Marine-grade, free-backing hydraulic drum brakes won't engage in reverse, even if your actuator is activated. Automotive-grade friction pads are long-lasting. Dacromet-coated backing plates resist rust. Fit 14-1/2" to 16-1/2" wheels.

Features:

  • Marine-grade hydraulic drum brake assemblies are great for boat trailers
    • Designed for use with surge-type trailer brake actuators
  • Free-backing design lets you back up without engaging the trailer brakes, even if the actuator is activated
    • Fall-away brake shoes only anchor on drums when brakes are engaged as trailer is moving forward
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gears allow for a more precise setting
  • Dacromet coating on backing plates offers superior corrosion resistance
    • Ideal for use on a boat or snowmobile trailer
    • Durable enough for saltwater applications
  • Stainless steel springs are durable and rustproof
  • Aluminum hydraulic cylinders resist rust
  • Single plunger design
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assemblies and off of the shoes
  • Left-hand (driver's-side) brake assembly and right-hand (passenger's-side) brake assembly included
    • Mounting bolts and hardware (BRKH12) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Specs:

  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO
  • Dimensions: 12" diameter x 2" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 5 bolt
  • Wheel size: 14-1/2", 15", 16" and 16-1/2"
  • Axle rating: 5,200 lbs, 6,000 lbs, and 7,000 lbs
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

Free-Backing Brake Assembly

Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.

Each of these free-backing hydraulic brake assemblies has a fall-away shoe, which provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward, but supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. During normal forward braking, the fall-away shoe expands to catch your brake drum. When driving in reverse, however, the fall-away shoe's extra spring will overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder. This keeps the leading edge from catching on the drum, so the shoe will not fully pivot into the drum. This exerts a smaller amount of friction, just enough to provide a minimal amount of braking when in reverse.

These trailer brake assemblies act as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for these brakes to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

I bought these new for less than the local brake materials shop quoted me to rebuild the old brakes. They have a nice coating that should resist rust for awhile. They seem to slow the trailer well. I would buy them again.

They are working like they should. I ran 800 miles in one day about a month ago, no worries on the trailer end. With the surge brake, just hit the truck brake a little harder and the trailer starts braking also.

by:

Very helpful staff. I did all 4 breaks and bearings complete. Glad I checked things out, seals were gone and one wheel had bearings that failed and I was lucky I made it home. Also put on new brake lines and master cylinder, all good now. Tnks

Purchase these units as part of my trailer overhaul. These bolt on in the original holes without a problem, very easy to install, added new kodiak brake lines and new drums, very pleased thus far with the product. like it's all one easy set up. I was going to buy new brakes and associate parts but after seeing these and the price I chose this route after than busting my knuckles trying to mess with springs and stuff. highly recommend

INSTALLED ON A CUSTOMER VEHICLE AND IT WORKED

by:

After the old backing plate was removed from my 20 year old boat trailer, the installation of the new backing plate and break assemble took less then one hour . The drum with the bearings installed slid right on .

by:

Simply Awesome. Thank You!!!

by:

Items were correct! Two boxes to ship the items. First box was damaged and required tape to keep the contents in tack. Second box was not damaged and contained two assembled backing plates. The right plate was missing parts (found in bottom of box) and the pin holding one of the shoes on was bent in two different directions. Had to straighten the pin in order to reassemble the plate and brakes.

I am sorry to hear that your item arrived missing some parts. I see that our customer service department has sent you out some replacements. They should be arriving some time this next coming week. Once you have received your replacement order, we would love to hear your feedback.

I Purchased hydraulic drum Brakes - Uni-servo backing plates form Lisa D at etrailer. I could not be more pleased. The items arrived when they were supposed to and were exactly what they were supposed to be. Lisa was very professional and knowledgeable, and followed up through email. I needed the items fast, and even after priority shipping, the cost was less than i could have found elsewhere. I will use etrailer again should the need arise.

I am very pleased with the brake system. It is installed and functioning very well on a heavy duty equipment trailer which is often called upon to haul in excess of 10,000

by:

Delivery was on time and correct application. Packing could be better as parts shifted and tore through box.

by:

Great on phone help….. OK was very impressed that the 2 ladies I talked with on 2 different calls really knew their STUFF. Very impressed and ordered on Sat. del. on Wed. with tracking sent to me. Will be back when I break these in with new salt water.

by:

Had an issue with a bolt loose in 1 of the brakes but entire assembly was quickly replaced by etrailer and it turned into a great experience.

by:

Time will tell, have had issues with them right away. Not sure if it is something I did wrong or faulty components. Have a scheduled service to determine cause of issue.

I can understand that you would want the brakes to work right away. Can you tell me more about the issues that you had with them? Was the service company able to determine what was going on?

by:

Great product easy installation very happy with product

by:

As far as I can tell, everything will work. The box holding the left & right backplates looked like it had been dropped. I checked the box and found that one of the plates springs had broken loose. My husband fixed it. Maybe they should put into bigger box.

Good quality product at a good price. Also very helpful

by:

Just one of the many satisfied customers with the company etrailer. I have used this on line site to refurbish my used boat trailers over the last 10 + years. During this pandemic I sort of let my trailer sit around and just wait until the end is near to react and make the trailer road worthy. After 3 years in out of salt water (mostly in) you might get this. After acquiring new brakes and drums from etrailer it’s back to the salt water again. Thanks for the essential workers at etrailer George, Savanna, and Carol. Cheers

by:

Good quality parts and materials and/or coatings that will resist the salt water corrosion. Easy swap in for the old parts. I was replacing a set where one brake pad was cracked (the new ones are bonded instead of riveted) and one where the hydraulic cylinder had blown out and drenched everything in brake fluid. Well worth the cost and well worth the additional cost for corrosion resistance if you launch in salt water.

by:

I was initially concerned about finding the right parts as the trailer was fairly old. etrailer had just what I needed. The website is so elegant. I was able to find the right parts quickly and with comparative options to make a final selection. The how-to videos are great. This made installation a little more comfortable. Especially when you do not perform this type of work every day. The parts were of high quality and are working as expected. I highly recommend etrailer for any of your trailer needs.

by:

First time order with etrailer.com and can't say enough about the experience. The website is top-notch, from excellent product description video presentations, easy order process and even visuals to provide shipping progress. Excellent assistance on product application and great follow-up customer service. Will not hesitate to order from etrailer in the future. Brakes are excellent quality and build and perfect fit.

by:

Easiest brake job I ever did! Complete assembly bolted to the trailer in the original position. No fussing around. Connected brake line, bled brakes and was rolling again. With free shipping, I couldn't go wrong.

by:

I received some great advice and help from Leeza in selecting the correct product for my needs. Without serial numbers or identifiable model numbers on my existing trailer parts, she was able to determine the correct parts for my particular trailer needs (on a 25 year old trailer.whose manufacturer is no longer in business).
I received the parts in the time span indicated upon ordering, and they fit perfectly.
A good experience all around.

by:

I have been using eTrailer for two years, Customer service is great, I could also easily reach technical support for issues with installation. They also respond to emails!

by:

The crew over etrailers work their butt off I ordered the wrong 12 inch backing plate with shoes it was already loaded on the truck they went out and pulled it from the truck and did not charge me and reordered and sent the right product it a ride fast

by:

The brake arrived kit sooner than I expected. Christen was very helpful with the order. I mounted them on the trailer this weekend and I will try them tomorrow

  • Solution for Manually Locking Out Brakes on Actuator With Electric Lockout
If you have an actuator like the Dexter # T4750620 you looked at, the only way to lockout the brakes is with the electric lockout.
