Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I ordered these for my 1997 Jayco 1207 KB popup camper. I ordered item K71-723-01 to provide extra clearance for the tires. Everything shipped quickly! I ordered three of these tires and wheels. They are all great and fit perfectly.

by:

Fit perfectly. Thanx so much.

These wheels and tires still look new after a year. The trailer does not get moved often, but just the same, I am confident all will be well when I do move it.

by:

Order arrived on time and was exactly what I wanted.

by:

Incredibly good product and price. Excellent service.

by:

Always fast service , products are good

by:

Seem great so far! Bought them for a camper I built. Was planning on going from Indiana to Yellowstone last summer with them. But then COVID hit and National Parks closed. We have done some more local trips of 25-100 miles and worked great so far.

by:

Went up from 12" to 13" wheels and decided on these because of their speed rating (M 81 mph). Perfect fit onto existing hubs. 2500 miles from Florida to Nova Scotia, Canada at mostly 65 mph. No problems. Tires did not get excessively hot, could always touch with full palm.
Fast delivery from e-trailer.

by:

These tires are fantastic after 1 year and 2600 miles the tires still look brand new. I believe that these tires will last another year and 2600 more miles. For the last 15 years I have been getting around 1200 miles out of a set of tires, I love to fish so my trailer goes everywhere. yes I will buy these again.

  • Recommendation to Replace 155/80R13 Tires on Trailer
The 155/80R13 tire is a pretty odd size which is why you're having a lot of difficulty finding exact replacements. The closest option we have available is an ST175/80R13 like the excellent Kenda Loadstar # AM1ST76. It features a maximum load of 1,360 pounds at 50 psi and a speed rating of 81 mph. This tire will be taller by 1.2 inches and wider by 0.8 inches compared to what you currently have. Keep in mind that only half of this height difference (0.6 inch) will actually matter in terms...

  • Can a Jet Ski Trailer go From 5.30-12 Tire to a 175/80-13
The 5.30-12 tire size is 21.9 inches in diameter and has a section width of 5.6 inches. The 175/80-13 has a diameter of 24.1 inches and a section width of 7 inches. So basically as long as you have room between the frame and the inside of your current tire for 3.5 more inches, and have room for 1.5 more inches between the top of your current tire and the fender you should be good. For a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern rim and tire you would want the part # AM31985, for a 4 on 4 inch bolt...

Hey Mike, so we don't have ability here to mix and match wheel and tire combos that are mounted. We don't have ability to mount tires here either so if you find a wheel and tire combo that you need that we don't have pre-mounted the best option is to order them and have them mounted locally.

  • How to Pick Out a Replacement Trailer Tire for a Jayco Eagle Pop Up Camper Trailer
If you check the sidewall of the tires on the trailer currently there should be a size listed there that you would want to use. I attached a picture of what the size will look like. Once you figure out what size you have check out the link I attached that has links to all of the tire sizes we carry. Select your size and all of the correct sizes will be listed. Also there should be a plate or sticker up by the coupler of the trailer on the frame that will have the VIN and weight capacities...

  • Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM3S120 Recommendation to Replace P185/80-13
Since your current trailer tire size starts with the letter P that means it's a vehicle tire and shouldn't be used on a trailer. You'd want a trailer tire size that starts with ST like the # AM3S120 which is a tire size ST175/80D13. There isn't a larger size with a 4 lug bolt pattern so this would be your best option. It would only be .3 of an inch shorter than what you currently have.

  • Should I Stay With 13" Wheels Or Upgrade To 14 Wheels?
I will start by sating that the wheels/tires on the trailer you are looking at do look kind of undersized. So you definitely can stay with a 13" set up like the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10208 and Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 4 on 4 # AM20242, which will give you 1,660 pounds of capacity (the wheel is rated lower than the tire in this case). However, you need to have at least 3" of space from the top of the tire to the...

  • Can you Replace 15 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires With Smaller 13 Inch Wheels and Tires?
There are still a couple issues to consider when moving from a 15" wheel to a 13" wheel on your trailer. First you will need to ensure the smaller wheels will fit on your hub. If you know what hub you have you can verify it is rated for your size wheels. Otherwise you will need to measure the pilot hole size for the hub and if it is a braking hub you will need to measure to ensure the diameter of the brake drum will fit inside the smaller wheel. Also you will need to verify your trailer...

  • Does Going to Larger Trailer Tire Offer Benefits
Larger diameter wheel and tires do smooth out the ride quality a little bit and also offer higher weight capacities. Since they spin slower than smaller diameter tires they also would put slightly less wear and tear on hub and bearing components. That said it doesn't look like you have enough clearance for larger tires due to fender clearance(need minimum of 3 inches). So a Karrier wheel and tire like part # AM31994 which is a radial on a galvanized wheel that has the matching bolt pattern...

  • Replacement 4.80-12 Tires for Norther Tool Tag-Along Motorcycle Trailer
From what I found online, the Ultra-Tow tag-along trailer uses a 4.80-12 tire. Trailer tires will typically have a 65 mph speed rating at a minimum, so I don't know if the speed is limited by the tires used or by some other characteristic of the trailer itself. Northern Tool might be able to offer an explanation for this. The owner's manual for your trailer mentions the 45mph recommended speed limit, but doesn't provide any reasoning for that rather low speed limit. Later though, the manual...

We do have a nice selection of ST175/80D13 trailer tires available that are mounted on a wheel with a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. I recommend taking a look at the Kenda Loadstar # AM3S120 that features a maximum load of 1,360 pounds at 50 psi and an excellent speed rating of 81 mph. The bias ply tire is mounted to a steel wheel with an 8-spoke design and a nice white powder coat finish for a sleek appearance and rust resistance. • Compatibility of 13 Inch Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo for Trailer Currently Running 8 Inch Tires
It is true that 8 inch tires will have more revolutions than larger tires which will wear down the tires and bearings slightly faster. The biggest thing to consider in moving up tire sizes is the changes it makes to the trailer. It will raise the trailer higher off the ground, it will limit your clearance for your suspension to move properly, and most of the time the larger tires are also a different width which can also be an issue on some trailers. Moving from 8 inch to 13 inch is...

  • Recommended 175/80D13 Tire and Wheel w/ 4 on 4" Bolt Pattern For 4' x 8' Trailer
Most of the differences in the tire/wheel combinations you were looking at come down to the wheel. Out of the available options I recommend going with the # AM3S120 as the tire it comes with is rated to 81 MPH which'll be perfect for highway trips, and you won't have to worry about blow outs or other issues. This shares the same 4 on 4" bolt pattern as your current wheel/hub, so it'll be a direct replacement. It'll be a tad larger than what you have now, but is close enough in overall...

  • Size Difference Between 4.80-12 Tires and 175/80-13 Tires
A 4.80-12 trailer tire and wheel such as the Kenda # AM30630, when inflated will measure 20.7 inches in diameter and have a width of 4.9 inches. A 175/80-13 trailer tire and wheel will measure 24 inches in diameter and have a width of 6.6 inches so you do need to measure to ensure you have the necessary clearance. A great option for a 175/80-13 trailer tire and wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern is the Loadstar # AM3S130 which has a galvanized wheel or the Loadstar # AM3S120 which has...

You can stick with the wheels you have and get new tires the same size, see link. The tires we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour (unless otherwise noted on the tire). Bias ply tires are better for off-road types of applications. To go up to a larger wheel the next largest size is # AM20041.
