Rolling Load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Covered Hand Winch Review DL17048

Jake: Hey guys, Jake here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at, and I'm going to show you how to install the Dutton-Lainson boat winch. It's going to be an enclosed boat winch which is going to help to preserve the mechanical parts on the inside. It's going to be able to pull your boat all the way up your trailer in case of emergency situation. You're going to have a nice heavy duty zinc coated hook that's going to be able to withstand the water that you'll be introduced to with it on a boat trailer.Your winch is going to have a 1,900 pound weight capacity, and it is on a nice label on the side in case you forget. The grip handle on the end of your nice long 9-1/2" arm is going to give you a good grip.

It's going to have these finger slots and a rubberized texture to give you a good grip to be able to turn that spool to be able to pull your boat on. The winch is going to have a hard plastic cover to cover those components up on the inside that will be susceptible to rain, dirt and other materials. Right now we have it in a forward orientation to pull our boat onto our trailer. To release it into the reverse orientation, you need to take some of the pressure off, flip that lever down and then reel it backwards. And you can see we have more than enough slack to be able unhook our boat and launch it. One thing I like about this boat winch is that it's going to be covered, whereas with this boat winch is going to be your standard boat winch, where you can see this would hurt a lot more if you we're walking up these stairs on our boat with bare feet or with sandals, if you hit your foot on this it's going to hurt a lot less than smashing your foot on this.

Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's go ahead and show you how we get it installed. Now we can set our winch in place. To be able to access the bolt holes, we're going to need to pull out our winch all the way. On the bottom you're going to have various different holes to be able to place your bolts where it matches the bolt pattern on your trailer. So we're going to be using this hole and this elongated slot here. We're going to take a bolt and a washer, slide it into our slot and down through the hole.

We can go ahead and thread our nuts on to the ends of our bolts. There is no hardware that comes with this kit, you can either reuse your old hardware or pick up new nuts and bolts. Now we can go ahead and tighten down our hardware. And we can go ahead and wind our strap back onto the spool. Now with the majority of our strap reeled in, we can go ahead and get it hooked to the front of our boat. Now take out the rest of the slack.

Well guys with everything tightened up, that's going to do it for our look and installation of the Dutton-Lainson boat winch.
