Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

I have not been on the road with these trailer tires, but am giving them an above average rating because of my other experiance with Kenda tires.

Work as they should. No complaints as of yet.

So far excellent..last tires lasted 15,000 mi. on Mini-Mate motorcycle camper over rough roads. These are going to Alaska and in load range C for gravel and bumps. Wheels have perfect paint and the 3 raised dots in rim recess to hold my new baby moon hubcaps. Popped them on new wheels/tires today and they fit over bearing buddies and seated more firmly and tightly with than I've experienced before with no rattle at all. The tires installed more easily because the center hole was smaller than many old sets of wheels and lug bolts aligned easily and exactly. The Kenda 6-ply have been good in past but was very pleased with last tires(CST) the rubber stayed soft and didn't crack. My spare is also Kenda 6-ply and hasn't shown cracks through 4 sets of tires on the trailer. The new ones look to be of same high quality. They arrived quickly and was able to install between work commitments. After trying to order same on other sites for over a week and get info as to plies/wheel type, etc., I stumbled on eTrailer site and 'bingo' all taken care of and perfectly!

Its now a year and they are at the wear bars! However, they traveled rough chip and seal and dirt and mud roads through Yukon and Alaska round trip from Colorado. They have 1200 miles on them..5000 more than the last sent went and on sandpaper roads to boot! I want another set of these as soon as they can be shipped!

These wheels and tires are ideal for highway use for long trips. They say right on tire "High Speed Trailer". With the trailer with no cargo, it weighs 530 lbs. With a 600 to 700 lb load I am at capacity with old tires (590 lbs each). These new tires are Load Range C vs my old tires Load Range B. My new tires are 745 lbs range each. They have two extra plies on the side wall. I also updated the springs with the 750 pound range 3 leaf version I bought also from etrailer. The key to success is to inspect the trailer each time you use it for small starting cracks in trailer frame, loose hardware, low pressure in tires, lights, etc.

The way that trailer tires are rated has changed over the years. Currently, the ply rating given to a tire doesnt necessarily reflect the number of layers or plies used to construct the tire. This tires rating is equal to the rating given to the rating a 6 ply tire under the old rating system.

by:

I'm getting 10,000 miles+ from these and like the fact that the installed rims have the 3 little nubs to accept moon discs on my motorcycle trailer. I pull through some nasty places and this keeps my 'Bearing Buddies' grease from picking up dirt. Got 2 sets wheels last time so am set for a while. On an Alaska 10,000 mile round-trip over bad chip and seal and horrible dirt these held up great. Be sure to inflate properly for your application as they come inflated to 60 lbs. (for boat trailers) and my little camper requires 27 lbs. when loaded. Test run them over your wetted driveway to see that you are running on the entire tread, not only the middle.

by:

Nice new tires and wheels for my 50 year old boat trailer that has been off the road for 22 years! Thank you for having what I needed in stock.

I havent had these on the road yet. So far I have only moved the trailer around my property. I expect to start road trips this summer. Thanks again for having what I needed.

Tires and wheels look great, time will tell how they hold up but they look like very good quality

Items delivered promptly less than a week. When I first saw the box I thought they had sent me a whole trailer lol. thats how well packed it was. Quality product for an unbelievable low price. I highly recommend doing business with this company

Everything is holding up great. No problems. I expect it to be on the last wheel I should have to purchase. And when the tires wear out this is where I will purchase their replacement.

by:

The wheel & tire were an exact fit of the old wheels. The powder coat will last many years. The wiring harness in the picture was also from Etrailer.com. It simply just plugged it in (I loved that part). That's so much easier than hard wiring a harness to a vehicle.

by:

This is the second set of these Kenda 6ply Hi Speed rated trailer tires I have purchased from etrailer.com.

They’re used on my Vintage 1988 Coleman Columbia Camper I pull to road racing permanent tracks throughout the US during the summer.

The first set lasted 5,000 miles. The team there are the best and the prices are amazing.

by:

It's a great tires and wheels mounted and ready to go on the trailer. fast shipping.

by:

These wheels were a great replacement for my "tag-a-long" trailer that I will pull behind my motorcycle. I dressed them up a little as you can see in the picture by adding little black dots to the rim. From a distance they look like regular 12" or 13" rims with holes in them.

by:

The review is more about etrailer process and customer service. They take pride in what they do. The tires that I recieved cost less than a $100. Judging by the packaging, you would think the box contained merchandize worth a $1,000. I had called them on couple occasions and the people I spoke with provided me with an excellent service.

by:

This site was great to purchase from! I have an older trailer for our small levy boat and wasn't even sure what size to choose. The information on this site was readily available, very detailed, easy to understand, and easy to find. This allowed me to select the wheel and tire combo that was a perfect match to my application giving me the confidence I needed to make my purchase.

I highly recommend this site for your trailer needs!

by:

It was for a spare tire. It's mounted on the trailer and luckily it has not been deployed.

by:

The tires are wearing extremely fast. So much so, that I will look to another brand for this season.

by:

AM30040. Top quality. Very satisfied.Load range C, very sturdy. Using this tire and wheel package on a converted boat trailer to utility trailer, used for hauling quads, riding mowers, and motorcycles.

by:

Great replacement wheels and tires... replaced for a kayak trailer with galvanized hubs for use in Saltwater... quick shipping and great followup!

by:

The last tires lasted 10,000 miles on my time-out trailer. I pull it with my Harley and the wife keeps it loaded heavy. These are the exact same tires so I expect the same results. Ordering was easy, shipped in a reasonable time. I am pleased.

by:

It's the right tire and wheel for a great price

by:

Very nice unit. Replaces old tire and rim on small boat trailer. Quick delivery and packaged very well. Thanks etrailer.

by:

Great durability (previous purchase) & great turn around on delivery time.

  • Can Kenda Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 AM30040 Tire & Wheel Replace 9 Inch Wheel
The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30040 may be a replacement tire and wheel for the original 9 inch wheel so long as a couple factors are within the proper specs. You'll need to check these as there is no info on a 1983 Cox trailer but so long as the 745 lb per-tire weight capacity is ok and you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern you can use the # AM30040. If you aren't sure of your wheel bolt pattern I have added a link below to a help...

  • Can a Load Range C Tire be Used Instead of a Load Range B Tire on a Trailer
First, make sure that you stay within the gross trailer weight capacity for your trailer. If that 200 pounds extra puts you over the gross trailer weight capacity then you will want to carry that extra weight in the vehicle. Going with a higher capacity tire will not increase the gross trailer weight capacity. With that said since you have a long way to go and such small tires, having a stronger tire in the same size would help to reduce the chance of anything happening to the tires. For...

This kit includes 4-on-4 hubs that work with trailer wheels from 8- to 12-inches diameter, like # AM30040, but note these wheels/tires are rated for 745-lbs each so two of them can handle 1490-lbs, not 2200-lbs as the axle can. Keep this in mind as you load the trailer up; the weakest link determines overall capacity. Your trailer frame may be rated for more or less weight than these other parts. The...

It also says you have a 4-ply tire which is Load Range B. The tire probably mentions a maximum weight capacity as well which is better to use than the ply rating. Look for this number and make sure the tires you get are rated or at least as much capacity as what you have. Looking at your picture...

  • Difference In Diameter Between an 8 Inch Wheel with Tire and a 15 Inch Wheel with Tire
The height difference between an 8 inch wheel with tire and a 15 inch wheel with tire will really depend on the tire size on the wheel. It is true that an 8 inch wheel is 3-1/2 inches smaller in diameter than a 15 inch wheel, but with tires on the wheels the difference will likely be greater than 3-1/2 inches. For example, the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 Inch Wheel # AM30040 when inflated has a diameter of 16.1 inches, while the Kenda ST205/75-15 Radial Trailer Tire with...

Increasing a trailer's tire size can offer some potential advantages but it can also cause issues. Using a wider and/or larger diameter tire can mean clearance issues within the fender wells and at the leaf springs. It is important to have enough clearance above the tire tread to allow for suspension travel; at least 3-inches but more is better. The most common reason folks want to use larger tires is to reduce the chances of a blowout, which is certainly a very good motivation! But there...

Trailer tire pressure ratings are different from vehicle tires. With trailer tires you want to always inflate them to the max psi rating when cold and as long as you aren't exceeding the weight capacity and speed rating any psi fluctuation will be totally fine and not need to be monitored. If you under-inflate them (sounds like you might have been) they will build heat up quickly which eventually leads to failures like blow outs. The # AM30000 should be ran at it's 60 psi rating. It...
