Does Going to Larger Trailer Tire Offer Benefits
Question:
Doing a makeover on a 5 x 10 pt wood floor carry on trailer from Lowes. Guessing it to be 10 years old by the DOT stamp on the tires. Looking to drive from Florida to Indiana so getting ready to switch from bias to radials. Any benefit in switching from a 13” rim to a 14 or 15” rims? I mean ride wise? Once I’m in Indy size won’t matter since it’s just a weekend project trailer Also when one says 2000lb axle not rated for 15” tires does that mean because one may be tempted to overload the trailer? or is the extra height itself potentially damaging to the axle with no load on it at all? Thanks a bunch

Larger diameter wheel and tires do smooth out the ride quality a little bit and also offer higher weight capacities. Since they spin slower than smaller diameter tires they also would put slightly less wear and tear on hub and bearing components.
That said it doesn't look like you have enough clearance for larger tires due to fender clearance(need minimum of 3 inches). So a Karrier wheel and tire like part # AM31994 which is a radial on a galvanized wheel that has the matching bolt pattern would be your best bet. Trailer tires do need to be replaced at 6 years as they tend to break down and fail at that point.
