Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Pretty easy install worked great and still working great a year later. Hardest part was finding a good location to mount the controller below driver side tail light but figured it out and watched a YouTube video but the mounting of the controller wasn't in the video they skipped that step. Ran the 12 volt power lead wire up to engine bay along driver side frame rail and attached to brake lines and fuel lines with zip ties.

This harness appears to be of excellent quality, and is the perfect thing needed to set up my vehicle for utility lights the right way. The only reason for four stars is that I have not actually installed it as yet, so have not had opportunity to test it.

2012 Ford Escape

Showed up timely and fit like a glove on our 2012 Ford Escape. The wiring harness was very easy and directions easy to follow. The hardware for hitch was all there and also easy to install. Thanks!

I wired my Harness in myself and a year later it's still Top Notch? Excellent product.

2008 Mazda Tribute

Worked great and still working great after a year

by:

this was one of the best companies to deal with. they kept in contact the whole time. they made sure everything arrived on time. that, to me is priceless... the hitch and harness is great. easy instalation. looks super.. I am extremely happy with the whole process.... top notch everyone....

by:

Was easy to install the directions could have been little better to work out but i watched video of it and was simple. Hardest part was running wire to battery.

by:

Awesome, helpful staff, set me up with the right wiring kit.
Working perfectly.

by:

Good product bad was the wiring for the box was short

by:

can't believe it arrived in less than a week! Best price I found online. Fit perfectly and only took 30 min to install. Happy to write a review for future customers since past reviews were what tipped my vote. Thank you etrailer!

by:

Clear well written instructions and videos. Took less than 30 mins for 16 yr old to install

It was easy to install

2012 Chevrolet Volt

The wiring harness came with everything I needed for the installation. The hardest part of the installation was running the 12 volt power wire from the rear of the car to the engine compartment. I purchased the optional weather-proof connector wit the heat shrink tubing. This ensures a good waterproof connection for the wiring. The only minor complaint that I have is that I don't like the dangling trailer electrical plug-in. It would be nicer if the plug-in could have been mounted to the bottom of the bumper.

This trailer wiring harness has functioned flawlessly and is holding up to frequent use quite well. However, I still think that the connection point for the trailer plug in should have a bracket or clip to firmly attach to the rear bumper of the vehicle.

2008 Ford Escape

Harness fit good and was easy to install. Only four stars because the video had stated the connectors were upgraded to heat shrink connectors but my connectors were not. I did have some of my own so I swapped them out.

This kit included standard butt connectors, but as referenced at about 4:10 in the video the connectors were upgraded to part # DW05745-10. A link to those upgraded heat shrink connectors can be found here.

2010 Ford Escape

This was my second trailer wiring kit for my 2010 Ford Escape. The first one stopped working correctly after about 4 years due to somehow the little module that was mounted with double sided tape behind the tail light came loose and was dangling down where it was exposed to the elements. The second unit was mounted with a screw and worked like a charm. The only minor difficulty is running the power wiring up to the battery in a manner that it is protected and out of the way. Other than that, easy fast installation in one evening. I’ve since traded that vehicle so I can only assume it’s still working.

2011 Ford Escape

Installed this on my son's 2011 Ford Escape. Using the simple to follow instructions and the Videos provided by Etrailer made this a simple project. We installed this in conjunction with a receiver hitch, which we also ordered from Etrailer.

by:

You had what I couldn't find anywhere else thank you

by:

As usual, etrailer stuff is great. This, just like my two Priuse's harnesses fit perfectly and include all the parts to finish the job and have a reliable installation.

by:

Very satisfied with the product. The package arrived a little beat up with a significant gash in the side of the box, but the hitch was undamaged and all parts were intact. The hitch installed easily, everything fit as needed, though why the need for a spaced between the hitch and the frame on the passenger side really doesn't make sense, it looks like a fix for a hitch with incorrect mounting hole locations. And that did make the installation a little more difficult, but manageable. The wiring harness also installed easily, everything needed was there and everything worked as it should. I'm quite satisfied.

by:

Harness is of good quality and plugged right in to the factory wiring. Easy to install other than having to run a wire back to the battery to power it. The separate power is nice in that the trailer light circuit is isolated from your vehicle tail lights and turn signals.

by:

Great kit that worked very well! Some of the connectors were exposed and eventually corroded. This was remedied by cutting the connectors off and soldering the connections. In hindsight, I would recommend doing this initially for any exposed connections. Other than that I have no complaints.

  • Recommended Towing Package For Towing a Utility Trailer With a 2010 Ford Edge Sport
I recommend installing the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75686 on your 2010 Ford Edge Sport. I feel this one looks better than the etrailer # e98870 you found as the Draw-Tite has a hidden cross tube which will sit behind the rear fascia. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56329 will give you a 4-way flat connector. This is the most common connector used on small single axle utility trailers. Our Ball Mount Kit # 989892 will provide you with a ball mount having a 2-3/4"...

We do offer both hard-wire and custom plug-in 4-pole wiring harnesses for the 2008 Lincoln MKX. The unit I recommend for your MKX is the custom plug-in harness from Tow Ready, part # 118551. This trailer wiring harness installs by plugging in to your MKX's tail light wiring; just one spliced connection is required, for the 12V power input wire to the converter. This connection is made from the short wire on the converter box to your battery's positive terminal, through the included fuse...

  • Why Does the Curt Powered Taillight Converter Have a Wire that Runs to the Battery
The reason the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C56329 has a power wire is to protect the delicate tail light wiring circuits of your vehicle from being overloaded. The Curt Trailer Harness # C56329 that you referenced uses your tail light circuits as signal wires and then draws the power to illuminate the tail lights of your trailer directly from your vehicle battery through the battery wire of the box. I attached installation instructions, an installation video and an FAQ on routing...

  • Could Testing Trailer Wiring Pins with Circuit Tester Cause Fuse to Blow
The only way the multimeter could have possibly blown the fuse is if one of the probes ended up touching the ground pin and one of the active pins at same time as that would create a short. Otherwise the short is on the trailer wiring which is probably the more likely situation as this is a common problem that takes out the converter boxes. So I'd recommend going over the trailer wiring looking for any cut or exposed wire and fixing as needed.

If this happens the converter did its job of protecting the vehicle. Since a new fuse as not resurrected the converter it will need to be replaced.
