Video Transcript for Andersen Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters AM3109 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number AM3109. These are the safety chains for a Ranch Hitch 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapters. Safety chains are going to be a necessary precaution when you are towing. They're going to attach to your Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter when installed on a 5th-Wheel trailer. They're going to work with both the straight and offset models. It's going to include everything you see on the table, so you're going to get the safety chain, and the mounting brackets, the hooks, all the necessary hardware for a complete installation. The product's made in the U.S.A.

The chain and the hooks are going to be made from a steel construction. They're going to have a nice chromate finish to resist rust and corrosion. It's going to be a Grade 70 chain that has a link diameter of 5/16 of an inch. They're going to have the forged steel hooks. These have the nice safety latch design to it, so it's going to prevent accidental disconnecting. When I took a measurement from the center of the bolt, I stretched the chain out from the center of the bolt to the center of the hook area.

That gave us a measurement of about 36 inches long, that's going to be the same on either side. These chains have been tested, and they meet the standards for up to 18,000 pounds when it comes to the capacity. The setup, simply clamps around the Ranch Hitch Coupler, and it's going to provide two chains that have the hooks at the ends. That simply attaches to the safety chain loops in the bed of your truck. To show you, on each side we're going to have the same components. You're going to have your chain, you're going to have your bolt, lock nut, and then your spacers.

You need to make sure that it goes through the link, the spacer goes on each side of that link in the chain, and then you tighten the lock nut all the way down. You're adapter portion is going to fit right inside that clamp. Very simple installation, and it's ready to go right out of the box. That's going to do it for today's review of part number AM3109. This is the safety chain kit for the Ranch Hitch 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter from Andersen. .

The collar is slightly loose after I tightened the bolts all the way. The spacers need a 1/16 of an inch shaved off on all of them then it would be tight. I will grind a little off two of the spacers and that should do the trick. That being said, these are a great product for the price and complement the ranch hand 8" offset hitch that I installed. Glad I purchased this!

Safety chains that adapt to what I needed to satisfy DOT

by:

product was as expected however, the boxes were not in the best of shape. One was for a work order and the other was for stock. Product good! Box, not so nice.

by:

Exactly what I needed and delivery was quick.

by:

These are heavy duty safety chains and coupler and mounted up with ease. Look great and it is nice to have that extra comfort of safety. Super fast shipping.
Thanks!!!

by:

There seems to be some question on the legal requirement for safety chains on a gooseneck adapted 5th wheel. However, I decided there was no question when it comes to safety. These chains were exactly what I needed and e-trailer's response time was exceptional.

Safety chains are something you hope you never need, but provide a level of comfort knowing you have them, just in case. Ive never questioned the wisdom of installing these chains and am quite happy with them.

by:

I am using this on my 5th wheel gooseneck adapter. Then I had to buy D rings to hook it up to my truck. For SAFETY I would have thought that the chains would have come with the gooseneck adapter.

etrailer is spot on!!

got them on the trailer - Only problem not really a problem but a hassle - the hooks are good the safety / clip would seem to be cheap quality

I ordered safety chains for my new RV gooseneck and it is even better product that I thought. Great support and on time delivery.

I just wanted to say that I looked at our receipts to see what it was that we bought from you. Yes those chains worked great and I left them on the goose neck of the RV for whoever buys it.

by:

If anyone is looking for a set of safety chains for a goose neck trailer I would highly recommend these, very heavy duty and looks like they will last forever very well made and are heavy duty. This company that I purchased this item from as far as I'm concerned is a great company, I just ordered a under the bed B/W 30,000 lb hitch and needed safety chains to go with the Rancher adapter kit I have. These ladies that I worked with in getting this thing put together are awesome and very knowledgeable. Will order form them again, excellent company to deal with, Highly recommended.

by:

Easy installation, was as described

by:

Great quality. Easy installation. One thing to note, if I remember correctly,(mine was installed several mo the ago) the directions and packing list both indicate a pin was sent. The collar has two stub ends that take place of said pin. Still a great design. Just worth mentioning.

by:

We got the safety chains and are very satisfied. Your customer service is great and shipping times are really fast!!!!

They work great!! Very heavy duty. I don’t worry about losing my trailer anymore.

by:

Product is great

by:

Ordered with Ranch Hitch Adapter; simple to install and a great added measure of security/safety. Very heavy duty parts throughout, no corners cut on design or manufacturing. Chains are HD as well and are long enough to hang on back of fifth wheel hitch housing to keep them out of the way when not in use.

by:

Very well made. A must for those living in states that require safety chains and for peace of mind any where you go. Very easy installation with just two wrenches needed. I installed these chains on a Ranch Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter.

by:

Even though e trailer was out of stock they were able complete and deliver my order on the original schedule delivery date...awesome job!
Thanks, now I can pull my fifth wheel safely with the new safety chains.

by:

Never used it. It did not fit on my gooseneck adapter

This works with Ranch Hitch 5th-wheel-to-gooseneck coupler adapters both the straight and offset models.

Gooseneck safety chain setI was very pleased with the service offered by etrailer. Their e-catalogue give me all the information I needed to make a decision about the product I was looking for. I received the safety chain set very quickly. I was amazed at the quality. This set is made specifically for my hitch so I'm not concerned about fit. The finish was excellent. I would like to see etrailer carry the ubolt set that these chains hook to which is installed in the bed of the truck. Not all hitches come with the ubolt set.

Well done etrailer.

  • Could Safety Chains for Ranch Hitch Coupler Adapter item # AM3109 Fit Gooseneck
As long as the outer diameter of the gooseneck hitch tube you have is 4-1/2 inches the # AM3109 would fit as that's the size it was designed to fit.

  • Is Tires Getting Pulled To the Side on Triple Axle Trailer Around Tight Turns Normal
What you are experiencing is tire scrubbing and is totally normal on a triple axle trailer. When you might a tight turn with a triple axle trailer some of the tires are going to be pulled to the side. There's really no way around that with a triple axle trailer. Make sure the tires are inflated to their max psi and you'll be good.

  • Will Using the Ranch Hitch Adapter Allow a Truck to Still Tow Regular Gooseneck Trailers
The Ranch Hitch # AM3100 secures to a 5th wheel trailer king pin and will allow you to tow a 5th wheel trailer with a gooseneck trailer hitch. So if all you have is a gooseneck trailer hitch and you wanted to pull a 5th wheel trailer, you would use this adapter. I also recommend safety chains # AM3109. Using the adapter does not modify the gooseneck hitch in the truck at all so you will be able to still tow gooseneck trailers as well. I have included a link to our FAQ article showing...

I believe you are referring to the pin box when you say all 5th wheels regarding the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/8" Offset for Short-Bed Trucks # AM3139. The answer to that is no, it is not; the # AM3139 is only designed to fit standard pin boxes, so it will not work with cushioned or rotating pin boxes. So it will only work with standard pin boxes, but so long as you have that, you're set. Additionally, for safety chains use Safety Chains for Ranch Hitch...

We don't carry a Reese adapter in that style but I do have a solution for you. Since your 2014 Ram is a short bed I suggest the Andersen # AM3139 adapter because it has an offset. • Do 5th Wheel Trailers Require the Use of Safety Chains
No, 5th wheel trailer connections do not require safety chains. Consumer 5th wheel applications connect to the truck the same way that big rigs connect to trailers and this is considered a secure enough connection to not require safety chains. Items that connect to a ball do require safety chains. So if you are using the Ranch Hitch adapter # AM3139 as an example, you would need safety chains.
