Video Transcript for Brophy Chrome 50mm Trailer Hitch Ball Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this Brophy hitch ball, so it's gonna go on your ball mount to help you tow a trailer. Let's check it out. This is gonna go with your ball mount. We're gonna set it through there. Make sure you measure.

And it has an inch diameter here on the shank of the ball, (shank clanking) so that'll fit right in there. You're gonna make sure you have the appropriate ball for the ball mount. On the other side, we'll have a lock washer and a nut. Now, I'm just gonna do it to hand-tight because this is demonstration purposes. You definitely wanna tighten yours way down.

You wanna give it to the proper torque specifications before you go towing a trailer. To help you tighten down the ball, there's these flat spots on the side that a wrench can fit on. That way, you can use a torque wrench to finalize and torque the nut on the bottom. You can have a gross trailer weight rating of 8,000 pounds and a tongue weight rating of 800 pounds, so keep that in mind with what you're towing. And also keep in mind, if the ball mount doesn't line up with that.

So if the max gross trailer weight rating on the ball mount is 6,000, go by that, whatever has the least number. You don't want to stress out the whole system you got set up. The ball's got a chrome-plated finish on it, so it's not gonna rust or corrode if you leave it on the back of your vehicle all the time. The elements aren't gonna get to it. It might get scratched up a little bit when you load the coupler on there and actually tow the trailer, but that just happens when you use them.

Overall, I do think this is a good option for your ball mount. Make sure that you check your coupler on your trailer, that you need a two-inch ball, and then also, measure the diameter of the hole on your ball mount to make sure this is gonna fit and it's one inch. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope this helps.

50mm ball with 1" shank is kind of hard to find. I'm glad etrailer could provide it. I was hoping that the brand C.R. Brophy Machine Works, Inc. of Clackamas OR and Germantown TN was an indicator that the hitch ball would be Made in USA but unfortunately it is not - it's made in China like everything else.

Does the job!

by:

Perfect for my euro style trailer. Awes ome!

by:

Excellent quality, fast shipping. Finding a metric ball for our international application was a bit difficult. We knew etrailer was the place to go for all things "trailer" related. Very happy with the purchase!

by:

All companies should be ran like Etrailers,
I
needed a 50mm ball, 1 7/8 to small 2" to big...for my car hauler.
Etrailers received the 50mm on Monday, shipped it out the same day and I received it this Thursday morning.

Guess what, when calling you actually have a person on the other line... I'd like to give a special thanks to Shery T and Chris.

etrailer is great to get a whole bunch of unusual size parts. I have a European moto trailer that I picked up in Germany while I was stationed there and it takes a 50mm ball. I needed another ball and this was perfect.
I also got a wiring converter for the euro style wiring many years ago and it's still holding up.

A 2" ball is .8mm too large *facepalm*

by:

Works as any ball should.

by:

Product as stated, excellent service and fast shipping. I'm stationed in Germany (APO AE address) and the item was shipped via USPS Priority Mail. I already had a class 3 6,000 lb U.S. style hitch, so the item 1 inch diameter shank fit perfect in the 1 inch hole that is on the hitch. The ball is 50mm so it is a perfect fit for all of the European trailers. Now all I need is an adapter from the 7 pin U.S. that is on my U.S. Spec 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee to go to the 13 pin EU plug for European trailers. A guy that I work with has already made one for his Jeep, so I'm waiting for him to make me one.
Very satisfied with the etrailer.com and would buy from again.
Thanks,
Jeff

Works; stationed in Germany and needed a euro size hitch to work with my Thule European bike rack... this along with a euro to US electric adapter I picked up online and I had everything needed to transport our two electric bikes ... thanks

by:

I have a german trailer and we replaced the whole coupling system. It was supposed to have a regular North American 2" coupler. But it had the Euro one.

It is really hard to find a 50CM ball in the US that has an 8k tow rating. This one worked like a charm.

My only caveat is that when I called eTrailer customer service to ask if they had a European sized 2" ball they didn't know what I was talking about. I figured it out on my own by looking at another online retailer in UK.

But it shipped relatively quickly (for 2020) and it worked perfectly.

by:

Fast delivery. Great service.

by:

I have not used it yet but it looks nice, threads are all good, was easy to install on the draw bar.

by:

Outstanding hard to find 50 mm hitch ball. This ball is pretty much a European standard for smallish travel trailers like the Hymer or Eriba .
etrailer was the only provider to offer 50mm balls and were absolutely helpful with the order.
etrailer are pros, I recommend them to all U.S. Veterans ....you won’t be disappointed!
Semper Fidelis!

by:

hard to find size for euro trailer but US hitch! very happy with it

by:

Hard to find size for a European trailer; quick shipping.

by:

Very fast shipping, good packaging and works beautifully with our hitch mount Thule bike carrier that we ordered from Germany.

by:

We specialize in supporting the sailplane and soaring community. Unfortunately, the sport is dominated by European manufacturers and a lot of the sailplane trailers and peripheral equipment use metric components. The 50mm Hitch Ball allows our customers to avoid changing they trailer hitches to a 2 inch hitch ball as well as allow them to use sailplane towbars without changing out the standard couplers that come with them.

by:

Great product. I have a European trailer which requires a 50mm hitch ball. Etrailer was the only company I found in the USA which offered a 50mm hitch ball. I just returned from a 2,500 mile trip with no issues with this product. I highly recommend Etrailer for quality products.

by:

After trying to find a metric hitch ball locally I found Etrailer.com.

the 50 mil ball has worked perfectly for the year and the simplicity of getting it from Etrailers.com made for a pleasant transaction.

by:

I was a little skeptical at first ordering a 50mm ball, but it fit perfectly. I had previously used a 1 7/8 ball, but it had a bit of movement. Nice bright chrome ball.

by:

Perfect fit for our BMW X5 and Thule bike rack in Germany

by:

Excellent product and a perfect fit for my Trailer Metric Hitch Coupler, I love the 1" diameter Shank instead of the original 3/4" with spacer

by:

what i needed for a european trailer! hard to find. forcing a 1 7/8 or 2" ball onto a european 50mm is an accident waiting to happen, get the correct size!

by:

This ball is of good quality as expected, but most important it solved a problem for me, finding a ball here in the USA in the 50 mm size which is common in Europe but almost unknown here. (it is a tiny bit smaller than the common 2" which will not fit the trailer I own!

by:

It is a very good quality product and the proper choice for 50mm European type couplers. This was the only place I could find this size!

by:

Metric ball for those trailers from Europe. It's does the trick !

  • Can a Trailer With a 50MM Coupler Be Safely Towed With a 1-7/8" Hitch Ball?
You should never use a hitch ball which does not match the coupler size. You will need to source a 50mm Hitch Ball # EH53C-C to safely tow your camper. While some others may have been able to tow a trailer which has a 50mm coupler with a 1-7/8" hitch ball if it had slipped off the ball due to a bump in the road they could then be sued for negligence for any damages caused by the incident since they used a product not specified by the manufacturer.

  • What Hitch Ball Size Do They Use in Europe
We currently carry four different size hitch balls which are 1-7/8", 50mm, 2", and 2-5/16". The most common hitch ball size in Europe is 50mm for which you can use part # 63912 if you need a 3/4" diameter shank or part # EH53C-C if you need a 1" diameter shank. In order to be sure you are using the correct size hitch ball you will want to look at the top of the trailer coupler as it will be stamped into this location.

After researching with Tow Ready, I found out that they do not have a 50mm ball option for the Tow Ready Interchangeable Hitch Ball Set, like # 63803. However, I have a solution for you. The Brophy 50MM Hitch Ball, # EH53C-C, can either be installed in your current ball mount or you may want to purchase a second ball mount to mount the 50MM ball. The ball has a shank that measures 1 inch in diameter and 2-1/8 inches long. This will allow you to switch ball mounts in and out with out...

  • 50mm Trailer Hitch Ball for European Style Bike Rack
Based on some quick research it appears your Atera Stada DL is a fit for a 50mm hitch ball more common in Europe. We do have the Brophy 50mm Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter x 2-1/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 8K # EH53C-C. The 50mm hitch ball is 1.9685 inches so it is between the 2 inch ball and the 1-7/8 inch size so that is most likely your fit issue.

If you're just looking for a ball mount with 50mm European hitch ball then we can help. The ball mount I recommend is the Curt Ball Mount for 2" Hitches part # D-28. It has an extended length shank so it will clear the spare tire. Then you can use the 50MM Hitch Ball part # EH53C-C for the connection to the rack.

In Europe they usually use a 50mm ball such as # EH53C-C. The wiring is a little more difficult but we can help. You can use the 4-Way wiring already on your 2012 GMC Acadia but you will need to separate out the combined turn signal and brake light circuits. For that I recommend Curt converter # C56196. Then you would just need a European vehicle side trailer connector obtained locally to match what the trailer requires. Please note that you will likely need to split the running light circuit...

  • Recommendation for a 50mm Ball to Use with European Thule Bike Rack
The 50mm ball size is probably the most common across the pond so I am certain your European EasyFold fits that size. The US version, # TH903202, just fits into a 1-1/4 or 2 inch hitch receiver so the 50mm ball doesn't come up much. For a 50mm ball I recommend # 63912 since it costs a little less than the Brophy but you could use # EH53C-C as well.

  • Ball Mount and 50mm Hitch Ball to Allow Use of European Ball-Mounted Bike Carrier
The ball mount you purchased was part C45572 and this is for a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch. This ball mount has an integrated 2-inch hitch ball that cannot be removed and this is why it is incompatible with the towing style bike rack that I believe you have. Towing racks can either mount on the shank of the ball mount, like racks # S64664 and # C18013 or they can be like yours, which uses a hitch ball as a "bolt" to secure the rack to the ball mount. We do offer 50mm hitch balls, shown on...
