To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.
The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.
Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Speaker 1: So today, we're taking a look at the Dutton Lainson hand winch. This standard duty hand winch is designed for horizontal pulling applications. This is perfect for loading boats onto your trailer and maneuvering bulky equipment. It is designed to pull objects up to 1,200 pounds, so that is the capacity of the unit. If you look right here on the side of the winch where the handle is located, right underneath, where I have the handle now, let me rotate that out of the way, it says "Capacity 1,200 pounds". So if you're ever in a situation where you forget what the capacity is, you can look right here on the body of the winch and see it engraved. This unit does feature a free will mode that lets you manually control the strap pay out.
The ratchet pawl, which is located right here, locks the load in place when the handle stops cranking to prevent unintentional pay out. The ratchet can be flipped so you can crank the strap from the bottom of the reel. This is very easy to use, you'll notice that it has a nice long lever here, so that's like a thumb latch, that way you can easily flip it, and that allows your free spool mode. And then you can engage it, which allows you to bring in the strap using the handle. It does come with the fifteen foot long nylon strap with the foraged steel hook on it. It's very strong and durable, the strap is abrasion resistant, it's got the safety latch mechanism on there to prevent accidental disconnecting.
Now, the steel components on this winch feature the zinc tough plate finish to protect them from rust and corrosion. Also, the base has a nice powder coated finish on it to protect it from rust and corrosion. The handle is a nice design, it's a nice upgraded design, so it has this softer handle grip that's easier to operate when compared with standard winch handles. The product is made in the USA. Again, this unit has a capacity of 1,200 pounds.
The handle arm length, measuring from the center of where it mounts to the center of the hand grip is seven inches wrong. The reel hub diameter is 7/8 of an inch, and this unit features a gear ratio of 4.4 to 1. So that means for every 4.4 full turns of the handle, the hub will complete one full rotation. The base on the unit features a universal mount design, so you have the elongated holes, knotting hardware not included. The base measures three and 7/8 of an inch by five inches, and the overall measurements of the winch, I measured from very back to very front, that gives us a measurement of about seven and a half inches side to side. So outermost point from this side to the outermost part right here, which is the connection part for the handle, that measures about five and a half inches, and the overall height top to bottom is about five and a half inches.
Please note that winches are not to be used as hoists for lifting, supporting, or transporting people, or for loads over areas where people can be present. That's going to do it for today's look at the Dutton Lainson hand winch.
