Troubleshooting Locked Up Trailer Brakes Even When Unhooked From Battery
Question:
the breaks on my trailer are engaged all time and will not release even when I unhook the battery from the system. what would cause the breaks to stay engaged all the time

If the brakes are locked up even when there is no power being delivered to the brakes, the issue is mechanical and not electrical. If you have a breakaway kit installed, the breakaway pin may be removed and causing the brakes to be applied. Make sure the breakaway pin is in all the way and not causing the issue. I have attached a drawing of the wiring for a breakaway kit installation.
Check the brake assemblies out and look for any signs of debris or if any springs or other components are broken causing the brake pads to expand. If everything looks good you will want to make sure the brakes are adjusted properly. I have attached a link to a video that shows how to adjust the trailer brakes. You can use an adjustment spoon like part # W80630.
