Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Theses are on a large ten trailer .only have 3500 miles on them . They wear good so far . They are an 8 ply tire .
The new rim look nice .

Kenda tires are outstanding - ordered again after a road puncture. Service provided by E-Trailer in the description and delivery of the product are also outstanding. Needed this for my camper quickly and etrailer delivered. etrailer is always my first stop for any trailer, RV, and towing equipment. THANK YOU ETRAILER.COM AND YOUR STAFF

by:

I recently put the tires on, but so far so good. I went to the website to replace the tires on my 2002 Coleman Bayside Elite. I had a tread separate on my way home from a trip to NH. The tires were only 2 years old, but I got duped by a local tire shop and overpaid for cheap Chinese tires. I was just about to order the same bias radial tire when I saw in the notes they weren't good for long trips on the highway. Our trips are usually at least 2 hrs one way all highway. I called the customer service line and spoke to Adam E., whom was very knowledgeable and helped to get me the Karrier Load Star radials. Thanks to his help, I feel much more secure pulling my trailer on the highway. I called on Monday and the tires were here by Thursday. With free shipping, you can't find a better deal. Thanks Adam and etrailer.com for the ease and piece of mind.

Needed load range D 13” rim, no body local has it , and nobody locally can get me one.
Using on boat trailer.
Thanks etrailer for having this tire!

by:

Tires arrived within a couple of days. All in good shape. Had them mounted and balanced at local tire shop. Just got home from first camping trip for tires. They rode and towed well. Very pleased!

had no problems ordering this product. I was shocked when it arrived the next day with free shipping. the tires were packed in a box so no chance of being damaged.
very satisficed with the people at etrailer job well done!

by:

I finally got the tires put on my boat trailer. They look good and have the load rating I was looking for. I was also happy for the fast and excellent service. I got just what I order. I will be getting one more for my spare.

So far I’ve been happy with my purchase. I’m impressed with the tires performance. One day I will be replacing my Spear tire with the same one, as was mention earlier.

Perfect match, good price

by:

Great price great service and great peo ple!!

by:

Price and quality are what I look for, etrailer pulled it off as usual. Kenda is known to be a good trailer tire.
I purchased the tires to replace the new cheaper tires that failed on a long trip ( didnt follow my own advice ) , lesson learned.

0 problems

by:

11,000 miles this summer in 2000 Bayside elite towed all over America. Proper inflation and keeping those hubs greased meant not one tire blow out the whole time. Tire tracks straight, runs cool, and is very quiet.

by:

Outstanding customer service! Communication was great and shooing was SUPER fast

Year later and the tires still look and perform great

by:

I was happy with the order and delivery time for my two camper trailer tires and I could not have been happier about the price. I have put a few hundred miles on them so far and all seems well. Ashley was helpful with my order and estimated delivery of the tires. I believe that , depending on future performance of these tires that I would purchase tires at etrailer again.

Karrier Kendra 185-80-13 radial tire for boat trailer spare , load range D. Excellent tire that matched stock tire for a Bass Tracker Classic XL only difference it is a load range D instead of a C. Weight is a max of 1725 lbs., better then C load range. Will definitely buy again if & when I need tires for my trailer!

by:

I've have very good success with the Kenda Karrier tires. Not one issue, holds pressure and no noticeable wear to date.

by:

Professional service over the phone. Quick delivery. Well packaged. The tires have a Kenda sticker on them but I cannot find “Kenda” printed on the tire itself anywhere. They are made it Taiwan. I plan on pulling them 1000 miles this weekend. Proof is in the pudding.

  • Is There an Issue Going from Load Range C tire to Load Range D
There's no issue going from a Load Range C tire to a Load Range D like with the # AM10208 that you referenced. Have additional Load Range/capacity really has no adverse affect on anything so this would not be an issue.

  • Availability of ST185/80-13 Radia and 5 on 4-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern
We have the tire size of ST185/80-13 in a radial like with the part # AM10208 but we don't have anything that's mounted on wheel in this construction. For a wheel then you could use the part # AM20245 but you would have to have it mounted locally as we don't have a way to do that here.

There are a number of options for trailer wheels with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern that will allow you to mount a 185/80-13 tire like the Kenda # AM10208, it really just depends on the style you want. I'll go ahead and list out the options for you so you can make a choice, and note these wheels do come with their own valve stem so you don't have to get that separately. - Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel - Galvanized Finish # AM20234 - Aluminum Viking Series Vor Trailer Wheel - Silver # AX02350545FPS

While we don't have the Westlake brand tire in the size you want of ST185/80R13 we do have the Kenda part # AM10208 which is a radial tire in this size and has the same Load Range of D. This would work great in place of the Westlake you have now.

  • Can A ST185/80R13 Trailer Tire Be Used To Replace A ST175/80R13 Trailer Tire?
You will more than likely be just fine replacing your 175/80R13 tires on your boat trailer with ST185/80R13 tires like the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10208 due to them being so close in size. The ST185/80R13 will only be about 1/2" taller and about 1/4" wider, so as long as you have at least 3-1/4" between the top of your current tire and the bottom of your fenders you will be just fine. There is a slight benefit in going with the larger tire, as...

  • Can Bias Trailer Tires Be Replaced with Radial Trailer Tires
Yes, as long as the actual tire size is the same, a radial ply tire like the Kenda ST185/80R13 # AM10208 will fit onto the wheel just the same as the bias alternative # AM1ST79 it's replacing. Radial trailer tires differ from bias models due to the 90 degree angle the cords run to the direction of travel (compared to a 32 degree angle on bias). This allows radials to flex a bit more for better ground contact and stability. The physical fit onto an existing wheel and trailer suspension...

Otherwise you'd need to have an aluminum wheel like the part # AM22323HWT mounted to a radial tire in the size you want like with the # AM10208.

  • Will Radial 185/80-13 Tires Put More Stress Than Bias Tires on Jayco Jay Feather Trailer
That's an interesting scenario because we normally recommend going with the radial-type tires or bias-type for highway usage. The radial (R13) have more flex in the sidewall which should give it better performance on the highway and help keep the heat down. If I were you I'd double check the psi rating on the sidewall. We have the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208 which is rated for 65 psi so it could be that the air isn't inflated to what the sidewall calls for -...
