V-19 Certified for safety and featuring exceptional strength and versatility, this universal adapter converts a fifth-wheel king pin to a gooseneck coupler. This allows you to tow your fifth-wheel trailer without a bulky fifth-wheel hitch. The Ranch Hitch from Andersen Manufacturing is easy to install, even for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

Measuring Your Truck and Trailer for the Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter

You can perform these steps to determine if the adapter will work for your fifth-wheel trailer.

  1. Back your truck into position as if you were hooking up your fifth-wheel trailer, making sure that the truck and trailer are level.
  2. Measure from the pin plate (the bottom of the pin box) down to the top of the ball in the bed of your truck.
  3. The measurement should fall between 11-3/4" and 14-3/4". (The adapter is 11-3/4" tall when fully compressed and 14-3/4" tall when fully extended.)

Additional Measurements

Five or six inches of clearance between the overhang of the trailer and siderails of your truck is necessary for safe operation.

Diagram of pin box showing where to measure length

Measuring for Pin Box Length

The Ranch Hitch adapter is designed for trailers with a standard or extended pin box up to 24" long (measured diagonally). To find this dimension, you should measure from the centerline of the bottom of the king pin into the back of the pin box as far as you can reach. You may not be able to reach the very back of the pin box itself because the top of it may extend into the trailer. In this case measure to where the pin box disappears into the trailer.

I returned it, because it was going to change the structural integrity of my 5th wheel camper. Did not use the product.

by:

Real fast shipping, and a competitive price. Easy to follow directions and simple installation. This is a great product.

by:

Recently purchased my first covert a ball hitch it arrived chuckle and installed in under an hour works well

by:

As with any Anderson product I have used, I'm very happy. Very well made products and great customer service

by:

High quality, heavy duty. I was hoping this was a more temporary mount if I decided to utilize the 5th wheel king pin. However, this is threaded on with 400lb torque and I had to tack weld the mount to the bottom of the king plate as there was no access to bolt through the pin box.

by:

I have had great success with this converter. Easy to install, I love the remote release cable. Ride is comfortable. Did not disappoint whatsoever.

by:

Seems to be a very well built product. Good price and shipped fast. Fairly simple to install, I recommend having a friend or two around to help tighten everything down. Also I preferred to bolt rather than weld ( unless you have a closed off pin box), you never know when you may need to go back to fifth wheel in a hurry.

How does collar system attach to king pin ? Thanks

Patrick B.

11/26/2013

There is a threaded collar that is fitted to the king pin. You would slide the coller up on the king pin. While holding the collar, you will take a split collet and fit that where the jaws normally grab the king pin. You will slide the threaded collar over the split collet and using either a pulley puller or Andersens hammer to seat the collar fully onto the split collet. I have added a pictorial of this portion of the instructions to the photo gallery and linked it here as well. The base of the adapter threads onto the collar and is tightened to ~1200 ft. lbs. The process for getting that much torque is outlined in the instructions and uses the included spanner wrench and a 4 foot cheater pipe. Finally, you will use either the inlcuded four Grade 8 bolts or four 1 inch tack welds to finish securing the adapter to the pin box. If you want to be able to remove adapter, make sure you can access the inside of the pin box so you can use the bolts vs. welds.

I have pulled my camping trailer approx. 300 hundred miles since I installed the adapter. It works great. Installation was pretty simple, the only difficult part was drilling the four holes thru my fifth wheel box. E-trailer service and shipping were great!

Received product 5-10-2017
Installed
on 5-11-2017
Gave a test run and seems good fella good and looks great. I like the 24000 and 6000 lbs feature think it is stronger of course.

by:

Works great! Used the Anderson Ultimate in the past and it worked great until I put a fuel tank in the truck. After that there wasn’t enough room for the Anderson, needed something different. Check spacing on several hitches but none allowed the room. The gooseneck adapter works as advertised and now have extra bed space for gear. Picked up the gooseneck safety chains also from another vendor just to add the extra safety margin in there. Adapter is easy to hook up and works great. Still have to climb in the bed to hook up safety chains but it does work. Also love the plastic pad between the ball and the hitch so I don’t have a greasy gooseneck ball to deal with.

As always, a great product from etrailer.com! This company is fantastic. Very helpful, with a wide selection of products and fast shipping. I have been a customer for a couple of years now, and always make this my first stop when looking for parts and products for my camper and trailer. You will not be disappointed in the service, and if you have any questions Renee will be glad to hunt down the answers for you. Thank you again etrailer.com!

by:

A friend and I installed the gooseneck adaptor with no trouble at all. The first time I pulled my trailer, I didn't think it was behind me. It made the pull so easy. Thanx so much.....

by:

Haven't installed yet, but is seems very well built and heavy duty. Shipping was fast and easy, no hassle

by:

Very easy to install had to use weld methed on king plate like very well would buy again. Price very good shipping good.

I have an Ultra-Fab trailair air ride kingpin system on my fifth wheel. Can the gooseneck adapter be installed on that type of system?

Etrailer Expert

Patrick B.

8/19/2013

According to Ultra-Fab, the Trailair pin boxes are not to be used with any kind of gooseneck adapter where the pin box is adapted to attach to a gooseneck ball. You can however adapt the truck to accept a 5th wheel hitch. Your best bet would be a fifth wheel hitch that anchors into a gooseneck like the Demco Recon, part DM8550045 or a Curt Fifth Wheel Adapter plate like C16210 or 16310.

Still holding up great, super gooseneck Ranch hitch

by:

I thought installation was very easy and it looks like a very well built and sturdy set up. I am actually installing it now and am very impressed

by:

It is so good to see that there is still good customer service, the product was just what I need and affordable as well.

Its works great I have since converted 2 more of my fifth wheel trailers to this goose neck hitch

by:

Works like charm. This is the best way to fifth wheel. No messing with a big heavy bridge in the bed of the truck.

by:

Product shipped/arrived timely from eTrailer; installation instructions provided by Anderson Manuf are very clear/easy to follow. Hitch is very easy to install. Attached to 30' fifth wheel, 11,000lbs tow weight and immediately pulled the trailer thru steep hill country without any hesitation. Pulling cattle trailers/heavy hay trailers, i know heavy duty hitches when i see them and this is a great product; HIGHLY recommended. Remote latching mechanism is a great feature; it too is very solid/secure

by:

5 star! Shipping was incredibly fast.

by:

The Ranch HItch 5th wheel adapter AM3100 was everything that we needed and more!! It fit perfectly and was a breeze to install. We will be pulling our "home" around the country when we retire. We didn't want to have the back of the truck to be full of "hitch" with no room for much else. The Gooseneck adapter is the perfect choice for us!! GREAT PRODUCT!!!

by:

That’s the second hitch I’ve purchased and have enjoyed them both. Have not had any complaints

by:

I recieved your shipment in seven days (FREE)
was able to install it myself in about 2 hours
with help to lift the 5th wheel down to floor level
to drill six holes mounted the spacers as per
instructions printed out. put the goose neck back
in place and the (easy) job was done !

by:

Installed on my fifth wheel. Easy to follow instructions, total time was about an hour. The lock is easy to place, install and use.
Be advised: if your king pin box is enclosed, you will need to weld this product on.

by:

I bought this adapter again because I had one on a previous trailer - and it worked great.

I like that it screws on rather than only bolting on. Then I really know it's secure.

  • Towing 5th Wheel Trailer w/2004 Ford F-350 with Gooseneck Hitch and 4 Wide-Spaced Holes Around Ball
It sounds like there used to be a Pull Rite hitch or some other brand hitch used in your 2004 Ford F-350. Even the Reese under bed mount is not that wide. But, I have a solution for you that will NOT require installing a different hitch or install kit or removing the gooseneck ball. In fact, the gooseneck ball will have to stay. That is because I recommend the Anderson Ranch Hitch # AM3100. I have included a link to a video on this adapter for you.

Here's the formula though if you wanted to be sure. (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the gooseneck ball to the truck cab B = Offset used, C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2.

The 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 should be no problem. On the flat bed you will need to make sure that the opening around the gooseneck ball is at least 6 inches in diameter or 6 inches square. Typically long bed trucks do not need any additional offset to allow them to make a sharp turn. Usually that is only needed on short bed trucks. • Which Provides Better Towing Experience, Fifth Wheel or Gooseneck
I prefer goosenecks hitches over fifth wheel hitches to be perfectly honest. They have higher capacities, leave the bed less cluttered, don't require removing anything that weighs hundreds of pounds when you want to use the bed, are easier to connect and disconnect, and since they have fewer moving parts they offer a smoother ride quality.
