How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This was a great replacement for our 4 year old Keystone Springdale trailer jack that bit the dust. Installation was easy and is much faster and quieter than our RAM jack that came with the trailer. I did sand down the paint on the contact points to make sure of a good ground then painted over what was exposed. I liked it so much I'll be looking at getting one for my large utility trailer.

Still working great after a year of use

by:

It arrived quickly and I installed it the same day. Installation was simple and straight forward. It works great. I highly recommend. I installed this jack on a Lance 1575 travel trailer. So glad I finally did this!

by:

Replaced the old worn out jack on my camper with this guy. It bolted right in and is so much quieter. My tailgate did hit this when first installed but I disassembled the cover and rotated the motor/head assembly 180degrees. This makes one LED point the wrong way but worth it to open the tailgate. Be warned though, I needed an extra set of hands to get it all back together.

by:

So far not satisfied with this jack. It was easy enough to install BUT the up down switch is reversed so up is down and down is up. The motor will make 1 lift and shut off for 10 sec. or so. defantley not worth this kind of money

It does sound like this jack may need replacing. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you to assist.

by:

Shipping was exceptionally fast, the jack works great, although I can for see the rubber on the toggle switches will probably either wear quickly or possibly the weather/sun will deteriorate sooner than later.

by:

we ordered the jack .It shipped quickly. easy installation no problems works great.

by:

Works excellent! Highly recommended!

by:

Great product, should include wiring in structions.

by:

The Strindberg jack works like a charm. I especially like that it automatically shuts off before it runs out of jack room on the shaft, both up or down. Really great product.

by:

The jack is great. Works perfectly.
Not
too happy with whatever delivery service was used. Left this leaning against my mailbox at the edge of the street…
But it came quickly and wasn’t stolen.

by:

Jack installation was quick and easy. I have bought a lot of trailer equipment from Etrailer and they have been very good company to deal with.

by:

Nice unit, dropped right in. Goes up and down. Haven’t used it yet under load, but sure makes it easier to connect and disconnect the trailer.

by:

This jack did not work right out of the box. It would retract but would not extend. Not only that, but when I tried to use the manual jack handle the unit would not work either. I had to use a bottle jack to get the trailer off my truck. etrailer was extremely helpful and helped me choose a different unit. They promptly sent to me the return shipping label for this defective unit.

by:

Thank you etrailer people for your fine service. I can not really rate this jack until I use it for at least a few months. But I can say that this electric jack works great just out of the box and it came with all the proper hardware for a good installation.

Well a year later and all is well. We treat our jacks well and completely cover them in a plastic bag.The switches can be operated with the bag on.

by:

Great jack for the money!

by:

The new SC jack shipped quickly. Easy to install on my 20 ft. power tilt car carrier because I was only replacing a cheap electric jack from [online vendor] that had just failed rather than a new install.
I did have to turn the star washers over because the pointy side has to scratch through the paint to make a good ground contact but everything else was easy-peasy. You can tell that this new jack is a much more quality product. Works great/ much quieter than the old power jack. Thanks etrailer!!

by:

Very easy to install. Much more sturdier then the previous one.

by:

Installed easily with the parts provided. Works smoothly and quietly.

by:

The jack is in a slow failure mode. There seems to be some resistance in the jack as it keeps getting slower and slower at one year old. I’m waiting for the day it completely stops working. Voltage and ground are normal.

I have gotten in contact with the manufacturer. We are needing some more information in order to assist you better. Do you have a 30 Amp Fuse attached correctly? Make sure it is not loose or anything. Also please check to make sure that you have at least 12 volts coming to the jack. If it is less then 6, you will need to recharge the battery or change it. Also please look at all the wires inside the head of the jack to make sure nothing has come loose. One thing it could be, is if the jack was not hooked up as the instructions state, then it could be an issue with something in the RV. This is not a normal thing to happen with a jack that is one year old.

by:

I just installed the jack and haven't had chance to use it yet
I will know more next week when i return from camping to let you know how it performs
As far as delivery I am well satisfied with the amount of time in which I received it
Thank You

by:

This 2nd elec Jack I’ve purchased & very happy with them

by:

Sent an open package we should have refused!! It turned out to be defective. Took my time to install for nothing!!! Thank God Stromberg is sending a replacement. Leaves a bad tast to ever order from etrailer again. They dumped a unit on us that should have been tested first!

by:

Very nice unit so far and simple installation. Since this is on an enclosed utility trailer that I work from on site, I am disappointed that I cannot completely open the tailgate as it rests on the jack's motor housing. I thought about rotating the jack but would have to drill new mounting holes and am not sure if the performance of the jack would be compromised as a result.

Etrailer Expert

3/24/2022

You mentioned that you wanted to rotate the jack and would need to drill new mounting holes. As long as you are drilling new holes into the trailer frame and not the jack there should not be any reason that the jack would not work for you.

by:

etrailer helped me with no questions asked when a product came damaged by UPS. Got me a replacement before I could even box up the broken one to ship back.

by:

Came fast and installed it, it works up and down so got to see how long it last. Was easy to install and hooke would recommend if it for better than a hand crank

  • Electric Trailer Jack Extends Fine But Does not Easily Retract
If it runs when you push the retract switch then it likely is not the switch though it would not hurt to clean the contacts on the inside. It sounds like the jack has been over extended at some point which can damage the threads on the nut and/or screw on the inside. Try raising the jack about half way and then retracting it. If it works fine then that is probably the issue. If the jack continues to have problems then there may be a problem with the motor/gears. Either way, damaged threads,...

  • Trailer Jack Recommendation that Doesnt Break When Over Retracted or Extended
The circuit breaker of the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944017 is designed to prevent the motor from drawing too much amperage and damaging itself. If you were to lower the jack all the way and then keep holding the button you eventually would trip the breaker, but more importantly you would potentially damage the threads of the internal screw of the jack which would permanently break it. I would not advise you rely on the breaker to or the threads bottoming out to let you know...

  • A-Frame Electric Power Jack Recommendation For Trailer
We've got several electric A-Frame jacks that would work perfectly for you. If your trailer weighs just shy of 10,000 lbs, the trailer's tongue weight is likely somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000-1500 lbs, so you'll want a jack with a capacity greater than that. The greater the capacity of the jack, the less hard it'll have to work and therefore the longer it will last. Because of this, I'd recommend going with the highest capacity jack your budget will allow. My go-to recommendation...
