Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - Car Trailer Winch - BDW76FR

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Bulldog Winch 9,800 pound trailer winch with the synthetic rope and the Hawse fairlead. Now, this heavy-duty winch will let you put trucks, vans, tractors, and other large vehicles onto your trailer, so this is perfect for gooseneck car haulers, flatbeds, tag-a-longs and even large tilt trailers. You can see its very nice and low profile design, which will help fit easily into most custom cabinets or boxes.Over here is the motor, it's a 5.8 horsepower permanent magnet motor and that will deliver powerful, fast and safe line pulling. The motor is lighter, uses less current than a series wound motor, does have a vent on it to let vapor escape to prevent any moisture buildup.

And this winch does use an automatic mechanical brake, which will hold 100% of the load while minimizing any winch creep.Over here, they use an all-steel 3-stage planetary gear train. This will provide increased drum speed when compared with the warm drives or the one and two-stage planetary gear trains. Your ratio on this is 265 to one, does use a free spooling clutch, which will ensure a nice fast rope payout, reduce wear on the motor, has this clutch handle that'll let you engage or disengage it. And this gearbox itself can be rotated 360 degrees and installed in 12 different positions so that you could reach this clutch handle no matter where you mount the winch.Basically, right now with this handle pointing up, it's pointing this way. It is engaged, so then you can operate it.

If you want to pull out, if you want a free spool, if you rotate this 180 degrees and it's pointing down, it shows you that it's pointing to where you can pull out as much as you need. Once you pull out as much as you need and then you want to engage, just flip this handle right back up into the up position and then you can operate your winch as needed.Over here, it has this nice side-mounted power unit, which will include the contactor in this plastic housing and all your electrical wiring. You can see your battery cables come out of there. It does use a sealed 365 amp contactor, which will transmit power from your battery to the winch motor. And it is water and weather resistant to IP67 specifications.

If you notice, it does come with this wired handheld remote. This'll let you operate the winch from up to 20 feet away, has a toggle switch for in and out and a 20-foot cord. And all you have to do to connect it is just line up . There's three pins here with the notch on it. Just line those pins in the notch up.

Once you get it lined up, just push it on all the way and you're connected and now you can operate your winch. And then when you're done, you can just unhook it and then put your dust cover back. Now, the rope on this is a synthetic rope. It's 50-feet long, three-eighths inch diameter, HMPE synthetic rope. It's strong as steel yet lightweight and easier and safer to handle. They do use a steel spring tensioner, allows the easy rope management, ensures correct spooling. And if you notice on the end here, has this large three-eighths inch steel hook with the keeper on it, and even includes this red hand saver strap. Now, the fairlead right here, it's a heavy-duty CNC machine billet aluminum Hawse fairlead. And what's nice is the opening of the fairlead has rounded corners on it, which helps prevent friction to the rope. So if this is pulled at an angle, there's no sharp edges to damage the rope. Has a nice, clear end and nice finish on it to resist corrosion. You can see this winch is installed on the steel mounting plate. Comes with the hardware to install it just to let you mount the winch and the fairlead to your trailer deck reframe. This has a nice durable black powder-coated steel body and motor to resist corrosion. And the motor tube is a Dacromet plated motor tube to resist internal corrosion. The tie bars right here, side frames help create a nice strong, rigid winch body. Does come with a nice instruction manual to describe how this operates, how it all goes together. A few specs on this winch, the rate of line pull with a single layer of synthetic rope around the drum, static load is 9,800 pounds. Rolling load is 98,000 pounds. The motor we mentioned is a 12 volt DC motor. The line pull at zero pounds. The power draw will be 51 amps. The line speed is 28 or 29 feet per minute. The line pull at 9,800 pounds. The power draw would be 365 amps, the line speed is five and three-quarter feet per minute. We mentioned the battery cables right here in the back. The size on them is one gauge and the lead length on both of them is about six feet.Last thing I want to do is give you some dimensions on this. We'll give you the length. So from this end all the way over to this end, it's about 21 and a half inches long. The width on it is going to be the mounting plate with the fairlead. So from the fairlead to the back of the mounting plate is about eight inches wide. And the height at the tallest point is going to be where this handle is. It's going to be right at about eight inches tall. Weight on this winch is about 64 pounds. But again, just to spin it around and show you the back where the battery cables are and the front. But that should do it for the review on this Bulldog Winch 9,800 pound trailer winch with the synthetic rope and the Hawse fairlead.

I'm very happy with this winch so far, and also with etrailer for their customer service. The winch arrived quickly after I ordered it, but was missing the hook. I went ahead and installed it on my equipment trailer and was able to offload my son's car, but I really needed the hook to be able to handle the heavy chain needed for loading my tractor. Customer service (Rose B.) was very helpful and the missing hook arrived in less than a week.

Installation was easy, and I added two heavy angle-brackets so the winch frame is bolted to the trailer frame as well as the decking (photos attached). I used my own longer stainless bolts because of the thicker material.

Really fast delivery--thanks!

I bought this winch to use in my enclosed car trailer to load heavy pallets on a pallet jack. This worked perfect, as the remote allowed me to guide the pallet jack as i was winching. The install was very easy with 4 bolts and a backing plate under the trailer floor. I used a portable battery box with deep cycle battery borrowed from my trolling motor to power it as the trailer has no provision for a battery.
I am very impressed with the performance and will be installing another one on my ATV trailer.

I chose this winch for an 18 ft Kwik load roll back open car hauler. Size and price met my needs. Installed it in a 30" tool box on the forward deck of the trailer under the tire rack. Perfect size to hold the winch, battery and additional straps. Using a GM F body battery tray/hold down for securing a group 75 battery. To hook to the battery side posts I did swap the connectors to larger copper eye terminals. Will be finishing it by adding a small solar panel to maintain juice. Only used this once so far. Everything worked very smoothly. Real happy with how it came out. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Easy Installation. Needed a little coaxing to free spool at first, but operates fine. Compact and a great application for my Cobra hauler.

by:

Just installed yesterday. Nice appearance and very compact. Smaller foot print than the winch plate on my trailer. It was nice to have the mounting hardware and mounting plate included with the winch.

Pulled 20’ of cable out and powered it in. Motor is whisper quiet. I like the 20’ remote cable which gets me to the back end of my 20’ trailer deck easily.

by:

I've had the winch for a year and its been reliable. I use it to load/unload a 2500 lbs race car from a flatbed trailer. I do have it enclosed in a steel box with a battery and solar panel charger on top. The one issue I have with it is that it does not evenly spool-up the cable...it tends to spool it towards the center versus back and forth across the face of the winch. (If there is a simple fix for that, please let me know!)
Otherwise good winch for the money!

by:

First unit worked fine for a couple of months then the "power" unwind function quit. We could only unspool it in free spool mode, meaning no ability to do a controlled lowering off the trailer. Shipped back to Bulldog, they replaced the remote control and it works fine now. But cost to ship back to Bulldog (they don't cover that cost even in warranty period) was almost 1/2 the cost of an entirely new winch. I wish Bulldog would have covered the return shipping cost during warranty. Generally happy with the winch, but the shipping cost made me sick.

by:

Very Happy with the unit. Had to drag a dead tractor up the ramps onto my flatbed. The unit did the trick. I really like the wireless feature b/c I can monitor the loading anywhere around the trailer

by:

Tough construction, Haven't used yet

by:

My winch is mounted on a pedestal welded to the tongue of an open trailer. I power the winch with a 12v marine battery mounted in a watertight box and a small solar charger. The winch pulls a 3000-pound car onto a trailer with ease.

by:

Works great for loading my classic car into my box trailer. I like the remote control feature. It allows walking around the car to make sure it is tracking properly. Pull strength is adequate and small size takes up minimum space.

by:

Excellent customer service, very fast shipping would highly recommend this company!

by:

Easy to order online. Really fast service !!

by:

Typical Chinese product. The controller failed the first time I tried to use the winch. The cause of the failure was the paper thin female terminals on the ends of the wires. These parts were completely soft and would not stay tight on the male terminals they fit on. The only solution was to replace the female terminals with a standard quality terminal that was made of much thicker material and was hard enough that the terminal would stay on the mating part and make a consistent electrical connection. After I replaced the less than satisfactory terminals, I have had no more problems. Personally, I am outraged that The problem happened solely because the manufacturer tried to save perhaps a nickel by using toy parts instead of regular grade terminals. This is why I hate to purchase anything that was made in China. It took me a few hours to diagnosis, access the terminals, find replacements and drive to purchase them, install them and reassemble the control section of the winch to repair a problem that never, ever, should have
occurred.

by:

Couldn't ask for a better winch. Even though I don't have the remote their is plenty of cord for the control. I have it in our enclosed car hauler and it has plenty of power and the brake works great on a 4000 lb. car. It is a little of over kill but bigger is better. I would recommend this to anyone. Thank you for a great product and the service you give.

by:

the Bull dog winch arrived on time and in good condition, it was easy to get the parts put together, but the real thrill was when i tried it out, WOW what a great job it did, it has plenty of power to do what i need to do, and the price was good. hopefully i will make another order soon,

once again thankyou,

by:

Works good with fully charged battery, but if the battery is discharged some, the wireless remote control will not work, and you have to plug the wire in!

by:

Received my Bull dog winch promptly. Had to return for an issue with the cable. etrailer made the return easy and personal and sent me a new winch from the factory with in days. Great personal customer service.

by:

I haven't used it much although i am s atisficed

by:

It really did a great job pulling two trucks up on to my trailer
I would recommend this winch

by:

I used the winch so I can load and unload a 78 Trans Am which weighs about 3K, and the winch works great. The winch makes easy work of loading and unloading the car and the rope line doesn't damage the floor of the custom trailer. I highly recommend this winch. The narrow cable spool also limits the need to push the cable/rope from sided to side, which again when loading is one less thing to watch while loading the car by myself.

by:

Installed into my covered car trailer. Had a little trouble figuring out how to connect the battery cable on my 2016 Silverado, other than that, very simple to set up and operate. Now I don't have to worry about trying to drive the car up into the trailer risking scraping the sides.

by:

Yery nice winch. Was here 2 days after ordering. Very happy with my orders from Etrailer!
