Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch

This compact, standard-duty trailer winch lets you pull cars, trucks, mini-vans, and other vehicles onto your trailer. You can mount the winch directly to your trailer deck or front rail with the included mounting plate. The side-mounted power unit and rotating gearbox allow the winch to fit easily into most custom cabinets or boxes. And it includes a hand-held remote, wire rope, roller fairlead, and a free-spooling clutch.

Heavy-Duty, 1.87-Horsepower Motor

Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch Motor

This winch features a 1.87-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 5,800 lbs of line pull. The permanent magnet motor offers the same line-pulling power and speed as a series-wound motor of comparable size, but it's lighter and uses less current. The motor is constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing, copper battery terminals, and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 450-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP67 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and zinc-plated hardware are corrosion resistant.

Bulldog Winch Remote plug

There is a rubber-sealed, weatherproof attachment port on the power unit for the remote control. An integrated rubber cap lets you cover the port when it's not in use.

Free-Spooling Clutch

Bulldog Winch Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply rotate the handle to the position indicated by the stick figure icon on the label. To reengage the clutch, rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the vehicle icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains. An internal spring-loaded pin locks it into or out of gear when the handle is turned.

The gearbox can be rotated in 30-degree increments to 12 different positions to ensure that you can easily access the clutch handle no matter where the winch is mounted. This is great for installation in a custom cabinet or box where space is limited.

The chrome-plated clutch handle is stylish and weather resistant. The steel gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a rust-resistant black powder coat finish.

Automatic, Load-Holding Mechanical Brake

Bulldog Winch Mechanical Brake

The automatic mechanical brake securely holds a load and prevents unintentional payout (or creep). A large spring coil contracts when the winch is in gear and the drum is winding in. When the winch stops, the load starts to pull and the spring expands to press against the spring chamber. The pressure of the spring on the wall of the spring chamber creates resistance to stop the drum from rotating outward. At maximum pressure the brake holds 100 percent of the load.

The friction created when the spring is pressing against the spring chamber creates heat. That heat is quickly dispersed away from the motor shaft and through the gearbox. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Weather-Resistant Hand-Held Remote

Bulldog Winch Hand-Held Remote

The hand-held remote has a 20' lead and in/out rocker switch so you can control your winch from the back of your trailer. The rocker switch is sealed and water resistant so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

The wireless remote kit (BDW20156 - sold separately) lets you operate the winch from up to 100' away.

Wire Rope

Bulldog Winch Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that is zinc-plated to resist abrasions and withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. It includes a spring-loaded tensioner that ensures the rope correctly spools onto the drum. A rock bag (BDW20048 - sold separately) is recommended for added protection. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back if it breaks by forcing it to the ground.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is also included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook.

Steel Hook

The removable clevis hook is constructed of high-strength forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. The rollers have a silver-zinc-plated finish that is tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with zinc-plated hardware.

Rugged Construction

Bulldog Winch Winch Body

The winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The motor housing and gearbox are made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel. The contactor is sealed to keep water out, and the power unit is made of heavy-duty yet lightweight plastic. The steel tie bars and side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

This versatile winch can be mounted to your trailer in several different ways. You can bolt the included plate onto the deck of your trailer and attach the winch and fairlead. Counter-sunk bolt holes in the mounting plate ensure that the hex heads of the included bolts don't protrude above the trailer's flat surface. This is the easiest method and does not require welding, but it does leave a footprint on your deck.

Bulldog Winch Winch Installation

You can mount the plate to the front rail of your trailer. This method elevates the winch so it's easy to reach and frees up valuable space on your deck, but will require welding the plate to the rail. You can also weld the plate to the front frame of the trailer so that the winch sits at at deck level without using up space on the deck.

The compact, low-profile design allows the winch to easily fit into most custom cabinets or boxes. This method keeps the winch out of the elements and keeps it hidden. Many cabinets and boxes can even be locked to protect the winch from would-be thieves. You can also install a dedicated battery inside or near the cabinet to power the winch. This prevents the winch from putting a strain on your vehicle's battery, and it eliminates the need to run a power lead all the way to the front of your truck.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)

2nd Layer4,99013
3rd Layer4,28021
4th Layer3,73030
5th Layer3,31040
6th Layer2,96152-1/2
7th Layer2,65955

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate trailer winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with an 5,800-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 3,867 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface58,000
5 (3°)38,686
10 (6°)29,116

30 (17°)15,138
50 (26°)10,788
70 (35°)8,874
100 (45°)7,482
Rolling Load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20028 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to the vehicle you are pulling with a bow shackle (BDW20020 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Just installed yesterday. Nice appearance and very compact. Smaller foot print than the winch plate on my trailer. It was nice to have the mounting hardware and mounting plate included with the winch.

Pulled 20’ of cable out and powered it in. Motor is whisper quiet. I like the 20’ remote cable which gets me to the back end of my 20’ trailer deck easily.

by:

My winch is mounted on a pedestal welded to the tongue of an open trailer. I power the winch with a 12v marine battery mounted in a watertight box and a small solar charger. The winch pulls a 3000-pound car onto a trailer with ease.

by:

Installed into my covered car trailer. Had a little trouble figuring out how to connect the battery cable on my 2016 Silverado, other than that, very simple to set up and operate. Now I don't have to worry about trying to drive the car up into the trailer risking scraping the sides.

by:

the installation was simple, had to use longer bolts, because of the factory install winch plate underneath the trailer, that was not a problem. Glad something worked as advertised.

I'm very happy with this winch so far, and also with etrailer for their customer service. The winch arrived quickly after I ordered it, but was missing the hook. I went ahead and installed it on my equipment trailer and was able to offload my son's car, but I really needed the hook to be able to handle the heavy chain needed for loading my tractor. Customer service (Rose B.) was very helpful and the missing hook arrived in less than a week.

Installation was easy, and I added two heavy angle-brackets so the winch frame is bolted to the trailer frame as well as the decking (photos attached). I used my own longer stainless bolts because of the thicker material.

by:

I bought this winch to use in my enclosed car trailer to load heavy pallets on a pallet jack. This worked perfect, as the remote allowed me to guide the pallet jack as i was winching. The install was very easy with 4 bolts and a backing plate under the trailer floor. I used a portable battery box with deep cycle battery borrowed from my trolling motor to power it as the trailer has no provision for a battery.
I am very impressed with the performance and will be installing another one on my ATV trailer.

by:

I chose this winch for an 18 ft Kwik load roll back open car hauler. Size and price met my needs. Installed it in a 30" tool box on the forward deck of the trailer under the tire rack. Perfect size to hold the winch, battery and additional straps. Using a GM F body battery tray/hold down for securing a group 75 battery. To hook to the battery side posts I did swap the connectors to larger copper eye terminals. Will be finishing it by adding a small solar panel to maintain juice. Only used this once so far. Everything worked very smoothly. Real happy with how it came out. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Easy Installation. Needed a little coaxing to free spool at first, but operates fine. Compact and a great application for my Cobra hauler.

by:

I've had the winch for a year and its been reliable. I use it to load/unload a 2500 lbs race car from a flatbed trailer. I do have it enclosed in a steel box with a battery and solar panel charger on top. The one issue I have with it is that it does not evenly spool-up the cable...it tends to spool it towards the center versus back and forth across the face of the winch. (If there is a simple fix for that, please let me know!)
Otherwise good winch for the money!

by:

First unit worked fine for a couple of months then the "power" unwind function quit. We could only unspool it in free spool mode, meaning no ability to do a controlled lowering off the trailer. Shipped back to Bulldog, they replaced the remote control and it works fine now. But cost to ship back to Bulldog (they don't cover that cost even in warranty period) was almost 1/2 the cost of an entirely new winch. I wish Bulldog would have covered the return shipping cost during warranty. Generally happy with the winch, but the shipping cost made me sick.

by:

Very Happy with the unit. Had to drag a dead tractor up the ramps onto my flatbed. The unit did the trick. I really like the wireless feature b/c I can monitor the loading anywhere around the trailer

by:

Tough construction, Haven't used yet

by:

Works great for loading my classic car into my box trailer. I like the remote control feature. It allows walking around the car to make sure it is tracking properly. Pull strength is adequate and small size takes up minimum space.

by:

Excellent customer service, very fast shipping would highly recommend this company!

by:

Easy to order online. Really fast service !!

by:

Typical Chinese product. The controller failed the first time I tried to use the winch. The cause of the failure was the paper thin female terminals on the ends of the wires. These parts were completely soft and would not stay tight on the male terminals they fit on. The only solution was to replace the female terminals with a standard quality terminal that was made of much thicker material and was hard enough that the terminal would stay on the mating part and make a consistent electrical connection. After I replaced the less than satisfactory terminals, I have had no more problems. Personally, I am outraged that The problem happened solely because the manufacturer tried to save perhaps a nickel by using toy parts instead of regular grade terminals. This is why I hate to purchase anything that was made in China. It took me a few hours to diagnosis, access the terminals, find replacements and drive to purchase them, install them and reassemble the control section of the winch to repair a problem that never, ever, should have
occurred.

by:

Couldn't ask for a better winch. Even though I don't have the remote their is plenty of cord for the control. I have it in our enclosed car hauler and it has plenty of power and the brake works great on a 4000 lb. car. It is a little of over kill but bigger is better. I would recommend this to anyone. Thank you for a great product and the service you give.

by:

the Bull dog winch arrived on time and in good condition, it was easy to get the parts put together, but the real thrill was when i tried it out, WOW what a great job it did, it has plenty of power to do what i need to do, and the price was good. hopefully i will make another order soon,

once again thankyou,

by:

Works good with fully charged battery, but if the battery is discharged some, the wireless remote control will not work, and you have to plug the wire in!

  • Electric Winch Recommendation For Pulling A 4850 Lb Boat Out Of The Water Onto A Trailer
When winching your boat onto a trailer a common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2 to 1. For example, a 5000 lb boat would require a 2500 lb winch. There are other factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes. The ratio can be stretched to 3 to 1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer. In contrast, using a boat trailer that...
