Can 1,500 lb Rated Winch Pull 5,000 lb Trailer up 3 Percent Grade
Question:
I have a 2002 MC X-10 that weighs about 5000lbs loaded and I want to be able to pull it up my ~3 grade drive way in to my garage. What size winch should I use? The winch will be anchored to the garage floor and it’s a tandem trailer with 18in rims. I currently have a 1500lbs winch and I’m hoping that will be enough. Thanks!

Expert Reply:
A 1,500 rated line pull winch like you have would easily pull a 5,000 lb trailer up a 3 percent slope. At a 10 percent grade a 1,000 lb winch can actually pull 5,025 lbs so you'd be totally fine.
