2019 Outback Limited 3.6
Just completed
installation of Echo stealth hitch, Curt 4 way T connector, 4 to 7 way universal trailer brake controller kit, and Redarc Liberty brake controller.
This was a fun and very straight forward project. The Etrailer videos were awesome.
I took my time and knocked it out a couple of hours over 3 days. Im recently retired so no rush.
While awaiting shipment I poked hole through rubber grommet inside engine bay. I then pushed a 3ft length of 1/4" drip irrigation tubing through to pull future brake controller wires into cabin. I had ordered the Curt 4 way T connector earlier so instalked that as well. Videos were great and made finding plug n play connection super fast and easy.
Once parts arrived, I instalked Echo hitch and universal 7 way adapter kit. I picked up a torque wrench at Harbor Freight for $30 which worked great. I needed one for tightening tugs anyway so it was great timing.
I ran the 7 way wiring down passanger side under plastic shield. It was easier than anticipated and virtually invisible. Most videos show mounting inline fuses near battery. With my 3.6 the passabger side was wide open so I opted to mount the fuses there. This required a trip to Home Depot for an additional 14 ft of 10 guage wire. This was used to run hot 2 wires from 40amp/29amp fuses to battery($9.00). Turns out that the irrigation tubing is the exact size for covering anchor bolts on inline fuse. Probably dont need them but keeps everything safe from accidental arching is crossed.
I taped together the white trailer brake wire running from back and the 20 amp output black wire from 20 amp fuse to the piece of drip tubing I previously pushed through gromnet. I added a touch of white grease and it slid through grommet like butter.
The final day I instalked Redarc controller. Installation is fairly straight forward especially after knocking out the dirty parts of install.
Honestly the most troublesome part of the entire project was identifying the cold brake pedal wire. These wires are minute. The key is having the right tools which I did not. Purchase a hook probe circuit tester and save yourself all the frustration. I watched many videos and there were multiple answers as to which wire is the correct wire. Dont guess or take soneones advice, verify. A hook probe tester like the instalkers use is worth $20. I ended up dropoing by my local uhaul that does custom hitch instalkations. Base labor price $60 which was totally worth it at that point. I saved a lit of $ DIY so I had the pro identify and connect controller to proper brakewure activated when pedal is pressed. I had it all open for him so he only charged me $20. Thank the Lord he was an honest cool guy.
After completing instalkation and powering up system the Redarc had no lights whatsoever. I calked Redarc and they had me check for power at black wire on input side, all good. I then disconbected both sides of controller, multi rmwire side and control knob side. After reinstalling the blue led indicator light fired up. Everything is back in place and working great. I dont have our trailer yet, but purchased a 4 way and 7 way tester and all systems are ready for launch!
I ended up mounting the control knob onto the fuse cover lid on left dashboard. This was just easy and simple. Added some tacky strips to hold cover securly.
This was a fun project and etrailer made it super easy. Items were delivered quickly and great quality. etrailer is my go to stop for everything towing.

Helped to install the 7 way connetor, the only issue I had was my hitch bar was curved this off sets the 7 way plug but does not impair the use of the plug with the wireless brake controller. Love etrailer and the products they distribute.

by:

The most difficult part of installing this trailer wiring kit was removing all of the junk I accumulated in my rear compartment to access the connector harness.

Once I did it only took like 3 minutes to completely install and put the floor back in place.

It works flawlessly, but here's a little hint - do not allow your trailer 4-pin connector to be stored outside without a rubber insulating boot on ot to prevent corrosion or wasps from making a mud nest inside it. I use aluminum foil wrapped around in and dielectric grease.

Hope this helps.

Paula was a great help. Very pleasant to work with. Answered all my questions about these items plus break controllers, wiring, and adapters. She even gave me her direct call back. Said if I had any questions don't hesitate to call. Shipping was fast. Great company to work with. Thanks again.

by:

Package was placed inside box with hitch receiver. When I got it was opened and small screws and clamp were missing. Also the plate was bent from receiver bouncing around in the box. I made it work but was quite let down.

by:

Sorry Carol, I had to modify the long bracket in order for it to work on my 2020 Ford Edge Titanium.

by:

Great service made appointment at garage to have mechanic install new hitch on our 2015 nissan frontier pickup.Thank you very much for your service you gave me.Ian

by:

Strong and stable. I was doubtful that the single stainless steel worm gear clamp would provide a firm mount. Boy, was I wrong. Up against the square crossbar of the hitch and with the clamp properly tightened, the bracket is impressively stable. It holds the 4-pole flat wire connector at the perfect place. Away from road and trail hazards, but convenient to reach for safe, simple hook-up when coupling the trailer. Thick steel with a nice fit and finish.

by:

The only thing about the stuff I purchased from e-trailer that I did not like is the mounting brackets! I had to bend it 90 degrees to make it work. Please fix this issue. Unfortunately, some paint came off when bending it, so 12 months later it is starting to rust (see photo). The bracket that the plug sits in is sloppy so the plug usually falls out when I unplug or plug the trailer in. PLEASE FIX!

By the way, the trailer hitch and harness I purchased from e-trailer is AWESOME.

by:

At 6 1/2 inches, the "long" mounting bracket is too long. The 3 1/2 "short" bracket is too short. I needed 5 1/2 length, so I used a hacksaw to cut the longer bracket and drilled new holes. Easier than I expected, about 15-20 minutes work. I've attached before photos showing the fine previous workmanship, along after photos of my remount.

by:

Box is damage parts. Parts of the hitch broke through. There is some scratches and paint gloss. I haven’t taken a completely out of the box yet tomorrow I just installed and we’ll see if there’s any other damage.

by:

The bracket assembly was packaged inside a larger box containing the trailer hitch that I ordered. The hitch box was damaged and the bracket was missing on the original delivery. I called etrailer customer service and they sent replacements immediately. I would strongly suggest packing the smaller items in a separate box to eliminate this issue. The bracket met all expectations and was thicker then expected. Customer Service, Ordering, delivery, and communication were outstanding from etrailer.

No concerns, bracket is holding fine.

by:

The universal mounting bracket installed without a problem. My rounded hitch posed a slight problem for this model, though. I ended up placing a zip-tie to the backside of the bumper to try to keep it from falling down. Otherwise, it is still working great one year in even with deeper-than-average snow last winter.

Great idea, Adam! As Plato said, necessity is the mother of invention, and you definitely problem-solved on this one! Since your pictures show a 4-way and 7-way connector, you could also use the Curt Easy Mount Bracket for 2-inch hitches Item C58000. This slips over your Curt 2-inch receiver and does not require drilling, either. Thanks again for sharing!

by:

Extremely appreciative of the tech help I got from Phillip at etrailer
Knowledge was spot on with our vehicle and the products needed to install the hitch, wiring, and bracket.

by:

Be sure you have a square shaped hitch. Won't work well with round.

by:

Easy to install in area I choose that works best for my trailer.

by:

Good product. Installed it on 08 Odyssey Reese class lll trailer hitch. Make sure to get the 6.5" bracket when installing larger connectors such as 7 way in order to fit the wiring harness. I'm also impressed with the customer service.. very knowable, helpful and friendly. Looking forward doing business here again soon. Thanks Etrailer

by:

This heavy duty bracket was just what I needed to be able to attach my customer's 7-way trailer plug to the round tube hitch. I did need to put a 90 degree bend in this for proper placement. Came out looking great and very secure with the heavy duty clamp provided.

by:

Purchased this to support the receptacle in the 7-way ETBC7 kit for a 2010 Honda Odyssey. I was initially skeptical that it would grab securely onto a round hitch pipe (Hidden Hitch) but it does. In the picture, readers can see that I intentionally installed this 18136 bracket "upside down". There are two reasons: (1) Aftermarket hitch receivers ride fairly low on Odysseys and occasionally mine will scrape the road if there is a steep grade change. Not a big deal, but I did not want the ETBC7 receptacle to scrape the ground and be damaged. This way, the 18136 bracket might scrape, but the receptacle will be protected. (2) Mounting upside down also raises the ETBC7 about an inch, so that it is not hanging lower than the hitch receiver.

I also mounted the ETBC7's bracket "backwards". This sets the receptacle a tad inside the profile of the bumper, so that if a shopping cart or something hits the bumper it will be less likely to impact the receptacle.

Very pleased with this part, it's sturdier than it looks and gives the ETBC7 a solid platform when you can't or don't want to mount directly into the bumper of your vehicle.

by:

Works great. I had to cut it down to fit my Honda CRV with a grinder. After cutting it down, I recommend getting some black paint to keep it from rusting.

This mounting bracket is also available in a short length, part 18140.

by:

Great product and install.

by:

Product is well made. I like that it had the dimensions on your website. I checked my application and knew that the shorter version would be too short so I went with this one knowing it may be a little long. After I received it and checked it was a little too long so I made a bracket to clamp it on the tow bar. Everything worked out well and it very sturdy.

by:

I bought the long bracket since I planned on adding a couple of bends to it. The bracket is something like 12 ga. steel so I had a metal shop make the bends. The picture shows how it mounted on the 2-1/2 in. square tube crossmember. I was very pleased with the result. Just make sure you have adequate clearance for the square tube when you make the bends if you mount it this way. Otherwise you'll have to throw it away and start over.

by:

Great item - saved me from drilling directly into the hitch. The threaded clamp clicks out of the way to quickly feed the bulk of the wire through, then click it back into position and use a drill with socket attachment to tightly secure it. Rock solid install.

by:

This was really easy to put together and instal and took very little time to do.

  • Is It OK To Bend No-Drill Mounting Bracket 18136 To Clear Rear Bumper?
Absolutely! It is not uncommon to have to bend the Long No-Drill Mounting Bracket # 18136 to make it where you can mounting a 7-way connector. There is no issue with mounting the bracket vertically and bending it a bit to allow your 7-way connector mounting bracket to fit. I included a video of the # 18136 for you to take a look at.

This means that this adapter can remain at the back of your vehicle and you never have to remember where you put it. The adapter comes with a mounting bracket that when paired with the mounting...

The two self tapping screws included with the Reese Multi-Plug Wiring Harness part # 74682 will allow you to attach the trailer connector directly to your trailer hitch if needed but I don't really recommend this as you can weaked it and increase the chance of rust occurring. • Options for Storing 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Connector
Draw-Tite hitch # 76225 is an excellent choice for a clean installed appearance on your 2018 Dodge Journey. As for the 4-pole connector mount you have two ways to go. Some towers prefer to keep the 4-pole wiring tucked inside the vehicle except when they are actually pulling their trailer. The wisdom to this is that the 4-pole is then protected from corrosion from moisture and salt, and also from a potential hit from road debris. If you are towing all the time then stowing the 4-pole...
