Will Adding Higher Capacity Trailer Tires Allow Me to Carry More Weight on a Trailer  

Question:

trailer has 4-80-12 tires on it now. would like to have tires that would carry 2000 lb , or is that pushing it for the axels, will this size tire be sufficient for the wieght , also most Importantly is axels more inportant than wheels and Tires when hauling 2000Lb?

You have to go by the capacity of the axle even if the wheels and tires are rated for more weight. The opposite is also true, if the wheels are rated lower than the axle you have to go by their capacity. You always have to go by the lowest rated component in the system. To be able to carry more weight you would have to replace the axle and use wheels and tires rated the same as the new axle.

The highest capacity 4.80-12 tire we carry is a load range C that has a max capacity of 990 pounds, # AM10062. A pair of these on an axle will give you a 1,980 pound capacity. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.
