I have a 3500# axle what grade bolts can I use for the leaf and shackle bolt

Hey Corey,

Bolt grades for leaf spring suspensions can range from grade 5 to grade 8, with the consensus being that grade 8 is the most preferred. For a 3,500lb axle the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut # TRFA73Z916DLNZ would be a compatible replacement. When removing the old bolt and installing the new bolt I recommend using a second wrench to make sure the head of the bolt doesn't spin as these have splines to help grip the bolt hole.

There is no specific torque rating for shackle bolts. Basically for the middle bolt there should be enough free play in the shackles to allow them to move. Tightening the shackle bolts too much will squeeze the shackle straps against the leaf springs…

The shackles of the Dexter Heavy Duty Suspension Upgrade Kit #K71-358-00 are zinc coated but the bolts are not. For zinc coated bolts as well you'd want the #TRFA73Z916DLNZ.

Because of its Zinc finish, the #TRFA73Z916DLNZ shackle bolt would definitely do a better job resisting corrosion than the #166081 bolt with its raw steel finish.
