  The only difference between 7-way traditional and standard wiring is the colors of the wires. The functions and pin outs are the same so an adapter isn't needed. What you have is possibly a short between the two circuits due to exposed wire or maybe they were wired backwards. You'd want to go over the wiring of the 7-way and check for exposed wire or corrosion and fix as needed.
