the LED does not glow at all the probe may not be making contact with the wire. The wire or the component maybe faulty. Power may not be reaching the circuit or the circuit may not be properly grounded. That's going to do it for today's look at the performance tool computer safe logistic probe.

  • Trailer Taillight Running Lights Not Working
If there are running lights on the trailer and they are working be sure to check your taillight bulbs first. To test the wiring, first you are going to need a Circuit Tester # PTW2991. I have linked our help article on testing the wiring for 4 and 5-way wiring on a trailer. The first place to start would be to test the connection at the truck connector. This will vary from different connectors. On a 4-way connector it is the brown wire that is the female adapter closest to the single...

  • Trailer Lights Not Working On Multiple Trailers With 2005 GMC Sierra 1500
It definitely sounds like an issue with your 7-way connection or the wiring that leads to it on your 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71. I recommend using a Circuit Tester # PTW2991 to begin checking the poles of the 7-way on your Sierra. First make sure to check your fuses and relays that are under the hood and in the cabin for any that are damaged. The circuit tester can help with that task as well. Once all the fuses and relays are checked begin checking the poles on the 7-way. If you find...

According to my research the following wires for the 7-Way on your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 should carry the following functions: Green OR White/Green - Reverse White - Ground Blue - Brake Controller Green OR Green/Purple - Right Turn/Stop Red/Black OR Red/Green - 12V Power Brown OR Gray/Brown - Running Lights Yellow OR Yellow/Gray - Left Turn/Stop The reverse light function green wire should be slightly larger than the green wire for the right turn/stop function (if you have the 2 green...

  • Trailer Harness on 1999 Toyota 4Runner Does Not Work
Since this is the first time you have used the connector on your 4Runner, if it has been awhile since it was installed or if it is factory then there can be some corrosion build up inside the connector preventing it from working. This happened to a friend of mine recently. Scraping out the corrosion will help. Also make sure the main ground is connected to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface. If that does not help then use a circuit tester such as # PTW2991 to test the vehicle...

  • Trailer LED Tail Light Stopped Working on Right Side
It sounds like you are missing that 1 connection on the trailer tail light. Typically, a trailer tail light will have 2 or 3 wires. If it has 3 wires then there will be a ground wire (attached to the frame) a wire for brake lights and turn signal (these are the same wire) and a third wire for the running lights. You can use a circuit tester such as # PTW2991 to test the black wire to see which functions it is carrying. Have someone run through the lighting functions in the tow vehicle...

  • Trailer Wiring Problems On A 2019 Chevrolet 2500 High Country
Seems to be the issue is on the blue brake output wire/circuit. That's typically what triggers this error message on the factory systems. That is my best guess, but after looking around I've found that the 7-way on your 2019 Chevrolet Silverado should have the functions as followed: Green OR Green/Purple - Right Turn/Stop Red/Black OR Red/Green - 12V Power Brown OR Gray/Brown - Running Lights Yellow OR Yellow/Gray - Left Turn/Stop Green OR White/Green - Reverse White - Ground Blue - Brake...

  • Redarc Brake controller RED44FR
It is possible to install the Redarc Tow-Pro # RED44FR into virtually every vehicle but will depend on the experience that the installer has. Most RV dealerships only like to go the Plug and Play route, which your 2016 Volvo XC90 does not offer. The Brake Controller is looking for 4 wire connections. A constant 12v power, a 12V ground, a brake switch power(the wire that only shows power when pedal is pressed) and an output to the trailer 7-way. If this is something that you want to attempt...

  • P3 Trailer Brake Controller Shows Trailer Connected with No Trailer and Voltage When Moved
First, if the controller thinks a trailer is connected that is usually because there is something drawing power on the blue wire. To test this, sever the blue wire a few inches from the back of the controller. Then use a circuit tester such as # PTW2991 to test the end of the blue wire coming out of the controller. It should only show power when the manual override is pressed. If it shows power at any other time then there is something wrong inside the controller and it will need to be...

  • 4-Way Wiring Issue on 1997 Jeep Wrangler With LED Taillights
I believe we are running into one of 2 issues. I believe the issue may be with the LED taillights that you installed 6 months ago. Depending on how they are controlled that might be where the issue is coming from. It could have its own circuitry that is causing the power to crossover and that is why you are seeing both turn signals going when they shouldn't be. I recommend reaching out to the Taillight Manufacturer to see if they are aware of this being an issue. The second could be the...

  • Trailer Brakes Will Not Activate When Pushing The Brake Pedal
If your trailer brakes activate when using the manual override but not when pushing on the brake pedal you may have a bad connection or a faulty brake switch. I have also linked below our article on Brake Controller Troubleshooting. Also if you have a proportional brake controller and you are not moving the trailer brakes will not activate as the controller does not sense the inertia needed to activate the brakes. First I would push on the brake pedal and see if the vehicles brake lights...

  • Lights Not Working After Installing Roadmaster Diode Wiring Kit
First, lets look at what is going on with the motor home. If it has a trailer connector on it you will want to test it using a circuit tester such as # PTW2991. If some of the circuits are not working then you know that the issue is on the motor home side. If they all check out fine then the issue is likely in either the kit used or the motorhome Using this will help you check for shorts in your current wiring.

  • Using Tail Light Convertor 118158 for a Third Brake Light and it Will Not Light Up
Make sure that the tail light converter, # 118158, is properly grounded to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface and do the same for the third brake light. Without a good proper ground the circuit cannot be completed. If this does not help then we need to do a little testing. First, disconnect the trailer and use a circuit tester such as # PTW2991 to test the vehicle side trailer connector just to make sure everything is working on that end. Next make sure the vehicle side and...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer with Brake Lights But No Turn or Running Lights
That's a very interesting situation because the turn signals should be on the same circuit as your brake lights. Since your 2019 Ram 2500 is pretty new I think the issue is on your trailer, but it would still help to test the connector on your pickup with a circuit tester like part # PTW2991 to ensure you are getting power to your trailer. I have attached photos of which functions should be located on the different pins for both a 4-Way and a 7-Way connector. If you don't get all of those...

  • How to Determine Where to Connect Tow Bar Wiring for 2019 Chevy Equinox Premier
To install the Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-154 on your 2019 Chevy Equinox Premier you will need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2991 to determine what wiring colors for your tail lights carry which functions. Unfortunately we don't have a wiring diagram for your vehicle that I can pass along to you. Attached is an installation video on a 2018 Equinox that you can use as an example but I'd still test your wiring to make sure everything is connected to the proper circuit.

  • Troubleshooting One Set of Brakes Running Hot on Tandem Axle Trailer
I recommend using a circuit tester like part # PTW2991 to check and see if the wiring to your trailer brakes has constant power or not as this could be a result of 12V power jumping over to the brake circuit for that rear axle. If those look okay then you need to double check the adjustment of your trailer brakes. You want them to slightly drag when you freely spin the wheel. If the wheel is locked or drags a lot when you spin the wheel then that means your brakes are still too aggressive. If...

  • With Trailer Connected Truck Reverse Lights and Trailer Brake Lights Are Not Working
It sounds like you might have a few different issues going on here. First, we need to test the vehicle side 7-Way connector to make sure it is working properly. Use a circuit tester such as # PTW2991 to test the pins on the connector while someone sits in the truck and runs through the light functions. • Finding the Brake Switch Wire to Install a Brake Controller on a 2014 Toyota Highlander
You have to test the brake switch wires with a circuit tester such as # PTW2991 to determine the correct wire for a brake controller red wire. You want the wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed and not with the headlights or turn signals on. On a 2013 Highlander we installed a brake controller on, the brake switch wire was blue. I would start testing with the blue wire on the brake switch if applicable to your 2014.

  • Trailer Lights Not Working With 2012 Ford F-250
I would start by using a Circuit Tester # PTW2991 to test your connection at the truck (4-way or 7-way). This will help you to determine where to begin looking. If you are not getting any lights at the connector, I would first follow the connection and look for damaged wiring or a connection that came undone. If still nothing check your fuses and relays on your 2012 Ford F-250. There are quite a lot of them that are tied into the towing circuits. In the engine compartment fuses 22, 26,...
