  If routing the wire in your trailer frame caused any of the wire insulation to come off of the wires and now the metal core of the wire is touching the frame of the trailer that would cause a short. Based on what you are experiencing and you saying the wires are beat up I would be very inclined to believe that the issue is that bare wire is grounding to the trailer frame. • Why Would Trailer with Electric Brakes Lock Up When Vehicle is in Reverse
  If you have a trailer with electric brakes and they are locking up when the vehicle is in reverse that means that you have a short between the reverse light circuit and the brake output circuit which is locking the brakes up. Go over the two circuits and see if you can find where they might be shorting out together and causing this problem. Electric tape like part # DW04367 can be used to insulate the two circuits.
