Video Transcript for Performance Tool Trailer Brakes W80630 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Performance Tools universal offset brake adjustment spoon. This tool is for adjusting drum brakes, has the angles blades, one on each end for confined areas. This will adjust the star adjuster and the screw adjuster type brakes very quickly and easily. It's made of a drop forged steel and has a chrome plating to it to help resist corrosion. I just want to try to show you what it's used for. Here's a typical drum brake that has the star adjuster right at the bottom, so on the very back you will access to adjust that through the access hole right here. This tool is made to be able to go through that access hole and reach that adjustment gear and adjust your brakes.

Depending on how much clearance you have, you might have to use the 90 degree angle. It's part of this smaller angle one. That should do it for the review on the Performance Tools universal offset brake adjustment spoon.

A must have for drum brakes! Get one!

by:

If you don't have one of these and have drum trailer brakes you need this.

by:

Great tool. Works as promised and much better than trying to use screwdriver that doesn’t fit properly. Perfect brake adjusting tool.

by:

Truly makes installing the brake controller a snap... two snaps actually.

by:

This is a MUST for adjusting trailer drum brakes. Makes it so much easier to reach in and set the brakes. Don't even have to remove the wheel to do it! The drums I have are Item #AKEBRK-6

helped on adjustments.

The brakes are ok except 1 of them fell apart inside. I had to open it up and remove the debri as it was making all kinds of raquet and i thought it was going to seize up. But no big deal i have 3 still working . Thanks Russ

Thanks for the follow up Russ, depending on which parts fell apart we do have some replacement items available for example the replacement shoe lining kit is available as part # AKBRKR-S-10, the replacement magnet is available as part # AKBRKR-M10, and we have 2 replacement spring options, part # AKBRKR-SP, and part # AKBRKR-AS-1012

Just the tool I needed.

by:

My brakes were not working right on my trailer. So I bought new trailer brake kits from etrailer. The kits came fast and I installed them The only think I did not like is the wires from the magnets on the brakes are very thin wire. I wish they would have used thicker wire with a heavier coating.

by:

I have two trailers on which I adjust the brakes about once a year, and I find it worthwhile to spend a little bit on this tool. It works better than a screwdriver, but crusty brakes will fight you when adjusting through the backing plate regardless of the tool you use.

Great quality product

by:

I was extremely surprised with the positive response with their customer service, error on my part ordering the wrong part. Extremely quick delivery exchange (2days) living on the Canadian West Coast.
The brakes are doing their job great, easy installation using etrailer tutorial videos. Great company will use again.

by:

The only reason I do not give you 5 stars is because your web site. When internet ordering, it should instantly state when a part is out of stock. Even nicer would be expected restocking dates. The parts received were exactly what I ordered for my electric brake conversion from surge brakes at far less expense than reparing the internally rusted surge brake system. There was a plethora of information on your web site to assist me in ordering the correct parts for the conversion. Plus there were videos to see how to complete the conversion and how parts were installed and adjusted. Customer service was excellent.

by:

Brake assemblies were just the ticket to getting my cargo trailer brakes back to new working order. Shipping was great and fast. I needed them quick, as my old brakes had worn out and broke up. This caused damage to the internal works. A super way to replace you brakes and worn out pieces. I would urge anyone with internal brake problems to give these a try!!

by:

I was initially concerned about finding the right parts as the trailer was fairly old. etrailer had just what I needed. The website is so elegant. I was able to find the right parts quickly and with comparative options to make a final selection. The how-to videos are great. This made installation a little more comfortable. Especially when you do not perform this type of work every day. The parts were of high quality and are working as expected. I highly recommend etrailer for any of your trailer needs.

So Disappointed!! This is a review of my order experience, not the product. I needed to replace the brake assemblies on my camper before we could go on vacation. I call to see how long it would take to receive and was told 2 days. I placed the order and received as told. I was about to be impressed until I opened the box. They not only sent the wrong brand, but also the wrong size. I called customer service and had to wait 45 minutes for someone answer. She agreed it was their mistake. I told her I only had two more days to get them on and still go on vacation. I asked for next day delivery. She was able to do that, but said it would ship that day and go 2nd day. The next day, the order had not shipped and the tracking number I was given doesn't even register on UPS. I don't when or if I will receive the correct product. Very disappointed that they would not step up and make it right.

by:

I'm overhauling a 20 year old boat trailer and etrailer.com was the ONE and ONLY site on the internet that had both the necessary parts for this old trailer, but also instructional videos and hints on what to order and how to complete the job with a minimum amount of mistakes. This particular order (2 hyd. brake assemblies, hardware and brake tool) qualified for free shipping, but I didn't expect the above average delivery time also (2 days). I'm not finished with this project, but am sure I'll be doing more business with etrailer. Thanks for the great website and exceptional service.

by:

Nice tool to have but not worth getting if you get the never adjust brakes. The design stops you from using this.

Needless to say it’s a tool a still keep in the trailer just in case

by:

This order along with various orders on the past have been handled excellently, pricing is good and delivery is efficient.

by:

The brake assemblies I received seem to be just fine. They were a good fit on my trailer. Haven't completed the job yet to try the brakes out, but they look great. All my other parts were correct and very well packaged. I really appreciate the great customer service. These guys seem to really care.

by:

Everything arrived but I was surprised that small parts weren't lost because one cardboard box (brake drum) had split open and the inner bag (lug nuts, etc) was ripped.. I would encourage the packers to make sure packages are sturdy enough for the trip.

by:

Brake back plates, shoes, seals, etc. were exact fit and very rapid change out in just a few minutes. Connections for brake magnets and of course cleaning took the most time. Adjusted brakes to Dexter instructions and worked perfect.

by:

Sure beats using a large flat blade screwdriver. Should have bought one of these years ago

Worth the price! The brakes are difficult enough to set and adjust, this tool works good.

  • Troubleshooting Grinding Noise At Low Speeds On Driver Side of 2019 Forest River Travel Trailer
Based on the noise you are describing, it sounds like the brake assembly on the driver side is out of adjustment, or is sticking. This is pretty easy to check by taking a look at the included article that goes over adjusting trailer brakes, and first making sure your brakes are adjusted correctly. Using a trailer brake adjustment spoon like # W80630 will make the adjustment process easier. If they are, then next you will want to remove the hub to make sure no grease from a failed grease...

  • Troubleshooting New Trailer Brakes And Why Causing Tires To Skid When Pulling Away From A Stop
It sounds like either your brake controller is on a higher braking setting (most likely) or your brakes themselves might need some adjusting. If you need to adjust your brakes, you can use a tool like a Brake Adjustment Spoon, Item # W80630, or a flat blade screwdriver to adjust the setting of the star wheel. I have attached a video that should help and you would start around the 3-minute mark.

  • Trailer Brakes Lock Up at Low Speeds With Any Tow Vehicle and Any Brake Controller
The first thing I would look at is the adjustment of the brakes and see if backing them off a bit helps with the issue you're having, assuming that they're manually adjusting brakes. You'll want to use something like the Brake Adjustment Spoon for Drum Brakes # W80630 to back them off a bit; I've also linked our help article on brake adjustments for you to use as a reference if you're not familiar with the process. I recommend starting with that and seeing how the performance changes....

  • What Does the Brake Spoon # W80630 Do
The brake spoon part # W80630 that you referenced is designed to adjust the tightness of brake assemblies so that they operate as they should. As long as you have drum brakes on the axle you are referring to this product should work well for you. Check out the video (see link). Beginning at the 4:23 mark, our installer shows how to adjust your trailer brakes.

  • Troubleshooting Locked Up Trailer Brakes Even When Unhooked From Battery
If the brakes are locked up even when there is no power being delivered to the brakes, the issue is mechanical and not electrical. If you have a breakaway kit installed, the breakaway pin may be removed and causing the brakes to be applied. Make sure the breakaway pin is in all the way and not causing the issue. I have attached a drawing of the wiring for a breakaway kit installation. Check the brake assemblies out and look for any signs of debris or if any springs or other components...

  • Brakes Work Well but Wont Lock Up
If your brakes are working but do not lock up when you turn your brake controller all the way up, the most likely issue is that they simply need to be adjusted. So what you can do is adjust them with the Brake Adjustment Spoon # W80630. I have added a link to a video below that if you forward to about the 4:40 mark you can see how to adjust them.

  • Which Way Should Brake Adjustment Star Go to Tighten Brakes Up or Down
To tighten the brakes on trailer brake assemblies you want to unscrew the adjuster wheel if that makes sense Charles as that pushes the two shoes apart. So depending on which side the adjuster wheel is on between the two pieces of the adjuster it will vary which direction you would need to move the star. So you will want to look at the adjuster star wheel on the assembly and push it in the direction that will move it apart. In most cases it will be that you push it down to move the assemblies...

It sounds like you may just need to adjust the brake assemblies in question on your trailer. To adjust the brake shoes, you will access the brake adjuster from the back of the assembly. You will want to adjust it just until you can no longer turn the trailer wheels by hand, then back off about 10 clicks for the ideal placement. I have attached a video demonstration for you to check out. At the 4:35 mark in the video, you can watch how the brakes are adjusted. If this is not the issue,...

This is where you'll adjust the brakes using a brake adjustment tool # W80630. You'll need to get the trailer onto some jack stands so the brakes can be spun freely. Based on my research, your Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro E20BHS. The first thing it may be is just that you haven't traveled far enough yet with your trailer. As far as the brakes locking up goes, you probably have a brake that is adjusted too much and you need to back it off using a Brake Adjustment Spoon # W80630.
