Video Transcript for Review of Lippert Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension - Bolt-On Shock Mount Kit - LC281255

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, I'm gonna take a look at the Lippert Bolt-On Shock kit with the heavy duty gas shocks for thirty-five hundred pound axles. Now this will instantly improve your ride with the suspension upgrade kit. It uses these heavy duty gas shocks to absorb any road shock and vibration and provide a more comfortable towing experience. Does include all the pieces here laid out on the table. Has the two upper mounting brackets, the two lower mounting tie plates, the four U-bolts with the installation hardware, the two gas shocks with the mounting hardware for the shocks.

Now this is a very easy bolt-on installation. These included tie plates and U-bolts will replace your existing hardware. The upper brackets right here is what will mount on your trailer frame with the included self-tapping screws and the shocks will attach to the tie plates on the bottom and to the upper brackets to help dampen movement of your axle. They do have a nice enamel finish to resist corrosion. A few specs on this, the application.

This is for a leaf spring suspension system on a two-and-three eighths-inch diameter, thirty-five hundred pound overslung axle. Now the minimum clearance between the inside of the tire and the I-beam flange is four inches. The shock length when it's fully extended is 13-and-a-half inches and when it's fully compressed is eight-and-five eighths inches. But that should do it for the review on this Lippert Bolt-on Shock kit with the heavy duty gas shocks for a thirty-five hundred pound axle..

My small dumping trailer was bouncing and swaying all over the place. After installing this shock kit, it follows along like a dream. A more than worthwhile investment. Easy to install, great customer service. Thanks!!!

Not a trailer, but...
We needed a set
of shocks for a three-wheeled motorcycle truck conversion for our resort/farm in upper Thailand. I had to pack it in my luggage for the trip over. The vehicle came with no shocks on the back axle and the ride was really bad. This kit, with a bit of modification, really did the job and the ride is now significantly better in terms of smoothness and handling. Shocks were a bit long, but it worked out OK.

I ordered two shock kits for a 3500 axle. One kit was complete with the right parts, the other kit had the rite parts except for the plates that go under the springs, the ones in this kit were for a larger axle kit. If I can't have those plates sent I will return the whole kit. I only need the plates that go under the springs. It would be nice to have instructions of some sort with the size of drill bit for the self threaded bolts. I think this kits are made very cheap with no respect for those installing their kits. I will not reccomend them to anyone

Thank you for reaching out and letting us know about the missing pieces. I see our customer service team has gotten those parts in the mail and shipped!

Ordered this kit and received it in a couple of days. Install was straight forward. First side took about 3 hours due to time spent measuring and laying it out to make sure the shock wouldn't over compress or extend. Second side took about an hour. The U bolts in the photos are not the ones supplied in the kit. These were installed prior with the lowering block. U bolts in the kit are standard length.

Very good product so far. Have had them on for nearly a year, maybe 2000 miles on them. We do have an anti sway bar on our 180bh sportsman classic but no distribution hitch. I chose to put bags under our 1500 EcoDiesel. So the sway is controlled by the anti sway bar but we still have a considerable amount of what I call role in the camper. Top to bottom the camper would lean side to side with our Texas panhandle winds. So these shocks have nearly eliminated the role. I did have to weld the brackets on the frame rather drilling and bolting. Not sure if the universal kit isn’t universal or due to the fact I did and axle flip on our camper caused this issue. Either way very glad I got them, doing what they are supposed to do. Thanks e trailer.

Doing good still, pulled camper from Amarillo Texas thru Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama on our way to Disney world, then back they Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas for vacation last year. We put about 4000 miles on the camper and shocks still doing what they are supposed to do, controlling the role.

Mediocre hardware, okay shocks, upper shock brackets are worthless.

I installed this kit on a single axle, spring under suspension, travel trailer. Ubolts were barely long enough and once torqued, there is only a couple threads showing outside the nuts.

The upper brackets are designed to be used on a box or c-channel frame. Since my trailer has an i-bean frame I had to have custom upper brackets fabricated. Even if the brackets included would have worked they would have required some work as they had welding splatter all over them and the welds didn't look too be the highest quality.

by:

Product:
First up - "Made in China"
- just need to expect that kind of production. HOWEVER, the welds on the product looked very good-good penetration, etc. Heavy gauge steel, like you'd want; very good. U-bolts and hardware look appropriate for the task; cadmium coated and fine thread for good torque.

Brackets are not finished to a high aesthetic level (paint doesn't fully cover, welding splatter painted over, etc.), but hey, it's UNDER the trailer. Some Rustoleum takes care of the paint... Shocks look and feel "ehh" - serviceable. We'll see how it works. Fully anticipate replacing them with higher-end shocks some time down the road at a later date. No instructions in box; lots of instructions on the inter-web. That's the "made in China" part... But, the good side of that is, a lot of stuff for not much money to solve a specific problem out of the box, which SHOULD be fairly simple. I will likely weld the top plate in place instead of using the included, self tapping, plated screws (they look adequate as well, but I like welding and it doesn't loosen-ever).

This is going on a 5 x 10 utility trailer with some air bags as an "upgrade" to carry lighter, fragile loads when I want to.
Will update when I finish installation.

Have a 2016 Jayco Whitehawk Travel trailer. Because of our wonderful roads in Pa., chucking was a big problem with this unit. Has Lippert Wide Stance axels and the shock kit is the only thing available at this time to tame this bucking bronco. I installed them in driveway, 1 set on each axel. Checked the angle of the shocks and they are placed at a 39 degree angle because of the wide stance axels (max angle on shock is 45 degrees). Went on a 150 mile trip and what a difference. It is pleasurable to pull this RV now even when hitting these dips in road at 70MPH. I am pleased dealing with etrailer. Have purchased several items from them and have had wonderful service from them. Keep-up the good work guys and thanks for being a reputable Co. to deal with. Sam

by:

Installed the shock kit at pulled the trailer across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota to through the Bad Lands all using back roads to see the country. The trailer followed smoothly and kept things inside in place. A great install to really improve the pull and control on back rough roads.

I am only posting this because you asked. I consider this a loss and just move on. My shocks blew out on the railroad tracks in Dodge City Kansas 1000 miles from home. I was on a trip to the west coast from TN. After I had returned home the warranty was over. I bought better shocks. The mount kit was ok, so far. My new shocks cost $83 delivered.

by:

Product arrived on time, with free shipping as compared to other vendors who charge more than $100 for shipping. Had to modify/ cut one edge of the upper shock mount to fit my Lippert frame (2018 Grand Design Imagine 2800bh). Straighforward installation, only issue is the kit comes with 8 self- tapping bolts ( need 5 bolts per upper mount). Definitely will order from Etrailer again.

by:

doesnt fit on the frame of my trailer as it is an I beam frame , now i have to get a shop to weld the top shock mounts to the frame , cost more for the welding than i paid for the shocks

by:

the four shocks added great stability to my trailer. They help eliminate sway and trailer hopping not to mention shaking the stuffing out of the trailer.

by:

Shocks made a huge difference in the bounce while towing the trailer. Very worthwhile purchase and installation. I printed the installation instructions from your web site because the instructions included were worthless.

by:

What a difference the trainer road so smoothly it was like it wasn't back there. Shocks and the kit that came with it are phenomenal. It handly much better.

by:

Shocks work great, travel trailer tows much smoother (sent picture after installation)

The product specs. listed on your web site were lacking exact enginering specs. According to the product delivered.
The fact that your product delivered is workable, does not excuse the fact that the web site description was vague at best.
Need extra steel to make your product work, was at the steel store this morning and could have purchased what was needed then.
Now need to make another 100 mile round trip to make the job good.

by:

Pleased with my purchase, installation was smooth - thanks!

All items received as ordered. Have not installed yet.

  • Shock Kit for Trailer with 2-3/8 inch Diameter Axle that is Overslung
The Lippert shock kit part # LC281255 is designed to fit 3,500 lb trailer axles that are 2-3/8 inch in diameter and are overslung like it sounds like you have so this will fit and work great. Since you will be off-roading this will do a great job smoothing out the ride quality of the trailer as you are in rougher terrain.

Lippert, which manufactures about 90-percent of the trailer fames throughout the RV industry, offers two bolt-on kits that work with both slipper springs and double-eye springs. Their kit # LC281281 fits 3-inch diameter axles. Kit # LC281255 fits 2-3/8-inch diameter axles. Both are...

By moving the leaf springs atop the axle tube, you'll gain the diameter of the axle trube plus the thickness of the spring pack as a height increase.
